The Pokémon Cafe is the hardest easy booking in Japan. There is no lottery, no queue and no agent — just a website that opens at a fixed time and a set of rules that are genuinely different from what almost every English guide describes.
Tokyo reopened on June 17, 2026 after a three-month renovation, and it came back with shorter hours, a new arrival rule, a new menu and higher prices. If you are reading a guide that says the cafe is open until 22:00, or that you should arrive ten minutes early, that guide is describing the pre-renovation cafe.

How the reservation actually works
A Japanese visitor films the whole reservation attempt and then the visit itself, including the moment slots open. You do not need the narration to see how the booking screen behaves and what the table actually looks like when you get there.
Reservations drop one month at a time, not on a rolling window
This is the single most misreported fact about this cafe. Bookings do not open a fixed number of days ahead. The operator releases an entire calendar month in one go, at 18:00 Japan time.
For September 2026, booking opened at 18:00 on Saturday, August 1, covering September 1 through September 30 — every seat for the month, released at the same moment. The same pattern held for the four previous months. The operator states each time that dates beyond the released period will be announced later, and as of August 6, 2026 nothing beyond September 30 had been published.
Bookings stay open until 08:00 on the day itself
Less famous, and more useful: you can book right up to 08:00 on the morning of your visit. That is the operator's stated cutoff. It is worth checking the site on a quiet weekday morning even if the month looked full weeks ago.
It is also the reason we will not repeat the "sells out in one to two minutes" line you will see elsewhere. The operator has never published any figure for demand, sell-out speed or competition — not in its FAQ, not on either booking site, not in any 2026 announcement. A same-day cutoff would be pointless if every slot really vanished at 18:01.
The email code, and the one-address-one-booking rule
The flow is web-only — phone and email bookings are not accepted — and it includes an email verification step. A code is sent from @mail-pokemon-cafe.jp, so allow that domain through your spam filter before you start. If it does not arrive there is a resend button, and a mistyped address is fixed by going back one screen.
Note also that the verification is by email, not SMS. Guides describing a text-message code are describing something the operator does not document.
What the phone number is actually for
A phone number is collected, and the terms are firmer than most guides let on: the operator says it may contact you to confirm the booking or advise a change, and that if it concludes it cannot reach you, the reservation may be voided.
What the operator does not say is whether the number must be Japanese. There is no statement about international formats in either the Japanese or the English FAQ, and the booking form itself is behind a security challenge we could not read — so we are not going to tell you it works or that it does not. What we can say is that a number you can answer matters in practice, because same-day cancellation is by telephone only.
Canceling, and the myth about cancellation seats
You can cancel yourself until 22:00 the night before
Self-service cancellation runs through the link in your confirmation email, or the booking lookup page, until 22:00 the day before. After that it is a phone call to the branch — Tokyo and Osaka have separate numbers. Canceling also cancels any goods you pre-purchased with the booking.
And do not be late: ten minutes past your slot with no contact and the booking auto-cancels, with the operator specifically noting that public transport delays are not an exception.
🚨 Do not plan on catching a cancellation in Tokyo
Its reopening notice states the branch is fully reservation-based for the time being, that same-day admission is undecided, and asks visitors not to wait around near the store.
There is an older, generic FAQ line saying seats are offered at the storefront when same-day cancellations occur. It is undated, and it is contradicted by the newer Tokyo-specific notice — so we would treat it as possibly still true for Osaka and not for Tokyo. And note what nobody official has ever said: that canceled slots go back online. We could not find that claim on any operator page.
Party size, seats and the rules at the table
Six people, and children count from zero
The cap is six per reservation. Seven or more must split, with the second-email trap described above. Children count toward the total from age zero, so a family of four adults and two babies is already at the limit.
Seat type constrains you further, and it differs by city. In Tokyo, seat A takes 2–4 people, seat B takes 1–2, and seat C takes 1–6 — so a solo visitor needs B or C. In Osaka, seats A and B take 2–6 and only seat C goes down to one. You cannot pick your seat, and you cannot change the party size after booking.
90 minutes, and one order per person aged six
Your table is yours for 90 minutes from your slot time, with last order 30 minutes before the end. Arriving late does not buy you extra time. The minimum is one menu item per person aged 6 or over; we found no cover charge, seating charge or table charge published anywhere on the official site.
The in-cafe show runs about ten minutes. Worth knowing before you build a day around it: if it is changed, canceled or cut short, the operator states there is no refund and no date transfer.

Goods pre-purchased during booking are credit card only, and the operator warns some debit and prepaid cards are refused.
🚨 Booking agents will get you turned away
The terms ban proxy booking, using a proxy-booked reservation, and handing your details to a third party for that purpose — alongside resale and transfer. If it is discovered, the operator states it may void the reservation and refuse entry, with no refund of anything, including goods you paid for in advance.
Book it yourself, or do not go. There is no legitimate shortcut.
Practical notes for foreign visitors
- Menus exist in English, Simplified Chinese and Korean. You do not need Japanese to order.
- You can buy the merchandise without any reservation. The operator states it plainly — visit for the shop alone if the tables are gone. Limit is three per product.
- No allergen substitutions of any kind. The operator will not remove ingredients or alter dishes. If you have a serious allergy, this is a real constraint.
- Unopened commercial baby food may be brought in; no other outside food, and nothing may be taken away.
- Entirely non-smoking. Infant chairs, infant cutlery, stroller storage and wheelchair access are available on request.
- Tokyo closes when its department store closes. The cafe sits inside one, and takes its building's closure days.
