Before anything else: Ghibli Park is not the Ghibli Museum. The park is in Aichi, near Nagoya. The museum is in Mitaka, Tokyo. They are different places, and the official site opens its ticket page by telling you the tickets are not interchangeable — which tells you how often people get this wrong.
With that out of the way, the ticket itself runs on one rule that decides everything: tickets go on sale two months ahead, on the 10th of the month, at 2 p.m. Japan time. And you cannot buy them at the park — not at any entrance, not on the day.
So this is a diary problem before it is a money problem. Here is the official 2026 pricing, which pass actually gets you Satsuki and Mei's House, and the timing rules that catch people.

A Japanese visitor who had already done the Grand Warehouse, then went back once Valley of Witches opened to do all five areas properly. She singles out the inside of Howl’s castle — "recreated down to the details." This is the Premium pass, and this is what the extra ¥4,000 is for.
The 10th-of-the-month rule
This is the whole game. Tickets go on sale two months in advance, on the 10th, at 2 p.m. Japan time. September dates went live on 10 July at 14:00 JST. October dates on 10 August. And so on.
Two consequences, and both bite visitors from abroad specifically:
- If your date isn't listed, it isn't sold out — it isn't released. People planning six months out see nothing and assume the worst. Nothing is wrong. Come back on the 10th.
- 2 p.m. Japan time is not 2 p.m. where you live. That's 1 a.m. in New York, 6 a.m. in London, 3 p.m. in Sydney. Work it out before the day, not on it.

Standard or Premium? This is the ¥4,000 question
There are two day passes and the gap between them is more than double. What you are buying is areas.
| Standard ¥3,300 weekday ¥3,800 weekend | 3 areas: Ghibli's Grand Warehouse · Mononoke Village · Valley of Witches The big indoor Ghibli experience, the witch films' buildings, and the Tatara-ba structures. |
|---|---|
| Premium ¥7,300 weekday ¥7,800 weekend | All 5 areas — adds Hill of Youth (World Emporium) and Dondoko Forest (Satsuki and Mei's House) Plus interiors: Okino Residence, Howl's Castle, The House of Witches. |
One more line worth reading in the official small print: a service charge is applied on top of admission when the tickets are issued. The numbers above are the admission, not the total.
The timing rules inside the park
Once you're in, the park is mostly relaxed — with one exception that is not.
- Ghibli's Grand Warehouse has an assigned entry time — you pick a slot when you buy (9 a.m., 10, 11, 12, 1 p.m., 2 p.m.). You must enter within one hour of your slot, and early entry is not allowed.
- The other four areas have no assigned time — but final entry to all of them is 16:30, and the park closes at 17:00.
- Re-entry is allowed to each area — except the Grand Warehouse, where re-entry only works after 3:00 p.m.
- Wristband pickup must be done by 12:00 p.m. on the day. Not a detail to discover at 13:00.
The official site also flags the crowd pattern honestly: Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest get very busy from 16:00 until closing. If you hold a Premium pass, do those earlier — they are the two areas you paid the extra ¥4,000 for.
Kiki’s broom on the Merry-Go-Round in Valley of Witches — the one seat everybody wants. She queued at the front of the line to get it. Worth knowing that inside the park, the queueing isn’t over just because you got a ticket.
Getting there — it’s Aichi, not Tokyo
Ghibli Park sits inside the Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park, out near Nagoya. This is a day trip from Nagoya, or a deliberate stop on a Tokyo–Kyoto run — it is not an afternoon out of Shinjuku.
Getting there by rail from Tokyo or Osaka? Whether the pass pays off is a real question — see our JR Pass guide, which is honest about when it doesn't.
Tips for foreign visitors
- Set an alarm for the 10th, at 14:00 JST, two months before your date. Convert the time zone in advance.
- Don't plan to buy at the park. There is nowhere to buy at the park.
- Totoro fans: Premium. Satsuki and Mei's House isn't in the Standard pass.
- Budget the service charge on top of the listed price.
- Don't confuse it with the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka — different city, different ticket, not interchangeable.
- Do Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest before 16:00 if you have Premium — the official site says they jam up at the end of the day.
The Grand Warehouse — the "step into the scene" exhibit, here as Pazu on Dola’s back. This area is covered by the Standard pass, and it’s the one with the assigned entry time.
Read the first line of her caption: "photographable areas only." Not everything inside is open to cameras — worth adjusting your expectations before you go in.
