Miyajima Hotel Makoto is a six-story Japanese-style inn on Miyajima, the island off Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. It sits about five minutes uphill on foot from the ferry pier and about ten minutes from Itsukushima Shrine, and calls itself a culinary inn for families. Before you book, three things matter: the room and its view are assigned unless you pay for the sea side; dinner has to start by 19:30; and the island has few restaurants open at night, so the inn’s dinner plans are worth a look.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Miyajima Hotel Makoto’s official Japanese and English pages and its official booking page, plus the Hiroshima Prefecture and Hatsukaichi City tax pages, read on October 16, 2026. We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: the tattoo rule and any curfew, which the official pages do not give, and the afternoon opening time of the large baths and the group cut-off for cancellation, where the official pages give different figures.

Getting to Miyajima Hotel Makoto on Miyajima

The only way across from the mainland is the ferry. From JR Hiroshima Station, the Sanyo Line takes about 30 minutes to Miyajimaguchi, and the pier is a short walk from the station. The ferry, run by JR West Miyajima Ferry and Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, takes about 10 minutes, needs no booking and costs 200 yen one way for adults. Our Hiroshima to Miyajima guide compares the routes.

Will the inn pick me up at the pier?

Yes. When you board at Miyajimaguchi, call the inn with your departure time and staff will meet you at Miyajima pier. They can also take only your luggage, and after checkout they will bring bags back to the pier. The pickup runs only between the pier and the hotel. The access page also gives a six-step walking route to the yellow building.

Can I bring a car?

The inn has no partner parking at Miyajimaguchi. If you take your car across on the ferry, there is free parking space beside the hotel, but the round-trip car ferry fare is yours to pay. The last ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima leaves at 22:42.

B3rd12.5 mats9Yes
C4th12.5 mats + 5-mat anteroom5No (toilet only)

All types sleep up to 6. From the official rooms page, read October 16, 2026.

Every room has two washbasins, a 32-inch TV, an empty fridge, free Wi-Fi and a washlet toilet; some rooms have no safe. Type C guests use the large baths. Yukata, towels and slippers are in the room, and other amenities are at a bar by the front desk. On the booking page, the room size is left to the hotel, and bath and toilet are separate.

Can I choose the view?

Only by paying. The inn says it has few rooms with a good view, so an assigned room may face the mountain, the back of the hotel or the slope beside it, or have no view. A sea-side room costs 2,200 yen extra per person. Sea-side rooms do not look onto Itsukushima Shrine, but they do take in the Great Torii, the town, the sea and the far shore.

Meals at Miyajima Hotel Makoto

What are dinner and breakfast like?

There are three kaiseki dinners: Isaribi, Unkai and the chef’s Ebisu, which uses A5 Hiroshima beef. The sample menus include rice cooked with conger eel. From about November to March, oysters appear; tell the inn in advance if you cannot eat them, as changes on the day are not possible. You choose a dinner start between 17:30 and 19:30 at check-in. Breakfast is a set Japanese meal, not a buffet, starting between 7:00 and 8:30, with clam miso soup you can refill. Both meals are at round tables in the 2nd-floor hall, or a 3rd-floor hall when it is full; other guests share the room but not your table, and you cannot choose the hall.

Can the inn handle allergies or a vegetarian diet?

The FAQ says the inn will do what it can for allergies, vegetarian, vegan and religious diets if you send details in advance. Requests on the day cannot be handled, and severe, life-threatening allergies may be beyond what the kitchen can manage.

The baths at Miyajima Hotel Makoto

What are the large baths like?

There is one indoor bath for men, Hakubai, and one for women, Kobai, each 88 square meters. There is no outdoor bath. They close at midnight and reopen from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning; the official pages give different afternoon opening times, so check at the front desk. Bring the towels from your room, as none are kept at the baths.

Is there a private bath?

Yes. The private bath Koume, for up to three people, is free for 40 minutes, limited to three groups a day: 17:00, 20:00 and 22:00. It is first come, first served, one slot per group.

Do school trips affect the baths?

The inn takes school groups all year and posts the dates on its site; on those days, some hours at the large baths and the family bath are reserved for students. Check the school-trip dates page before you book. The official pages say nothing about tattoos, so ask the inn directly.

How much does a stay cost?

With two guests per room, the booking page starts at 13,200 yen per person room only, 15,950 yen with breakfast, and 20,350 yen with dinner and breakfast on the Isaribi or family plan, rising to 22,550 yen for Unkai and 24,750 yen for Ebisu. Prices include tax. On top come Hiroshima’s accommodation tax of 200 yen per person per night for room rates of 6,000 yen or more, paid in cash at the inn, and Miyajima’s visitor tax of 100 yen, collected with the ferry fare. Preschoolers are exempt from the visitor tax.

What do children cost?

Children of elementary-school age and younger pay half the adult rate with a children’s meal; a child eating the adult menu pays the adult rate. How do I pay?

Pay at the inn or by card online; the New Year plan is online card only. At the inn, JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and several Japanese cards and debit cards are accepted.
