HOSHINOYA Kyoto is a 25-room inn on the Oi River in Arashiyama, reached by its own boat. Before you book, know five rules: no one under 12 can stay, babies included; there is a two-night minimum unless you book within 60 days; every discounted plan is non-refundable from the moment you book; the last boat leaves at 5:45 p.m.; and there is no onsen, no parking and no shuttle.
For how the Hoshino Resorts brands differ, see our Hoshino Resorts guide, and for its sister inn under Mt. Fuji, our HOSHINOYA Fuji guide.

Can children stay at HOSHINOYA Kyoto?

Why is there a minimum age of 12?
No guest under 12 can stay, and the Japanese text adds that this includes babies and toddlers. The reason the hotel gives is the building: the main wing is 100-year-old wooden architecture, and footsteps and voices carry to the other rooms. Guests aged 12 and over are booked as adults, so there is no child rate, no bed sharing and no extra bed. This is HOSHINOYA Kyoto’s own rule; the other HOSHINOYA inns take children.
Can teenagers stay without their parents?
Only with paperwork. The Hoshino Resorts FAQ says guests under 18 staying without an adult must hand in a parental consent form at check-in, with a contact for the parents; without it, they cannot stay. Two evening activities, the incense bar and the moon viewing, are for guests aged 20 and over. Our under-18 hotel stays guide compares other chains.
Booking HOSHINOYA Kyoto: minimum nights, plans and cancellation

Can I book just one night?
Only within 60 days of the stay. Before that, the hotel takes bookings of two nights or more. HOSHINOYA bookings open up to a year and a half ahead. You cannot choose a specific room, and you cannot change the number of guests once the booking is confirmed, so book the right party size from the start. Our how many days in Kyoto guide helps if two nights changes your plan.
Which plans can I cancel?
In the sample search we read, only the standard rate could be canceled for a partial fee: 10 percent from 21 to 4 days before and 100 percent from 3 days before. Every discounted plan, including the early-bird plans, the two-night plan and the plans with dinner and breakfast, charges 100 percent from the moment you book and cannot be changed.
Hoshino Resorts waives cancellation fees in some cases, for example when the Japan Meteorological Agency issues a special warning for the area on your check-in or check-out date. Refunds take one to three months. Our hotel cancellation guide compares other hotels.
How do I pay, and in which currency?
Booking on the official site takes the full amount by card: American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Mastercard or Visa. The English booking screen shows US dollars by default, but the charge is in yen. At the hotel, you can pay extras in cash or by card, including UnionPay.
What about taxes and tips?
Consumption tax of 10 percent applies to the room and service charges. Kyoto’s accommodation tax is paid at the hotel, and the hotel warns that the rate can change; it does not print the amount. On tips, the pages disagree: some English plan text says “TIP INCLUDED,” while the Japanese plan text and the Hoshino Resorts FAQ say tips are not accepted. Either way, do not tip.
Getting to HOSHINOYA Kyoto by boat

How does the boat work?
You check in at the hotel’s boat lounge in Arashiyama, at 60 Arashiyama Nakaoshitacho, and ride the hotel’s private boat upriver to the guest wing. The boat must be reserved in advance; the hotel sends the details by email after you book, or through its chatbot. Boats to the guest wing run from 2:30 p.m., and the last leaves at 5:45 p.m. The hotel does not publish the fare or the journey time.
What if the river is too high?
Then the boat does not run, and the hotel drives each party in its own car. The Japanese page adds that boats can also be delayed, and the room notes warn that the car can make pickup and drop-off times later.
What if I arrive late?
Plan to be at the boat lounge well before 5:45 p.m. The hotel does not say what happens after the last boat. The Hoshino Resorts terms say that a guest who has not arrived by 6 p.m. without calling, or by midnight on a stay without dinner, may be treated as having canceled. Our late arrival guide compares other hotels.
How do I get to the boat lounge?
By train, take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama, then walk 15 minutes or take a 5-minute taxi. From Hankyu Arashiyama Station, it is a 6-minute walk or a 2-minute taxi. The hotel has no shuttle and no parking; drivers use car parks around Arashiyama.
What about my luggage?
If you ship bags, send them to arrive at the front desk the day before check-in, with the check-in date and the lead guest’s name on the slip. The Japanese access page says guests arriving by car with large bags can leave them at the boat lounge in advance; the English page does not mention this. The hotel does not say how much luggage the boat takes.
Rooms and baths at HOSHINOYA Kyoto
Is there an onsen or a pool?
No. The hotel lists no onsen, public bath or pool. Every room has its own bathtub, with a separate toilet. Because there is no shared bath, the hotel publishes no tattoo rule for this inn.
Which rooms fit three people?
Only two types: the Yamanoha Tatami and the Tsukihashi Maisonette. The other seven types sleep one or two. No room takes an extra bed.

Official booking site room data, read October 6, 2026.
Is the room cleaned every day?
Not fully. On stays of several nights, the hotel does a full clean once every three days; on other days it changes towels and takes the trash but not the sheets. An extra clean costs 9,680 yen. There is no guest laundry. Wi-Fi is free, and all rooms are non-smoking, including e-cigarettes. Pets are not allowed.
Dinner and breakfast at HOSHINOYA Kyoto

Is dinner included?
Not on the standard rate, which the English page calls room only. Plans with dinner and breakfast exist, and the two-night version serves beef shabu-shabu on the first night and the kaiseki course on the second.
What does dinner cost?
| Meal | Where / when | Price per person | Book by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaiseki course | Dining room, from 5:30 p.m. | 24,200 yen | After booking |
| Beef or yuba shabu-shabu | Your room, 6:00 or 7:15 p.m. | 24,200 yen | 8 p.m. the day before |
| A la carte | Dining room, 5:30 to 10 p.m. | Not listed | Same day only |
| Japanese breakfast | Your room, 7:30 to 9:45 a.m. | 4,598 yen | The day before |
Official dining page (Japanese prices include tax and a 10% service charge), read October 6, 2026. Canceling a meal on the day costs 100%.
Can the kitchen handle allergies or a vegetarian diet?
Tell the hotel at least 5 days before. Hoshino Resorts says it will try to remove allergens but cannot guarantee it, and the a la carte menu cannot be adjusted at all. The English page calls the yuba shabu-shabu “vegetarian-friendly”; the Japanese page does not. You may bring your own wine for 3,000 yen a bottle, and the hotel asks diners at the kaiseki course not to wear strong perfume.
What is there to do at HOSHINOYA Kyoto?

Some activities are free, such as a morning stretch by the river, 8:30 to 9 a.m., which you book the day before. Others cost extra and are booked through the booking confirmation page: a ride on the hotel’s roofed boat “Hisui” is 51,000 yen per party including tax and service, and in-room shiatsu is listed at 14,520 yen for 60 minutes, not offered on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Canceling most paid activities late costs the full price.
Which free events run this autumn?

| Evening Stillness Session | All year | 10 to 10:05 p.m. | By 6 p.m. that day |

Official activities page, read October 6, 2026. All free for staying guests.
If you are choosing dates for the autumn leaves, the free aperitif and color events run through early December, and the moon viewing ends on October 31. Paid programs, such as the kimono walk around Kyoto, are priced separately from the room.
How far ahead should I book?
HOSHINOYA rooms open up to a year and a half ahead. With only 25 rooms and a two-night minimum, popular dates fill early; if you can only spare one night, watch for openings inside the 60-day window. The hotel is closed for maintenance from January 12 to 19, 2027.
Who HOSHINOYA Kyoto suits
Couples and adult friends who can commit to two nights, want a quiet inn reached by boat, and will arrive in the afternoon. It does not suit families with children under 12, travelers whose plans may change on a discounted rate, anyone hoping for an onsen or pool, or drivers who want to park at the door.
A simple order of booking helps: pick the plan first (standard rate if dates may change), book the boat as soon as the confirmation email arrives, order in-room shabu-shabu or breakfast by the deadlines, ship any large bags to arrive the day before, and aim for the boat lounge by mid-afternoon. Contact numbers are on the official contact page; the English and Japanese pages list slightly different reservation numbers, so use the one for your language.
