Shibu Onsen Kokuya stands in the middle of Shibu Onsen, a hot-spring town in Yamanouchi, Nagano. The inn marks its 400th anniversary, traces its founding to the early Edo period, and each owner has taken the name Ichizaemon. It calls itself an inn of nine baths fed by its own springs, and says it has hosted guests from 32 countries. Before you book, three things matter: there is no elevator and many stairs; all meals are served in a dining room, not in your room; and the official pages describe the bath system differently, so confirm it with the inn.

Getting to Shibu Onsen Kokuya in Shibu Onsen

How do I get there by train?
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (about 1 hour 30 minutes), then the Nagano Electric Railway to Yudanaka Station. The inn offers pickup at Yudanaka for arrivals from 15:00; tell it your arrival time in advance. The Snow Monkey Park is in the same area, and the inn’s English site features it.
What if I drive?
The streets of the onsen town are one-way, uphill only, from 7:00 to 21:00. The inn’s parking, for 20 cars, is a separate lot about a 10-minute walk away. From 15:00, staff move your car from the entrance to the lot.
The baths at Shibu Onsen Kokuya

What baths does the inn have?
The spa page lists nine baths using six sources the inn owns. At Fukuroku-no-yu, each source flows into its own cypress tub, so you can compare them side by side. Issa-no-yu, the largest, has a mist sauna; Kasei-no-yu is an open-air bath on the 2nd floor, and Seisen, the smallest open-air bath, works as a footbath too. One source, Netsu-no-yu, runs at about 90 degrees, and the inn asks you to add water. A viewing window by the Chouseian dining room shows a spring under the floor. Soap, body wash, shampoo and other amenities are provided.
Are the baths private or shared?
The official pages describe this in different ways, so ask the inn when you book how the baths are shared on your dates and whether you need to reserve a time. Separately, a paid private open-air bath costs 1,100 yen per hour, tax included.
Can I bathe with a tattoo?
The official pages do not state a tattoo policy. Ask the inn before you book. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.
Can I visit the public baths of Shibu Onsen?
The inn points guests to the town’s nine public baths for a bath crawl. Guests who book on the official site or by phone get a free hand towel for the crawl.
Rooms at Shibu Onsen Kokuya
Rooms are Japanese style. Some have a private open-air bath with tubs of sawara cypress, hinoki, Towada stone or Amakusa stone; standard rooms of 8 to 14 mats have no open-air bath, and all have a bidet toilet. You can ask for a room, but the inn cannot promise one. All rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking area. The suite Kuon, opened in April 2023, is 140 square meters with its garden, has an indoor rock bath, an open-air hinoki bath and a sauna, serves meals in the suite and takes one group a day. The inn’s own “sorry” list notes no elevator, many stairs, a layout that can be confusing, and no view, as it stands between other inns. The building dates mainly from 1957.
Meals at Shibu Onsen Kokuya
What are dinner and breakfast like?
Dinner is a creative kaiseki of Shinshu ingredients chosen by the head chef, with Koshihikari rice from Nakano. Handmade soba is not part of the standard plan. Breakfast is Japanese or Western; the booking page gives two different times to choose, so tell the inn early if you want Western.
Where are meals served?
Every guest eats in a dining room: Chouseian, Yawaragi or the hall, assigned by the inn. Yawaragi has sunken kotatsu seating; table seats at Chouseian need to be requested in advance. Kuon guests eat in their suite.
Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?
The inn asks guests with food allergies to tell it in advance. The official pages say nothing about vegetarian or other diets, so ask before booking.
