Ryokan Tanabe, Takayama (2026): Hot Spring, Rooms, Rules

Ryokan Tanabe Takayama · Hot Spring, Rooms
Guide·October 23, 2026·12 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Ryokan Tanabe is a ryokan in central Takayama, Gifu, founded in 1934 and still run under the same name in its 90s. Its main building, more than a century old, is built in the local Hida style, and an annex called Yubokuan opened in 2009. Before you book, three things matter: the two shared baths have indoor hot-spring water but there is no private bath to reserve; food-allergy requests must reach the inn in writing in advance; and check-in runs 15:00 to 18:00, so a late arrival needs a phone call.

Deliberately not stated: room prices (the booking page loads them only in the browser), the number of rooms, how many guests each room holds, children’s rates, and whether the bathing tax is in the price, none of which the official pages give in writing.

Where is Ryokan Tanabe, and what kind of inn is it?

The inn stands at 58 Aioi-machi, in the middle of Takayama. Its own walking times are about 3 minutes to the old town, 6 minutes to Takayama Jinya, the old government house, and 13 minutes to the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall. The inn says most sights are within walking distance, so you can leave the car and luggage and explore on foot. Our Takayama map lays out the town.

The history page says the family moved from silk-making into the inn trade when the Takayama Main Line opened in 1934, and that the novelist Ryotaro Shiba stayed in 1963; his calligraphy hangs by the front desk. The lobby lounge looks onto a Japanese garden, and a small shop sells Takayama sweets and crafts. Freshly ground coffee is free in the lounge 24 hours a day, women can pick a colored yukata, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Which room should I book at Ryokan Tanabe?

What are the renovated rooms?

Three rooms on the 2nd floor of the main building were renovated in 2023. Sakura (51.5 square meters) pairs a Western room with two Simmons beds and a tatami room. Tachibana (50.5 square meters) is two tatami rooms of 10 and 6 mats with a sofa on the wide veranda. Katsura (40.5 square meters) is a 10-mat room with its own small garden, even though it is upstairs.

Which room has its own open-air bath?

Room 05 in the Yubokuan annex, on the 1st floor, has a semi-open-air cypress bath looking onto a small garden. The water is heated tap water, not hot-spring water; the same goes for every in-room bath. The other annex rooms are 10 tatami mats with a veranda, and the inn notes that you cannot choose a specific annex room.

What about the main building rooms?

The older rooms are all laid out differently: a 10-mat room in a converted storehouse with high beams, a tatami room with two low beds, two-room suites for families or groups, and standard 8-mat rooms with a veranda or sitting area. Every room has its own bath and toilet; one small main-building room has a combined unit bath. The inn takes requests but assigns rooms by party size and plan.

The baths at Ryokan Tanabe

Is the water really from a hot spring?

The indoor baths, one in cypress and one in natural rock, use Hida Takayama hot-spring water, a simple hot spring with a pH of 8.1 that the inn describes as clear and silky. The outdoor Shigaraki pottery tubs use heated water. The inn notes that it heats the spring water, filters and recirculates it, and adds chlorine, and it says plainly that the baths are not large.

When are the baths open?

From 15:00 to 23:00, and again in the morning from 6:00 to 8:30 (6:30 to 8:30 from December to March). The inn notes that it does not currently swap the men’s and women’s sides.

Is there a private bath, and can I bathe with a tattoo?

There is no private family bath. The FAQ suggests going at a quieter time or using the bath in your room. On tattoos, the FAQ says guests can use the baths and asks those with large tattoos to shift their bathing time. See our tattoo and onsen guide for background.

Meals at Ryokan Tanabe

What are dinner and breakfast like?

Dinner is a Hida-style multi-course meal with one dish of A5-grade Hida beef; the steak plan adds a Hida beef steak, and the “Gottso” plan adds a small steak and Hida beef sushi. Breakfast is Japanese, with the local hoba miso grilled on a magnolia leaf; there is no Western option for now. Both meals are served in your room, or in a private dining room for some groups and plans, never shared with other guests.

If you book room-only or with breakfast, the inn cannot add dinner on the day; you would need to rebook on a dinner plan. Its September 2026 notice also asks those guests to reserve a restaurant in advance, as Takayama has limited dinner seats in busy seasons.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

Only with a written request in advance. Use the inn’s English allergy form or email, at least 3 days before your stay, listing the exact ingredients you cannot eat. The inn will not take requests on the day or by phone, cannot prevent cross-contamination, does not accept labels like “vegan” without a list, and does not use halal-certified ingredients. If you cannot eat fish stock or soy sauce, it offers only a special meal without seasoning, not the full course.

Children, cancellation and payment at Ryokan Tanabe

What do children cost?

The official pages do not list children’s rates; check your plan on the booking page. The inn provides bath towels from age 0 and children’s yukata, and offers a kids’ lunch-style menu for preschool children.

What is the cancellation policy?

The official pages list 30 percent from 4 to 7 days before, 50 percent at 2 to 3 days, and 100 percent the day before, on the day or for a no-show. A rule on your plan comes first; groups of 3 rooms or 10 people should ask, and special dates may differ. Our hotel cancellation guide explains how these rules work.

How do I pay, and what taxes are added?

Pay at the front desk in cash or by Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club and some Japanese cards. Takayama has charged an accommodation tax since October 1, 2025: 100, 200 or 300 yen per person per night depending on the room rate, with children exempt until the first March 31 after they turn 12. The city’s bathing tax rate is 150 yen per person; the inn does not say whether it is in the price. See our onsen bathing tax guide.

Getting to Ryokan Tanabe from Takayama Station

Takayama Station, about 7 minutes on foot from the inn according to its FAQ.

There is no shuttle. The inn is about 7 minutes on foot from Takayama Station or about 3 minutes by taxi; in bad weather it suggests the covered arcade along Kokubunji Street. You can leave luggage at the front desk before check-in and after checkout. By car, parking is free but must be booked with your car model, the streets nearby are narrow and one-way, and the paid lot next door to the east is not the inn’s. The inn recommends winter tires from December to March.

  • The inn’s email changed in August 2026; use the address on its news page, not an old one.

  • The main entrance has two steps, and there is an elevator only in the annex. Ask when booking if you need help.
