Sapporo Grand Hotel opened in December 1934 as Hokkaido’s first full-scale Western hotel and still sits where it started, a block north of Odori Park with a door onto the Chi-Ka-Ho underground walkway that runs from Sapporo Station. Its Japanese FAQ is long and specific, and it holds the rules that decide a winter stay: check-in 15:00, checkout 11:00, cancellation free until 8 days before, preschoolers free in a parent’s bed, a 1,600-yen crib and 3,600-yen extra bed, a call required if you arrive after midnight, and side entrances that close at night while the main door stays open.
Everything below is from the hotel’s official Japanese site: the FAQ and the access information. Room rates are not here; the fees, hours and rules the hotel prints are.

What is Sapporo Grand Hotel, and which building should I book?

Three connected buildings at Kita 1-jo Nishi 4-chome: the Main Building with the 24-hour front desk and the historic Grand in Grand and Executive floors, the East Wing with the Comfort floors, connecting rooms and the buffet restaurant, and the Annex. Room types run from singles through a long list of doubles and twins, including Hollywood twins and a Japanese-living-room twin, to junior, standard and super suites; the FAQ counts 439 non-smoking rooms. Every room has a washlet toilet, a humidifying air purifier, free Wi-Fi and free room-temperature mineral water from Kuromatsunai in Hokkaido; minibars are empty in standard rooms, paid in suites and free on the Grand in Grand floor. Shower booths exist in two Grand in Grand suites and three Comfort-floor rooms. Our Sapporo map shows the hotel between the station and Odori.
Which room categories exist?
Four tiers. Grand in Grand and Executive on the Main Building’s upper floors, with an executive lounge and free beer and soft drinks in the minibar; Comfort on floors 11 to 16 of the East Wing, the newer rooms; Grand Classic, the historic rooms of the original building; and Standard, from singles to the East Wing corner twins and a twin with a Japanese living space. Universal-design rooms and the family room are in the East Wing. Requests for a specific category go through the reservations desk, and upgrades are priced at the front desk by plan and room type.
What is in the room?
Bath, face and hand towels, hand and body soap, shampoo and conditioner, slippers, a hairbrush, toothbrushes, razors, a shower cap, cotton swabs, a hair dryer, green and roasted tea bags and relaxation wear, plus a humidifying air purifier and free mineral water. Anything else on the lending list, from a curling dryer to women’s skincare, comes on request while stocks last.
Is it really connected to the underground walkway?
Yes. The hotel has its own door onto the Sapporo Ekimae-dori underground walkway, the Chi-Ka-Ho, which runs from JR Sapporo Station to Odori, so in a January blizzard you can walk from the train to the lobby without a coat. The hotel puts the station at about 10 minutes and Odori Park at about 5. That underground door closes from midnight to 6:00; the main entrance on the north side of the Main Building never closes. For the February festival, our Sapporo Snow Festival guide explains why a hotel on this walkway matters.
Check-in at 15:00, checkout at 11:00, and the midnight call

What if I arrive late?
The hotel is open 24 hours with no curfew. The FAQ says arriving after your stated time is not a problem, but if you will arrive after midnight the hotel asks you to call ahead. The accommodation contract is worded differently: its no-show clause lists 15:00, or six hours after your stated arrival time, after which a guest who has not arrived or made contact may be treated as having canceled. The wording is unusual, so give the hotel a realistic arrival time and call if you are running late. Use the Main Building’s north entrance late at night: the East Wing door is closed from 0:00 to 6:00, the Annex door from 23:00 to 6:00 and the walkway door from 24:00 to 6:00.
Can I stay past 11:00?
On request: one third of the list room rate to stay up to three hours past 11:00, half for up to six hours, and the full rate beyond that. Luggage is held at the first-floor cloakroom before check-in and after checkout, and parcels sent ahead go to the bell counter with the guest’s full name and stay dates.
Should I book direct?
The hotel says rates on its own site are 10 percent lower than on other booking sites, takes reservations a year ahead, and credits ANA miles only. Guests who paid online by card through the hotel’s JTB Book & Pay system print their own receipt from that system rather than at checkout.
Cancellation: free until 8 days before
| When you cancel (direct bookings) | Fee |
|---|---|
| Up to 8 days before | No charge |
| 7 days before | 20% |
| 3 days before | 50% |
| The day before | 80% |
| On the day / no-show | 100% |
This is the scale for bookings made with the hotel; the FAQ points to the accommodation contract for the detail, and a booking through another site follows that site’s terms. The 8-day free window is longer than the two-day standard at many city hotels, which suits ski trips planned around snow reports; our Niseko ski guide and Ki Niseko guide show how much stricter the resort hotels are.
Children: preschoolers free, cribs 1,600 yen

Preschool children sharing a bed stay free. In a twin room the hotel pushes one bed flush against the wall so the child sleeps on the wall side, and lends a bed guard free (129 by 44 by 44 cm, for about 18 months to 5 years) if you ask the reservations desk in advance. A crib for ages 0 to 2 costs 1,600 yen a night (80 by 130 cm) and cannot be placed in every room type; an extra bed is 3,600 yen, tax and service included, subject to room type. The family room has four beds and takes five people when one is a bed-sharing preschooler, and the East Wing’s connecting room joins a 40-square-meter and a 30-square-meter room for up to five.
What is lent for small children and expectant mothers?
Free and limited: a two-way high chair for 7 months to 5 years, an infant bath chair and mat, a Kids Land play set for 6 months to 3.5 years in rooms of 62 square meters or more, a diaper bin, children’s amenity sets and disposable slippers, and a maternity kit of body pillow, support belt, pajamas and leg supports. The wider lending list runs from buckwheat pillows and feather-free duvets to irons, Blu-ray players, plug adapters, thermometers, scales, umbrellas, go and shogi sets, tabletop games and yoga mats.
Breakfast, room service and the small print

Where is breakfast?
The Western and Japanese buffet is at Northern Terrace Diner on the first floor of the East Wing, 6:30 to 10:00 every day, with American and continental breakfasts until 10:30 last order; the Japanese set breakfast is at Garden Dining Kanraku on the fourth floor of the Main Building, 7:00 to 10:00 last order. Room service brings breakfast 7:00 to 10:00 and dinner, snacks and drinks 17:00 to 23:00. Every restaurant takes wheelchairs, with a lift at the stairs into the Big Jockey Hokkaido dining room.
Can I book a restaurant table, and with a wheelchair?
Restaurant reservations are taken by phone (9:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday, to 17:00 on Sundays and holidays) and online, and every restaurant accepts wheelchairs: Northern Terrace Diner is step-free, and where there are stairs, as at Big Jockey, a wheelchair lift and staff assistance are provided. Private rooms exist at several venues. In-room aroma treatments and massages are booked directly with the outside providers named in the FAQ, not through the front desk, except the massage service, which the front desk arranges.
Cakes, massages and laundry
Decorated cakes for the room cost 4,889 yen (13 cm), 5,500 yen (16 cm) or 6,111 yen (19 cm) with three days’ notice, and flowers and wine can be ordered. In-room aroma treatments run 19:00 to 4:00 from 11,000 yen for 60 minutes, and in-room massage 15:00 to midnight at 5,500 yen for 40 minutes, both by outside providers. Laundry is paid, with same-day service for items handed in by 11:00 Monday to Saturday or 10:00 on holidays, and none on Sundays. A laptop rents for 1,100 yen a night and an Airweave mattress topper for the same.
Parking and currency
The hotel’s own multi-story garage is on its west side, open 7:00 to 23:00 every day; hotel guests pay 2,500 yen a night for a car, or 3,500 yen for a vehicle 1,850 mm wide or more, which goes in the flat lot. A 24-hour exchange machine by the front desk changes US dollars, euros, Hong Kong and Singapore dollars, Thai baht, Chinese yuan, Taiwan dollars and Korean won into yen, one direction only.
A practical winter arrival
Take the train to Sapporo, go down into the Chi-Ka-Ho walkway rather than out onto the street, and follow it south toward Odori; the hotel’s own door is on the walkway, about 10 minutes from the station by the hotel’s estimate. If the train lands after midnight, the walkway door is shut, so surface at the nearest exit and walk to the Main Building’s north entrance, and remember the hotel wants a call for arrivals that late. Drivers should note the garage closes at 23:00 and opens at 7:00, which matters for an early flight, and that the fee is published on the hotel’s parking page rather than in its FAQ.
Who Sapporo Grand Hotel is for
Travelers who want a large, central, old-line hotel with an indoor route from the station, a long free cancellation window and a lending closet built for families. For the slopes, our Japan skiing guide covers the buses from Sapporo to Niseko, and Japan in November explains when Hokkaido’s first snow usually arrives.
(How this compares: our hotel extra bed fees table of 21 hotels with a fixed fee has a median of 5,000 yen, and lists Sapporo Grand Hotel at 1,600 yen for a crib and 3,600 yen for an extra bed.)
