Tsuchiya Ryokan Kinosaki Onsen · Adults Only
Guide·October 14, 2026·9 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Tsuchiya Ryokan is an inn in Kinosaki Onsen, Hyogo, that describes itself as a space of Japanese cuisine, art and architecture, with about 100 years in the town. It reopened after a renovation in November 2024, its first in about 50 years. Before you book, three things matter: it is adults only; its two private baths are free without a booking; and dinner starts at 18:00 for every guest, so check-in on dinner plans closes at 18:00.

The halls are hung with works by Japanese-style painter Tsuyoshi Yamada, the family’s second son, and the inn and its annex across the street, UTSUROI, are presented as a pair. There is no elevator; rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the whole inn is non-smoking with no smoking area.

The baths at Tsuchiya Ryokan

How do the private baths work?

There are two private baths, both free and without booking. If one is empty, turn the sign at the entrance, lock the door and take as long as you like. They open at 15:00 and close at 22:30, and open again from 7:00 the next morning.

What is the Yumepa pass?

Every plan includes Yumepa, a pass for all six of Kinosaki’s public bathhouses, valid from check-in to 13:00 the next day. The nearest, Mandara-yu, is about 70 m away, and Kou-no-yu and Gosho-no-yu are a few minutes on foot. Each bathhouse has its own hours and closing day; see our Nishimuraya Honkan guide for how the bath crawl works in Kinosaki.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos. The private baths are used alone, but ask the inn before you book; the public bathhouses have their own rules. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Meals at Tsuchiya Ryokan

What is dinner like?

Dinner is served in the dining room on the 1st or 2nd floor, surrounded by the inn’s art, and starts at 18:00 for all guests; you can keep your table until about 20:00, and seats are assigned. The AYA plan is 8 courses and MIYABI, with Tajima beef and seasonal fish, 10 courses. In winter, the crab plans use only live crab.

What are the breakfast options?

Choose a Japanese breakfast of San’in ingredients in the dining room, at 8:00 or 8:30, or a toast breakfast at the UTSUROI café across the street from 8:00 to 9:30, with about 20 drinks to pick from.
