Tokyo to Yokohama (2026): Every Route Priced from Official Fare Tables — and the JR Trap

Tokyo to Yokohama — Honto Japan
Guide·August 12, 2026·14 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Yokohama is the day trip Tokyo forgets to brag about: Japan's second-largest city, a harbor skyline, the country's biggest Chinatown — and it starts at ¥310 from Shibuya. This guide prices every route from the operators' own official fare tables (the PDFs, not blog hearsay), matches each sight to its actual station, and explains the one fare we deliberately refuse to print.

Honto check: Tokyu and Keikyu fares were read from the operators' official fare-table PDFs, the day passes and station-to-sight mapping from the Minatomirai Line's official pages, and the timetable-revision date from Tokyu's official timetable index — all on August 10, 2026. 🚨 Deliberately not stated: JR fares (JR East revised fares in March 2026 and its site blocked our reading — see below), express-service minutes (no official static figure exists), last-train times (the official PDFs defeated text extraction), and station-to-sight walking minutes (the official pages publish none). Through fares to Minatomirai Line stations are computed sums of the two operators' official tables, labeled as such.

What the trip and the harbor district actually look like:

The route everyone should default to: Toyoko → Minatomirai Line

From Shibuya, the Tokyu Toyoko Line is the tourist's route not because it's cheapest (though it is — ¥310 against the official table) but because it keeps going: at Yokohama Station the same train dives underground and becomes the Minatomirai Line, delivering you to the sightseeing district with zero transfers. The official standard timing is about 35 minutes Shibuya–Yokohama on the through service — the operator explicitly notes service type changes this, and no official page publishes the express-only minutes the blogs love, so plan loosely. Through fares, computed from the two operators' official tables (no discount applies to this pairing, per the MM line's own transfer-discount rules): ¥510 to Minatomirai, ¥540 to Motomachi-Chukagai at the Chinatown end.

Which station for which sight?

The Minatomirai Line's official station pages draw the map for you: Minatomirai Station is the skyscraper quarter — Landmark Tower, the Yokohama Museum of Art, Pacifico and Queen's Square are its listed neighbors. Motomachi-Chukagai Station is the payoff stop: Chinatown, Yamashita Park, the Motomachi shopping street and Harbor View Park, all officially at its exits. The Red Brick Warehouse sits between worlds — Bashamichi Station's own page calls itself the midpoint of Minato Mirai and the historic quarter. The classic loop: off at Minatomirai, walk the waterfront east past the Red Brick, dinner in Chinatown, home from Motomachi-Chukagai — one day ticket, zero backtracking. Where a Yokohama day slots into a longer route is in our two-week itinerary.

🚨 The JR fare we refuse to print

So how should I handle JR?

Every English guide quotes JR's Tokyo–Yokohama fare from the ¥490 era. Here's the problem, stated plainly: JR East revised its fares in March 2026, and its website blocked every automated attempt we made to read the new tables — so we cannot verify the current number, and neither can the guides still reprinting the old one. Our rule is absolute: no number we haven't seen at the source. What we can say officially: JR's Tokaido, Yokosuka and Shonan-Shinjuku lines remain the fastest Yokohama routes from Tokyo Station, Shinagawa and the Shinjuku/Shibuya west side, IC cards work, and the fare board above any JR ticket machine settles the question in five seconds. If a guide shows you a JR fare with no as-of date, you now know what it's worth.

The passes: ¥460 that does a full day's work

Which pass fits which plan?

The Minatomirai Line One-Day Ticket — officially ¥460 adult, ¥230 child, from any MM station machine — is the quiet best buy in Yokohama: singles on the line cost enough that three hops break even, and the ticket moonlights as a coupon (the line's official August 2026 tie-up takes ¥200 off Red Brick Warehouse event admission on presentation). Starting from Tokyo, the Tokyu Minatomirai Pass wraps the Shibuya round trip and that unlimited day into ¥920 — effectively ¥300 over the bare round trip for all-day freedom — with two official fine-print items: it's sold at Tokyu machines only (you cannot buy it in Yokohama for the return) and it's valid only on the day of purchase. Families, one official rounding quirk: child fares differ by medium — tickets round half-fare up to ¥10, IC rounds down to the yen.

Paying: IC everywhere, and one line ahead of the curve

Do I even need a Suica for this trip?

Suica and PASMO work on every route in this guide, per each operator's official pages — top-up logistics in our Suica guide. The Minatomirai Line goes one better, officially: open-loop contactless — tap a compatible credit, debit or prepaid card directly at the gate, no Japanese IC card required. That makes the Yokohama leg one of the few Japanese rail rides a day-one arrival can pay for with the card already in their pocket. One timing footnote for planners: all through-service timetables on this corridor were revised March 14, 2026 — treat any last-train time published before that as expired, and check the station apps on the night.

FAQ

What’s the cheapest way from Tokyo to Yokohama?
The Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya: ¥310 by paper ticket, ¥309 by IC card, straight from the official fare table — about 35 minutes to Yokohama Station by the operator’s own standard figure. From Shinagawa, Keikyu runs it at ¥320 (¥313 IC). JR is competitive too, but see the JR answer below for why we won’t print its fare.
How do I get directly to Yokohama’s Chinatown?
Stay on the Toyoko Line — it continues underground as the Minatomirai Line, no transfer, ending at Motomachi-Chukagai Station, which the line’s official page places at the doorstep of Chinatown, Yamashita Park, Motomachi and Harbor View Park. The through fare from Shibuya computes to ¥540 by ticket (¥533 IC) from the two operators’ official tables. For the Minato Mirai skyscraper-and-museum district, exit two stops earlier at Minatomirai Station.
Why won’t you print the JR fare?
Because we couldn’t verify it and the old number is officially dead. JR East revised fares in March 2026, and its website blocks automated reading — so the ¥490-era Tokyo–Yokohama fares in essentially every English guide are pre-revision figures. Rather than reprint a stale number, our rule is simple: check the fare board or your IC card charge at the station. JR’s routes themselves (Tokaido, Yokosuka, Shonan-Shinjuku lines from Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku) remain the fastest options from the Yamanote’s east side.
Is there a day pass for Yokohama?
Two official ones, both excellent. The Minatomirai Line One-Day Ticket — ¥460 adult, ¥230 child, unlimited rides on the sightseeing line all day, sold at station machines — pays off on the third hop and doubles as an event coupon (August 2026’s official tie-up gives ¥200 off Red Brick Warehouse event entry on showing it). Coming from Tokyo, the Tokyu Minatomirai Pass bundles the Shibuya round trip plus that unlimited day for ¥920 (child ¥470) — versus ¥620 for the bare round trip, it’s a ¥300 upgrade for freedom. Official catches: sold at Tokyu machines only (you can’t buy it in Yokohama), valid only on the purchase day.
Which Yokohama station is closest to each sight?
From the line’s official station pages: Minatomirai Station sits at the center of the skyscraper district — Landmark Tower, Yokohama Museum of Art, Pacifico and Queen’s Square are its official neighbors. Motomachi-Chukagai Station serves Chinatown, Yamashita Park, Motomachi shopping street and Harbor View Park. The Red Brick Warehouse falls officially between districts — Bashamichi Station describes itself as the midpoint between Minato Mirai and the historic quarter — and Nihon-odori also works. We won’t quote walk minutes; the official pages don’t.
Can I use Suica or PASMO — or just tap my credit card?
IC cards work on every route here, officially — and the Minatomirai Line goes further: its official ticket page confirms open-loop contactless payment, meaning you can tap a compatible credit, debit or prepaid card straight at the gate, no Suica needed. One nerdy official detail for families: child fares round differently by medium — paper tickets round half-fare up to ¥10 units, IC rounds down to the yen.
How long does Tokyo to Yokohama actually take?
The only operator-published figure is the Minatomirai Line’s official ‘about 35 minutes’ for Yokohama–Shibuya on the through service, with the explicit caveat that service type changes the time — expresses are faster, locals slower. English guides love quoting ’26 minutes by limited express’; no official static page states it, so treat precise minutes as timetable-dependent. Note also that all through-service timetables were revised on March 14, 2026 — last-train times from older articles are stale.
Is Yokohama worth a day trip from Tokyo?
It’s the easiest big day trip in the region — Japan’s second city, 30-something minutes and ¥310 away. The standard loop: Minatomirai Station for the harbor skyline and museums, walk the waterfront past the Red Brick Warehouse, finish in Chinatown for dinner, ride home from Motomachi-Chukagai. August 2026 bonus for families, from the line’s own news feed: a Pokémon-wrapped train runs from August 2 and a station photo rally all month. It slots cleanly into any Tokyo-based week.
Should I take the Shinkansen to Yokohama?
Almost never for this trip — the shinkansen stops at Shin-Yokohama, which is a subway ride from the harbor sights, and the private-rail routes above deliver you to the waterfront directly for a tenth of the cost. The exception is through-travelers: if you’re already on a Tokaido Shinkansen heading west, Shin-Yokohama is a legitimate boarding point that skips backtracking into Tokyo.
