Two: the ticket booths at the parks are closed, officially — walk up without a ticket and you're standing outside a sold-out gate with nowhere to buy one.

No senior discount exists, and no general-sale multi-day ticket — single days only. The evening passes are the honest budget play: ¥5,100 flat after 17:00 in summer buys you fireworks, night parades and shorter lines for half the gate price.
The closed-booth rule: buy before you go, full stop
Sales open daily at 14:00 Japan time for the same date two months ahead (dates that don't exist two months out open on the 1st at 14:00). School-holiday and event dates genuinely sell out — and since you can't change onto a sold-out date later, peak-date travelers should buy at release. Convert 14:00 JST to your time zone and set the alarm; it's the Pokémon Café drill all over again.
What you can change — and the three things you can't
Official-site purchases can be changed online, free of charge, in exactly two dimensions: the date (if the new date isn't sold out) and the age category. Locked forever: the ticket type, the park — buy DisneySea when your group wanted Disneyland and no amount of pleading swaps it — and refunds for personal reasons don't exist. The change system works by full re-charge and refund, so expect card statements to show both.
The hotel loophole for sold-out dates
One official escape hatch: Disney hotel guests can buy one-day passports at their hotel for every day of their stay — even when online sales show sold out. One ticket per person per day, no park-hopping on the same day.
