Guide·October 23, 2026·11 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Yukyu no Yado Shiraito is a small onsen inn in Jozankei Onsen, in the hills of Sapporo’s Minami Ward, about 60 minutes by car from JR Sapporo Station. It began as a restaurant in 1918, became a hot-spring inn in 1939, and is named after Shiraito Falls, about a 10-minute walk away. Before you book, three things matter: the front door is locked at 21:30, the booking page refuses guests with tattoos in the baths, and there is no English website, so plans and rules are in Japanese.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Yukyu no Yado Shiraito’s official Japanese site and its official booking page (also in Japanese), plus Sapporo City’s tax pages, read on October 14, 2026. We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: the number of rooms, room sizes, card brands, vegetarian or halal options, a shuttle and the nearest train station, which the official pages do not give; the airport bus times, because the inn’s figures are from 2019; and a few details where the official pages give different figures, such as private-bath fees and children’s meal prices. Ask the inn for those.

Rooms and the 2026 annex at Yukyu no Yado Shiraito

What kind of rooms are there?

The main building has Japanese rooms with a washlet toilet but no private bath, plus air conditioning, a washbasin and a hair dryer. The booking page lists a 10-mat Japanese room, a Japanese room with beds and a Japanese-Western room with two semi-double beds, while the main site describes the rooms as Japanese style, so check the room type on the plan you choose. Yukata, towels, a toothbrush, a razor and a shower cap are provided, and shampoo and body soap are in the baths.

What is new in 2026?

A new annex opened in 2026 with only four rooms, each a Japanese-Western room with two semi-double beds and its own bath of free-flowing hot-spring water. A 2022 renovation also added an elevator and renewed the indoor bath, dining room and lobby. The booking page notes there are still places in the building with two or three steps.

What are the baths like?

There are four baths: two large indoor baths and two open-air baths with windows that open. The inn says all use 100 percent free-flowing spring water, with water added but not recirculated; the source is 80.1°C. The indoor baths and open-air baths are in separate buildings. The open-air baths are open by gender from 17:00 to 21:00 and from 6:00 to 9:30. The official pages give different hours for the large indoor baths, so ask the inn if you plan to bathe late at night.

Is there a private bath?

Yes. The open-air bath can be booked privately for 50 minutes for a fee, once from 16:00 and once in the evening, for a limited number of groups a day. The booking page asks you to apply by phone in advance. The official pages list different fees, so confirm the price when you call. There is no day-trip bathing for visitors.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official booking page says guests with tattoos cannot use or enter the baths; the main site does not mention it. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains other options in Japan.

Is there anything else to relax with?

Massage is available from 16:00 to 23:30, at 6,600 yen for 60 minutes, 9,900 yen for 90 minutes and 13,200 yen for 120 minutes.

Mankitsu-zen, the standard dinner, features the inn’s grilled dish of seafood and mountain produce; Yuttari-zen has 13 dishes and Yuyu-zen 10 dishes on set dates. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal from 8:00 to 9:00.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?
