The one thing every English guide to Kagoshima gets wrong in 2026 is the sentence “the Sakurajima ferry runs 24 hours a day”. It did. It does not. Kagoshima City, which owns and runs the ferry, states that from midnight on October 1, 2025 it stopped the sailings between 0:00 and the 3 o’clock hour. First boat from the island is now 4:00, last boat back to the city departs the island at 23:00, and both terminals lock up after the final crossing.
That ferry is also the spine of the map. Kagoshima is a city built along a bay with a volcano four kilometers across the water, and almost everything you will do sits on one of three lines: the tram between Kagoshima-Chuo Station and the ferry port, the 15-minute crossing to Sakurajima, and the loop buses on either side. Here is where things are, in the city’s own numbers.
Kagoshima at a glance

The Kagoshima map in four zones
Zone 1: Kagoshima-Chuo Station and the west
The Shinkansen terminal and the airport bus stop. The Kyushu Shinkansen arrives here from Hakata in about an hour and a quarter, per the tourist site. The tram stop is a signposted walk from the east exit, and the City View bus and the airport limousine both leave from the station front. Most hotels aimed at rail travelers cluster here.
Zone 2: Tenmonkan and the tram spine
The shopping and eating district sits between the station and the waterfront, on the tram line. The official site describes it as the dining and shopping district and a City View stop. If you want black pork shabu-shabu or the shaved-ice dessert the city calls shirokuma, this is the zone the tourist site points you to, though we are not naming restaurants.
Zone 3: The waterfront, the aquarium and the ferry
Tram Route 2 ends the useful part of its run at Suizokukan-guchi, the aquarium entrance stop; the ferry terminal is an eight-minute walk beyond it. The Io World aquarium and the Sakurajima ferry share this corner, which is why the bus stop is called Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae. Go up to the second floor of the terminal for boarding.
Zone 4: Sakurajima
Across the water. The ferry docks at Sakurajima Port, where the Island View loop bus leaves every 30 minutes from 9:30 to 16:30 for the observatories, and where one of the longest footbaths in Japan sits at the foot of the volcano, per the tourist site. You pay the ferry fare here, not in the city.
The Sakurajima ferry: hours, fares and the October 2025 change
| From Sakurajima Port | From Kagoshima Port | |
|---|---|---|
| First boat | 4:00 | 4:30 |
| Last boat | 23:00 | 23:30 |
| Terminal opens | About 15 minutes before first boat | About 30 minutes before first boat |
What does it cost?
250 yen for adults, 130 yen for children from age one through elementary school, from the fare page updated October 30, 2025. One preschooler per accompanying adult is free. Groups of 15 or more get 10 percent off. The fares were revised in July 2024, which is why older ticket books are being settled with difference coupons; if a guide quotes a lower adult fare, it predates that revision.
Can I take a car?
Yes; the fare is by vehicle length and includes the driver. Under 3 meters, 1,280 yen; 3 to 4 meters, 1,700 yen; 4 to 5 meters, 2,350 yen; 5 to 6 meters, 2,630 yen. Check the length on the vehicle registration, which is what the city tells you to do.
Do I need a ticket in advance?
No. Fares are paid on the Sakurajima side, so from the city you simply board. The city lists 94 sailings on weekdays and 104 on weekends and holidays, and the crossing is about 15 minutes, up to about 20 in rough water. The Rapica IC card, credit cards and e-money are accepted per the fare page’s headings. A SUNQ Pass covers the ferry outright.
Where do I check whether it is running?
The ferry office now says its operating status is posted on its official social media rather than kept live on the website, and the same site carries links to weather and ashfall information. On a day of heavy ash or strong wind, look there before you walk to the port.
Getting from Kagoshima-Chuo Station to the ferry
| Mode | Route | Time | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tram | Route 2 (N), bound for Kagoshima-Ekimae; board at Kagoshima-Chuo-Ekimae, alight Suizokukan-guchi (N03) | About 23 min (15 on the tram + 8 on foot) | About every 7 min |
| City bus | No. 16, 16-2 or 24 from East 5/6 to Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae | About 15 min | 16: every 30–60 min; 16-2: hourly; 24: every 60–90 min |
| City View loop bus | Stop 16, Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae | About 65 min | Sightseeing loop, not a shortcut |
Which one should I take?
The tram, unless a bus is at the stop when you walk out. It is the most frequent, and the eight-minute walk at the far end is flat and signed. The tourist site warns that bus 16-3 does not go to the aquarium stop, so read the number. The City View bus only makes sense if you want the sights on the way and have the day pass.
How do I find the tram stop from the Shinkansen gates?
The official site walks it in ten steps: from the gates, take the passage to the right of the souvenir arcade, follow signs to the East Exit, down the escalator, past the information board, along the underground passage, right at the police box, and the Kagoshima-Chuo-Ekimae stop is in front on the left. Wait at the nearer of the two boarding areas.
Passes: CUTE versus the City View day pass
| CUTE (digital) | City View one-day pass | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | City buses, tram, City View bus, Sakurajima Island View bus and the ferry | City View bus, tram and city buses; not the ferry |
| Price | 1,400 yen adult / 700 child for one day; 2,100 / 1,050 for two | 700 yen adult / 350 child |
| Where to buy | myroute app (Kyushu MaaS) or the Kagoshima Wakuwaku app; also at counters | On the bus, tram or city buses, at hotels and tourist information counters |
| Extras | Discount passport for city attractions | Discount voucher for more than ten attractions including the Meiji Restoration museum, Sengan-en and the aquarium |
| Refunds | None after purchase; needs internet; has an expiry | — |
When does CUTE pay off?
The moment your day includes the ferry both ways and the Island View bus. Two crossings alone are 500 yen; add the loop bus and a tram ride each way and you are past 1,400 yen. The city’s own page says it is recommended for Sakurajima sightseeing, which is the honest use case.
When is the 700 yen pass enough?
When you are staying on the city side: the tourist site’s rule of thumb is that if you visit more than three City View stops in a day, the pass beats paying 230 yen per ride. It also unlocks the tram and city buses.
How do I show a digital ticket?
Display the active ticket and show it to the driver when you get off; on the ferry, show it to the staff on the Sakurajima side, which is where fares are collected. You need a data connection to display it.
The city side: what the loop bus is for
The Kagoshima City View is an 80-minute loop that strings the sights together: the Museum of the Meiji Restoration, the Saigo Takamori statue and the city art museum, the Shiroyama observatory with its view over the bay to the volcano, Tenmonkan, the aquarium and ferry corner, and out along the coast to Sengan-en, the former Shimadzu lords’ garden, which its own site lists as open 9:00 to 17:00 with no closing days.
Is Shiroyama worth the climb?
It is the classic view of Sakurajima across the water and, per the tourist site, the site of the last battle of the samurai era. The bus stops there, so it is not a climb unless you choose to walk. Go on a clear morning; ash and haze flatten the view by afternoon more often than not.
What is the rest of Kyushu from here?
Kagoshima is the southern terminus of the Shinkansen, so the rest of the island is a straight line north: Kumamoto and then Fukuoka. Nagasaki and Beppu sit off that line to the west and east. And from Kagoshima’s other port there is the long overnight ferry to Okinawa, which is a different boat from a different pier and is not what this page is about.
Arriving: the airport is not in the city
Kagoshima Airport sits well inland. The official route is the airport limousine bus from the Kagoshima-Chuo Terminal Building: about 40 minutes, roughly every 20 minutes, 1,500 yen adult and 750 yen child, run by Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu, no reservation. You can pay in cash, with the Rapica IC card, or with a contactless Visa, JCB, Mastercard, AMEX, Diners or Discover card.
How long from Tokyo or Osaka?
The tourist site quotes about 1 hour 50 minutes from Haneda and 1 hour 15 minutes from Osaka Itami by air, then at least 38 minutes from the airport to the station by shuttle. From Hakata by Shinkansen, about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Where is the bus stop at the station?
Inside the Kagoshima-Chuo Terminal Building across from the east exit; the official site walks you there both through the underground passage and at street level, and tells you to buy the ticket at the terminal before boarding.

Bottom line (2026). The Sakurajima ferry is not 24 hours anymore: since October 1, 2025 the last boat off the island is 23:00 and the first is 4:00. It costs 250 yen, takes 15 minutes, and you pay on the island side. Reach it from Kagoshima-Chuo by tram Route 2 to Suizokukan-guchi in about 23 minutes. If the volcano is the point of the day, buy CUTE for 1,400 yen in the myroute app; if you are staying on the city side, the 700 yen City View day pass is enough.
