Machiyado Ichiryu Takayama · Private Baths, Hida Beef
Guide·October 23, 2026·12 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Machiyado Ichiryu is an 11-room inn in central Takayama, Gifu, about 7 minutes on foot from Takayama Station. It began more than 50 years ago as a ryokan specializing in Hida beef, and reopened under its new name on November 2, 2024, after a year-long renovation. Its English site puts the idea simply: “Stay not as a tourist, but as if you live here.” Before you book, three things matter: there is no large public bath, only in-room and private baths; young children cannot stay; and the room rate carries a 10 percent service charge plus local taxes.

We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: plan prices (the booking system did not load for us), the tattoo rule, pick-up service, how many guests each room type holds, and vegetarian options, none of which the official pages give; and meal times and travel times where the official pages list different figures.

Rooms and baths at Machiyado Ichiryu

What are the rooms like?

All 11 rooms are Japanese-modern in style and at least 40 square meters, and six are suites. The larger types are listed with their sizes:

Room typeSize
Premium Suite “Tenryo”100 m²
Suites “Yoroku” and “Amo”80 m²
Luxury Suite “Jinya”75 m²
Junior Suites “Sukuna” and “Enku”60 m²
Executive, Standard, Standard TwinNot stated (all rooms 40 m²+)

Rooms have a TV, minibar, fridge, kettle, air purifier, a portable JBL Bluetooth speaker, a safe, hair dryer, phone charger and ReFa products, and there is Wi-Fi. The official pages do not say how many guests each type sleeps, so check the plan on the booking page.

Is there a public bath, or only private ones?

Only private ones. The inn states plainly that it has no large public bath. Every room has its own semi-open-air bath, but the hot-spring page notes that the in-room baths are not hot-spring water. For the spring itself, the inn names Hida Takayama Onsen, a simple hot spring described as weakly alkaline and low in temperature.

How do the three private baths work?

Miyagawa is the reservable one: 4,400 yen for 45 minutes, starting on the hour, booked in advance or at the front desk on the day. The tub is about 2.2 by 1.8 meters. The other two can be used whenever they are empty, and you can check which are free from your room. All three are open 15:00–24:00 and 6:00–10:00. Our guide to private bath fees in Japan explains how these reservable baths compare.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos. Since the inn has only in-room and private baths, ask the inn directly if it matters to you.

Where and what is dinner?

Dinner is a kaiseki course served in private rooms in a separate building called 168 Tei (Iroha Tei), with new rooms and rooms in a renovated old house. There are five courses to choose from: the basic kaiseki, plus four upgrades centered on Hida beef.

Dinner upgradeAdded to the basic kaiseki
Selected Hida beef, choice kaiseki+3,300 yen
Selected Hida beef, choice kaiseki Premium+6,600 yen
Hida beef full kaiseki “Gokusen”+8,800 yen
Special kaiseki “Kiwami”+16,500 yen

From the official cuisine page, read October 14, 2026.

Breakfast comes in a lacquered jubako box, with small dishes laid out in compartments. The official pages list more than one set of meal times, so confirm your dinner and breakfast times with the inn.

Can the kitchen handle allergies or a special diet?

Tell the inn about food allergies before you arrive. The Japanese cuisine page says it cannot fully remove soy, wheat, egg, dairy, seafood or alcohol from seasonings, stock and ingredients, cannot prepare halal meals, and cannot fully prevent cross-contamination. Guests with severe allergies may be turned down for plans with meals, so ask the inn what it can offer. The pages do not mention vegetarian meals.

Prices and rules at Machiyado Ichiryu

How much does a stay cost?

The official site says rates depend on the plan in its booking system, which did not load for us, so we do not quote a nightly price. The accommodation terms set out how the bill is built: a basic rate covering the room, dinner and breakfast, plus a 10 percent service charge, plus consumption tax. On top, Takayama charges a bathing tax of 150 yen and an accommodation tax of 100, 200 or 300 yen per person per night depending on the rate, paid at the inn; see our onsen bathing tax guide. The official site advertises a rate guarantee for booking direct.

Can children stay?

According to the Japanese pages, children of elementary-school age and younger are not accepted, so the inn can offer adults a quiet time and space. The English page words the age rule differently, so if you are traveling with a child, confirm with the inn before you book.

What is the cancellation policy?

The standard policy is 20 percent from 10 days before, 30 percent from 3 days before, 80 percent the day before and on the day, and 100 percent for a no-show without contact. If a plan shows its own policy, that one takes priority. There are no refunds after the stay. See our hotel cancellation guide.

How do I pay?

Either prepay when you book, by credit card or PayPal, or pay at checkout by cash or card. The cards listed are JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club.

On foot, the old town and the Miyagawa morning market are about 3 minutes away, Takayama Jinya about 5 minutes, the Kusakabe Folk Museum about 9 minutes, and the festival floats exhibition hall about 15 minutes. The inn also rents LUUP electric scooters for 200 yen per 20 minutes. Our Takayama map shows how these sights sit around the station.
