Suginoi Hotel, Beppu (2026): Pools, Tattoos, Shuttle, Fees

Guide·October 8, 2026·24 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Suginoi Hotel is a large hot spring resort on the hillside above Beppu, in the Kankaiji Onsen area, run by ORIX Hotels & Resorts. It has three guest wings, the tiered open-air bath Tanayu, a swimsuit onsen and a seasonal pool park. Before you book, five things matter. The Aqua Beat pool closes for the season on November 1, 2026. The whole hotel closes for maintenance from January 12 to 18, 2027. Tattoos are not allowed in any public bath or pool. A bathing tax of 250 yen per adult per night is charged on top. And the last free shuttle from Beppu Station leaves at 18:40 on weekdays.

The hotel has no English website written by people: the English switch on its site is a machine translation of the Japanese pages, so we did not use it. The only English the hotel itself wrote is on its official booking page, and parts of that are out of date. Where the English booking page and the Japanese pages disagree, we follow the Japanese and say so.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below comes from Suginoi Hotel’s official Japanese pages, its terms of stay, house rules and commercial disclosure, a 2026 press release, and the official booking pages in Japanese and English, read on October 5, 2026. We have not stayed there. We did not use the machine-translated English pages, the chatbot FAQ or the PDF brochure. Deliberately not stated: room rates, which change by date and plan; buffet prices, which the hotel does not publish; any accommodation tax, which the hotel’s pages do not mention; the tattoo rule for the private baths, which no page states; whether the baths in rooms use onsen water; whether the shuttle bus needs a booking; whether staff speak English; vegetarian and halal meals; the 2027 opening date for Aqua Beat; airport bus fares; and any exception for tattoo cover stickers. The pages we read do not settle them.

What is Suginoi Hotel, and where is it in Beppu?

A city spread along a bay, seen from a bare mountainside
Beppu from Mount Tsurumi, February 2017. Photo: Dime Gontar (CC BY 2.0)

Where exactly is it?

The address is 1 Kankaiji, Beppu, Oita 874-0822. A 2026 press release places the hotel in Kankaiji Onsen, one of the eight hot spring areas of Beppu. It sits high on the hill: the hotel says the top floor of its tallest wing is about 250 meters above sea level. Beppu Station is about 10 minutes away by taxi or shuttle. For the Hells and the rest of the city, see our Beppu guide.

How is the resort laid out?

The hotel spreads over a large site. There are three guest wings, Sorakan, Hoshikan and Nijikan, plus Suginoi Palace, the entertainment building that holds Tanayu, and the Aqua Beat pool. The Nijikan page says its wing has rooms only, so you reach the baths and restaurants by the site’s circulating bus or on foot. Since August 2026, a free tuk-tuk also runs between the wings and Suginoi Palace for hotel guests, for now in the evening and at night.

How do I contact the hotel?

The reservation center is 0977-78-8888, open 9:00 to 19:00. The main number is 0977-24-1141, and the email address on the official pages is info@suginoi-hotel.com.

Suginoi Hotel wings: Sorakan, Hoshikan and Nijikan

Which wings are open?

Three. Sorakan opened on January 26, 2023, and Hoshikan in January 2025. The old Naka-kan wing closed on January 6, 2025, and the Honkan main building closed earlier, after a 2022 notice. The English booking page still describes the hotel as Sorakan, Naka-kan and Nijikan and does not mention Hoshikan, so ignore that description.

Official wing pages, Sorayu page and booking pages, read October 5, 2026.

What are Sorakan rooms like?

Sorakan has suites, junior suites, deluxe, premium standard and standard rooms, a universal room and a Miki House room for families. The booking page lists the Standard Twin (mountain side) at 26 sqm for 1 or 2 guests, the Premium Standard at 36 sqm (mountain side, 2 to 4 guests) or 33 sqm (ocean side, 1 to 4 guests), and the Suite at 90.57 sqm. Rooms run up to the 12th floor, and the Sorayu bath is on the 13th.

What about Hoshikan?

Hoshikan rooms are described as having the feel of a hot spring inn. Types run from Standard rooms on the mountain or ocean side up to Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suites and Suites, plus a universal room built without steps for wheelchair users. The Sai kaiseki restaurant is on its 12th floor.

Why is Nijikan cheaper, and what is the catch?

Nijikan is the casual wing. The Casual Twin is 21 sqm for 2 or 3 guests, with no bathtub, only a shower booth, a bidet toilet and a separate washbasin. The Double, Loft and Skip rooms are also shower-only, and in the Loft you make up the bed yourself. The exception is the universal room, 33 sqm with a bath. Nijikan guests cannot use Sorayu, and both the baths and the restaurant are in other buildings. The first floor has luggage lockers and self check-in machines.

Are the rooms non-smoking?

Yes. The wing pages say all guest rooms are non-smoking. The English booking page lists free Wi-Fi in all rooms and an amenity bar in the lobby.

Getting to Suginoi Hotel from Beppu Station and Oita Airport

How does the free shuttle from Beppu Station work?

A free shuttle runs between Beppu Station West Exit (the mountain side) and the hotel. Leave the West Exit, turn right, walk toward the yellow Times Car Rental sign, and wait inside the fence by the shuttle sign; the stop is in the Hotel Fujiyoshi parking lot. From the station, buses call at Hoshikan, Suginoi Palace, Nijikan and Sorakan.

Official access page timetable, read October 5, 2026.

In the daytime, buses leave every 20 minutes in some hours, and from the 10:00 to the 17:00 hour on weekends. On a weekday, if your train gets in after 18:40, plan on a taxi. The page does not say whether you need to book the bus.

How long is the train from Fukuoka?

The hotel gives about 1 hour 50 minutes from Hakata and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Kokura to Beppu by limited express on the Nippo Line, then about 10 minutes by taxi or shuttle.

How do I get there from Oita Airport?

There is no free airport shuttle on the official pages. The hotel lists two options: a taxi, about 45 minutes, or the Air Liner airport bus to the Beppu Kitahama stop, about 40 minutes, then a taxi of about 15 minutes. Fares are not listed.

Can I drive and park?

Yes. The hotel is about 5 minutes from Beppu IC, and it asks you to enter the main number, 0977-24-1141, in your car navigation and not to drive further up the road past the hotel, where it narrows. Parking is free, with about 900 spaces. The multi-story car parks take vehicles up to 2.1 meters high; taller vehicles use the flat lots, and motorcycles may not use the multi-story parks. Sorakan guests drive to the Sorakan entrance, Hoshikan guests park in lot 5, and Nijikan guests in lot 2 next to the wing. Lot 4 has 8 EV charging spaces; bring a cable and the WeCharge app. Our hotel parking fees guide compares other hotels.

Check-in, late arrival and checkout at Suginoi Hotel

What time are check-in and checkout?

The booking pages give check-in from 15:00 and checkout by 11:00. Most plans show check-in between 15:00 and 19:00; one Sorakan suite plan starts at 14:00.

What happens if I arrive late?

Two deadlines: the booking pages show check-in until 19:00, but the hotel’s terms of stay set the latest check-in at 20:00 on the day. If you have not arrived by then without contacting the hotel, or 2 hours after the arrival time you gave, the terms say the hotel may treat the booking as canceled by you.

Call the reservation center if you will be late. Remember that the weekday shuttle stops at 18:40, so a late train means a taxi as well as a phone call.

Can I use the baths before check-in or after checkout?

Yes. The Tanayu, Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat pages say that before check-in you first complete arrival at the front desk. After checkout, you can enter once by showing your receipt or card jacket.

What does a late checkout cost?

The terms charge for staying past checkout as a share of that day’s room rate: 30 percent for up to 3 hours, 50 percent for up to 6 hours, and the full rate beyond that.

Tanayu, Sorayu and the private baths at Suginoi Hotel

What is Tanayu?

Tanayu is the hotel’s big open-air bath in Suginoi Palace, with five tiers laid out like rice terraces. The hotel says that on clear days you can see as far as Cape Sada in Shikoku. There are saunas and other small baths, and it was renewed in July 2023. It holds 768 people in total.

When is Tanayu open?

From October to late March, guests can bathe from 6:00 to 24:00. Spring and summer hours start earlier, at 5:00 or 5:30. Day visitors can bathe from 9:00 to 23:00, with last entry at 22:00. Bath and face towels are at the counter, so you do not need to bring the ones from your room.

Is the water straight from the source?

No. The hotel describes the spring as sodium chloride and sulfate, and says the water has water added, is heated, and is recirculated and filtered, with chlorine for hygiene. The same applies at Sorayu.

How is Sorayu different?

Sorayu is on the top floor of Sorakan, about 250 meters above sea level. It is only for Sorakan guests and some Hoshikan rooms: Standard (ocean side), Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suite and Suite. Nijikan plans say it is not available; Hoshikan mountain-side Standard rooms are not on the list. From October to late March it is open 6:00 to 10:00 and 15:00 to 24:00, and closed in between. The men’s side has a dry sauna and the women’s a mist sauna.

Can I book a private bath?

Yes, but it is not included. Oita Goto is a set of five private baths on the second floor of Suginoi Palace, open 11:00 to 24:00, with bookings taken from 9:00 until 21:00 at the Tanayu counter, on the day only. Sixty minutes in four of the rooms costs 4,100 yen on weekdays and 5,100 yen on weekends, holidays and set peak dates; the fifth room, Take, costs 5,500 or 6,500 yen. The peak dates include October 10 to 12 and November 21 to 23, 2026. Day visitors can book them too.

Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat pools at the Beppu resort

What is Aqua Garden?

Aqua Garden is an outdoor hot spring pool where you wear a swimsuit, so families and couples can bathe together. It has a view spa, jets, a walking bath and other pools, and is open 11:00 to 22:00. A fountain show of about 10 minutes runs at 19:30, 20:00, 20:45 and 21:30. Bring a swimsuit; rentals start at 440 yen. Children not yet out of diapers need swim pants, and children of elementary school age and younger must enter with a guardian aged 18 or over.

When does Aqua Beat close for the season?

Aqua Beat closes on November 1, 2026. The official page says the 2026 season is scheduled to end on that day. From October 1 it is open 11:00 to 17:00, with last entry an hour before closing and last swim 30 minutes before. If your stay is from November 2, there is no Aqua Beat.

Aqua Beat is the hotel’s pool park, with a heated indoor pool and slides. You cannot walk straight between Aqua Beat and Aqua Garden; check out at the counter to move between them. The hotel has not announced when the 2027 season starts.

Are there rules on the slides?

Yes. The slides are closed to anyone under 120 cm tall, anyone weighing 101 kg or more, and pairs whose weights differ by 41 kg or more. The pirate ship is for ages 6 to 12. Balls, water guns and cooler boxes are not allowed. Swimsuits rent for 440 to 1,100 yen and floats for 440 to 660 yen, but there are no baby floats to rent or buy.

Do hotel guests pay for the pools and Tanayu?

No. The Tanayu, Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat pages say the fee is included in the room rate for guests; rentals cost extra. Our hotel pool fees guide shows how other hotels charge.

What do day visitors pay?

Tanayu + Aqua Garden, weekends and holidays2,400 yen1,700 yen

Aqua Beat, weekends and holidays3,100 yen2,100 yen

Official Tanayu and Aqua Beat pages, read October 5, 2026. Under 3 free at Tanayu and Aqua Garden. Tax included.

Aqua Beat day tickets are sold online only, from two weeks before, with no ticket window. Other special Tanayu rates apply over New Year, 3,200 yen for adults from December 28 to January 3, and the hotel says prices from April 1, 2027 are not set. Day visitors cannot use the buffet restaurants.

Tattoos at Suginoi Hotel

Can I use the baths or pools with a tattoo?

No. A sign shown on the Tanayu, Sorayu, Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat pages says, in our translation, that people who are drunk and people with tattoos are refused entry. The English booking page agrees: “Intoxicated people & people with Tattoos are not permitted to enter our public baths and swimming pools.” The rule covers the swimsuit areas too, not only the onsen.

Is there a way around it?

The hotel publishes none. No page mentions cover stickers or any other exception, and no page states a tattoo rule for the private baths, so we do not suggest them. Most Nijikan rooms have only a shower. If you have a tattoo, ask the hotel before you book, or look at our tattoos and onsen guide for other options.

Dinner and breakfast at Suginoi Hotel

Where will I eat?

Your wing decides your restaurant, through the plan you book. Sorakan plans use Terrace & Dining Sora on the first floor of Sorakan, for Sorakan guests only, a buffet built mostly on Western food with about 30 kinds of premium alcohol. Hoshikan plans use Wa Dining Hoshi, a mostly Japanese buffet with sushi made in front of you and straw-grilled robatayaki. Nijikan plans use Ceada Palace in Suginoi Palace, a separate building, with Neapolitan pizza from a stone oven.

What are the buffet hours?

All three buffets serve dinner from 17:00 to 21:30, last entry 20:00, with about 100 minutes as a guide, and breakfast from 7:00 to 10:00, last entry 9:30. Drinks are free at dinner, but alcohol is not served to drivers or anyone under 20. The hotel does not publish a price for the buffets on their own.

Can I switch to the kaiseki restaurant?

Yes, for a fee. Sai, on the 12th floor of Hoshikan, serves Japanese kaiseki in two seatings, 17:30 and 19:30; you choose your time at the front desk on the day. Moving from the Sora or Hoshi buffet to Sai costs 5,000 yen per adult, 3,500 yen per elementary school child and 2,500 yen per younger child; from Ceada Palace it is 7,000, 4,900 and 3,500 yen. Call the reservation center by 18:00 the day before.

What if I have a food allergy?

Plan ahead. The allergy page says the buffets do not make allergy menus or give allergen information. You may bring allergen-free food and your own tableware if you say so when you book. Only Sai handles the eight main allergens, with an adult-only kaiseki that leaves them out; it cannot help if you only tell staff on the day, and it asks guests with a history of anaphylaxis not to use it.

Children at Suginoi Hotel

Can my child come into my bath?

Up to age 6. The Japanese bath pages say Oita Prefecture changed its rules on January 1, 2022, and a parent may take a child of the opposite sex into the bath only up to age 6. The English booking page words it as under 6 and preschool; we follow the Japanese.

Is there a child rate?

Yes. The terms set elementary school children, ages 7 to 12, at 70 percent of the adult rate, preschool children aged 3 to 6 at 50 percent, and children 2 and under at 3,000 yen before tax if they get bedding. The booking pages use the same age bands, but a plan can price differently, so check the final booking screen. For how other hotels handle children, see our kids stay free guide.

Are there rules for children at the pools?

Yes. Children of elementary school age and younger need a guardian aged 18 or over at Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat, and on the tuk-tuk. Sorakan also has a Miki House room designed for families.

Terms of stay, commercial disclosure and Japanese booking page, read October 5, 2026.

Three Japanese sources agree on this table. The English booking page shows an older, stricter table, adding 20 percent from 5 days before and 10 percent from 7 days, plus a peak-season table for 2022. The terms also say plans and partner travel agencies can set different fees, and that from June 1, 2026 the hotel bills cancellation fees through a service called Payn. Check the terms shown when you book. Our hotel cancellation guide compares policies across Japan.

Can I pay at the hotel?

It depends on which booking page you use. The Japanese booking page offers payment at the hotel or online by card. The English booking page says payment is online by credit card only. Check at booking. At the hotel, the commercial disclosure lists cash, major cards including Visa, JCB, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club, QR payments such as PayPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay, and transport IC cards. The hotel will not pay taxi fares or shipping for you to settle later.

What taxes are added?

Prices on the booking pages include consumption tax and a 10 percent service charge. On top of that, adults pay a bathing tax of 250 yen per night, or 500 yen if the rate is over 50,000 yen per person (the booking pages say before tax), collected separately. The hotel’s pages do not mention an accommodation tax.

When is the hotel closed?

The official booking pages say the whole hotel is scheduled to close for maintenance from January 12 to 18, 2027. Guests staying on January 11 or January 19 may find facility hours changed or some facilities closed. The notice is on the booking pages, not the hotel’s news page.

Who Suginoi Hotel suits

Families and groups who want a big Beppu onsen resort with a swimsuit pool, a buffet in the plan and free parking, and who choose their wing with care: Sorakan for Sorayu, Nijikan for a shower-only room. It is a harder fit for anyone with a tattoo, anyone who wants the Aqua Beat pool after November 1, 2026, and anyone booking January 12 to 18, 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Aqua Beat pool at Suginoi Hotel open in winter?

No. Signs on the Tanayu, Sorayu, Aqua Garden and Aqua Beat pages say people with tattoos are refused, and the English booking page says people with tattoos are not permitted to enter the public baths and swimming pools. No exception for cover stickers is stated.
When does the last shuttle leave Beppu Station for Suginoi Hotel?
The free shuttle’s last departure from Beppu Station West Exit is 18:40 on weekdays and 20:40 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. After that, take a taxi; the hotel says the ride is about 10 minutes.

The hotel’s terms, its commercial disclosure and the Japanese booking page agree: free until 4 days before, 30 percent from 3 days before, 50 percent the day before, and 100 percent on the day or for a no-show. The English booking page shows an older, stricter table, so check the terms shown when you book.
Is there an extra tax at Suginoi Hotel?
Yes. Adults pay a bathing tax of 250 yen per night, or 500 yen if the rate is over 50,000 yen per person, charged separately from the room price. The hotel’s pages do not mention an accommodation tax.
Which rooms at Suginoi Hotel can use the Sorayu bath?
Sorakan guests, and Hoshikan guests in Standard (ocean side), Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suite and Suite rooms. Nijikan plans state that Sorayu is not available. Hoshikan mountain-side Standard rooms are not on the list, so check your plan. Everyone staying can use Tanayu.
Can children go into the opposite-sex bath at Suginoi Hotel?
Up to age 6. The Japanese bath pages say Oita Prefecture’s rules changed on January 1, 2022, and a parent can take a child of the opposite sex into the bath only up to age 6.
