    The rate is set by the room-only price per person per night, without meals and consumption tax. Check the official page linked below for exceptions.

    Rates in the main places (per person per night)

    The price is the room-only price with service charge, without meals and consumption tax, divided by the guests in the room. Where both a prefecture and a city charge, the amounts above are the total.

    What's changing

    • Niseko: 3% of the room price from November 1, 2026 (until October 31, a fixed amount).
    • Okinawa: 2% per person per night, up to ¥2,000, from February 1, 2027, including Ishigaki and Miyakojima.
    • Tokyo: 3% per person per night from April 1, 2027; stays under ¥13,000 per person are not taxed, and hostels (simple lodging) and vacation rentals are added.
    • Nagasaki City: new rates from April 1, 2027. Fujiyoshida, Fujikawaguchiko and Kagoshima City start a ¥200 tax on April 1, 2027.
    • Hakone aims to start a tax in April 2028. Nara, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe and Kamakura had none as of October 2026.

    How much is the accommodation tax in Tokyo?

    Nothing under ¥10,000 per person per night, ¥100 from ¥10,000 and ¥200 from ¥15,000, counting the room-only price without consumption tax. From April 1, 2027 it becomes 3% for stays of ¥13,000 or more per person.

    How much is the accommodation tax in Kyoto?

    From March 1, 2026: ¥200 under ¥6,000, ¥400 under ¥20,000, ¥1,000 under ¥50,000, ¥4,000 under ¥100,000 and ¥10,000 at ¥100,000 or more, per person per night.

    Do children pay accommodation tax in Japan?

    In most places, yes, if they pay for the stay. A few places exempt young children, such as Gifu City, Takayama and Atami. School trips are exempt in many places.

    Is the tax based on the price with or without consumption tax?

    Without. Most official pages say the price is the room-only price with service charge, without meals and consumption tax.

    Is there an accommodation tax in Osaka?

    Yes, across Osaka Prefecture: nothing under ¥5,000, then ¥200, ¥400 or ¥500 per person per night. Osaka City has no separate tax of its own.
