Hotel New Otani Tokyo (2026): Cancel Fees, Kids Free, Garden

Guide·September 22, 2026·20 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Hotel New Otani Tokyo is the 1964 Olympics hotel on the hill between Akasaka-mitsuke and Nagatacho, three buildings (the Main building, the Garden Tower and the Garden Court) around a 400-year-old Japanese garden that anyone can walk into for free. It is one of the most-booked big hotels in Tokyo, and its English FAQ is unusually complete, which makes the rules easy to check before you commit: check-in 15:00, checkout at noon, cancellation fees from two days out, children 12 and under free in two of the three buildings but 9,000 yen a night in Executive House ZEN, a pool that costs 6,000 yen because it belongs to a members’ club, and a late-arrival rule that can cancel a booking if you do not call ahead (the FAQ says midnight; the hotel’s terms of stay say 20:00).

Everything below is from the hotel’s official English site: the accommodation FAQ, the access page and the Japanese garden page. Room rates are not here; the fees, hours and rules the hotel prints are.

Honto check: Every rule and figure on this page is from Hotel New Otani Tokyo’s official English site (newotani.co.jp), read on September 18, 2026. Deliberately not stated: room rates; the summer outdoor pool’s fee and dates, whose page we could not open; and the accommodation contract’s wording beyond its no-show clause (quoted from the Japanese terms of stay), so the cancellation and late-checkout figures here are the FAQ’s.

What is Hotel New Otani Tokyo, and which building should I book?

Three buildings share the garden. The Main building is the 1964 original with the round rooftop restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, the business center and the day nursery; its front desk is where you check in at any hour. The Garden Tower (1974) is the 40-story tower with the buffet restaurant on the 40th floor and a front desk open 8:00 to 22:00. Executive House ZEN is the hotel-within-a-hotel on the Garden Tower’s upper floors with its own lounge and its own child policy, described below. Two Japanese-style suites with tatami exist in the Main building; ask early because they are limited.

Which entrance is open at night?

The Main building’s lobby-floor entrance and the Garden Court entrance never close. The banquet-floor entrance is open 5:00 to midnight, the Kioizaka entrance 8:30 to midnight (22:00 on Sundays) and the Garden Tower entrance 6:00 to midnight. Arriving at 1:00, head for the Main building lobby.

Check-in at 15:00, the midnight rule, and late checkout

What happens if my flight lands late?

Check-in is from 15:00 and available around the clock, and the FAQ asks you to inform the hotel if you will arrive after midnight, because a booking may be canceled if you have not arrived by 0:00 without prior notice. The hotel’s terms of stay draw the line earlier: if you have not arrived or contacted the hotel by 20:00 on the day (or two hours after an arrival time you gave), the booking may be treated as canceled. A late Haneda arrival is fine; a silent one is not.

Can I check out late, or check in early?

Late checkout is on request, subject to the room being free: 30 percent of the normal room charge to stay until 15:00, 50 percent until 18:00 and 100 percent after 18:00. Early check-in is also on request; the FAQ gives no fixed price for it. Bags can be left at the bell desk before check-in and after checkout, and luggage can be shipped ahead to the front desk with your name and arrival date on the waybill, shipping prepaid; the hotel will not hold valuables or cash-on-delivery parcels.

Can my travel companion check in first?

Yes, if you give the hotel their name in advance, but the person checking in first must show a valid credit card or leave a deposit of 200 percent of the total charge. A minor traveling without an adult can stay only with a signed parental consent form, downloaded from the site, presented at arrival.

The FAQ notes that some packages and rates carry different charges and points to the accommodation contract for details. One rule trips up a lot of visitors: a booking made through a travel agency or an online booking site cannot be canceled by calling the hotel. You cancel where you booked, on that site’s terms.

Children: free in two buildings, 9,000 yen in the third

In the Main building and Garden Tower, a child aged 12 or under stays free if they do not need their own bed, one child per adult. On packages that include breakfast or other extras, the free child’s breakfast is charged separately. Extra beds are available for a fee in most but not all room types; ask Room Reservations when you book.

Why is Executive House ZEN different?

ZEN counts its lounge food and drink into the room, so the child rule changes: children 3 and under are free, children 4 to 12 sharing a bed pay 9,000 yen per night (6,000 yen for New Otani Club members), tax and service included, with at most two bed-sharing children per room when two adults stay. The ZEN Lounge’s complimentary light meals and drinks, including breakfast, are open to those children. There are no extra beds in ZEN at all.

What is provided for babies?

A baby cot for infants up to 18 months (watch children who can pull themselves up to stand), bed rails for ages 18 to 60 months, children’s yukata in sizes S (about 110 cm) and M (about 130 cm), 21 cm slippers, a toothbrush, diaper pail, thermometer, baby toilet seat, step stool, picture books and a DVD or Blu-ray player, all on request through Room Reservations. Room Service will microwave store-bought baby food, and the in-room kettle and complimentary bottled water cover formula. There are no rental strollers and no play area. A day nursery on the third floor of the Main building takes reservations through the concierge (8:00 to 18:00), and the nursing room in front of banquet room Fuyo is open 8:00 to 21:00 with a hot-water dispenser, couch, sink and changing table. Diapers, wipes and formula are sold at the Kaizosha drugstore (Main building lobby, 10:00 to 18:00) and the FamilyMart in the Garden Court (7:00 to 23:00).

Which restaurants have highchairs?

Highchairs and children’s menus at VIEW & DINING THE SKY, Bella Vista, Tower Restaurant, Taikan En, Senbazuru, Kato’s Dining & Bar (reservation required) and Satsuki; children’s items at the noodle restaurant Nakajima; highchairs only at the Rib Room and Garden Lounge. Strollers are allowed in all restaurants without age limits, and all of them can seat wheelchairs.

The garden, the pool and the gym

The Garden Tower of Hotel New Otani Tokyo
The 40-story Garden Tower, built in 1974 along with the garden’s six-meter waterfall. Its workout room is on the 21st floor.

Is the Japanese garden free?

Yes, and it is the hotel’s best-known feature: open to guests and visitors every day from 6:00 to 22:00, no ticket, ranked among TripAdvisor’s best free attractions in Japan four years running. The roughly 10-acre garden has passed through the hands of samurai lord Kato Kiyomasa, the Ii family and the Fushiminomiya branch of the imperial house before hotel founder Yonetaro Otani built the hotel on it for the 1964 Olympics. The six-meter waterfall dates from the 1974 Garden Tower construction, and the grounds are illuminated from 30 minutes before sunset until 2:00 every night, with themed lighting for the hotel’s anniversaries. The kaiseki restaurant Sazanka-so in the middle of the garden is the founder’s former residence.

Why does the pool cost money?

The workout rooms (Main building third floor, Garden Tower 21st floor) are free for staying guests. The gym, pool and sauna belong to the Golden Spa New Otani, a members-only sports club inside the hotel, so hotel guests pay a visitor fee of 6,000 yen plus tax per use (5,000 yen for New Otani Club members). An outdoor pool opens in summer; its page did not load for us, so check dates and fees with the hotel.

Getting there, parking and paying

Which station and exit?

Akasaka-mitsuke (Ginza and Marunouchi lines), exit D, about 3 minutes, is the one to use with a stroller, wheelchair or big suitcase. Nagatacho (Hanzomon and Namboku lines) exit 7 is also 3 minutes but the route has many stairs. Kojimachi on the Yurakucho line is 6 minutes, and JR Yotsuya on the Chuo and Sobu lines about 8, which is the station to use from Narita: Narita Express to Tokyo, then the Chuo line to Yotsuya. Taxis from Tokyo Station run about 20 minutes and 1,500 yen, from Shinagawa 25 minutes and about 3,000 yen, and to Tokyo Disney Resort about 40 minutes and 8,000 yen, all approximate.

How do I get there from Haneda?

By train: Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho (30 minutes), JR to Shimbashi (2 minutes), Ginza line to Akasaka-mitsuke (5 minutes), then a 3-minute walk; or Keikyu through to the Asakusa line and change at Shimbashi. The airport limousine bus (1,400 yen, 90 to 110 minutes) is suspended and resumes on October 1, 2026. A taxi is 40 to 50 minutes and about 9,000 yen; the hotel’s hired limousine is 40,000 yen one way with a 100 percent cancellation charge from 17:00 two days before. Our Haneda to central Tokyo guide compares the options.

Is parking free for guests?

The hotel has 760 spaces at 500 yen per 30 minutes. The access page states that the fee is waived for staying guests; the FAQ says vouchers are issued to staying guests and diners. Either way you should pay nothing for the night, but get the voucher or validation at the front desk rather than assuming the gate knows.

Payment, gifts and the small print

Gift checks of 5,000 and 10,000 yen are sold at the front desk and cover rooms and meals at New Otani hotels, and you can prepay a friend’s stay by domestic bank transfer or in person before they check in. Flowers (from 5,500 yen) or a whole cake (from 3,850 yen) can be placed in a room with three days’ notice, service charge extra. Pets are not accepted and there is no pet-sitting. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco in a non-smoking room bring a penalty charge; smoking rooms can be requested for most room types. Wi-Fi is free, room service runs 6:00 to midnight, and the in-room bottled water is complimentary (extra bottles are charged).

Where is breakfast?

Buffets at Satsuki (Main building lobby floor), the Garden Lounge (Garden Tower lobby floor) and the Tower Restaurant on the Garden Tower’s 40th floor, a Japanese set breakfast at Kioi Nadaman, or room service. Remember that a free bed-sharing child’s breakfast is charged even on a breakfast-inclusive plan.

Who Hotel New Otani Tokyo is for

Families and first-timers who want a large, English-fluent hotel with a garden, three subway lines within three minutes and 24-hour check-in, and who do not mind that the pool costs extra. Our family hotels guide puts it next to the Disney-area hotels, the luxury hotels roundup and where-to-stay guide compare the neighborhoods, and if a garden is the point, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo keeps its garden for guests only while the Imperial Hotel trades the garden for Hibiya Park across the road.

(How this compares: our parking fees table of 41 Japanese hotels counts Hotel New Otani Tokyo among the five where staying guests park free.)

(Traveling with teenagers: our under-18 hotel stays comparison covers 29 hotels and chains and notes that Hotel New Otani Tokyo posts one consent form in Japanese and English.)

Frequently asked questions

What time is check-in and check-out at Hotel New Otani Tokyo?
Check-in from 15:00 and checkout at 12:00 noon unless your package says otherwise. The Main building front desk is open around the clock, so you can check in at any hour, but tell the hotel if you will arrive after midnight: without notice, a booking can be canceled if you have not arrived by midnight, and the terms of stay let the hotel treat a booking as canceled if you have not arrived or made contact by 20:00 (or two hours after your stated arrival time). Late checkout costs 30 percent of the room charge until 15:00, 50 percent until 18:00 and 100 percent after that, subject to availability.
What is the cancellation policy?
10 percent if you cancel two days before arrival, 20 percent the day before, 80 percent on the day, and 100 percent for a no-show; some packages differ. Bookings made through travel agencies or online booking sites cannot be canceled by calling the hotel; you must cancel where you booked.
Do children stay free?
In the Main building and Garden Tower, children aged 12 and under stay free if they do not need their own bed, one child per adult; breakfast and other items included in a package are charged extra for them. Extra beds cost extra and are not available in every room type. Executive House ZEN is different: children 3 and under are free, children 4 to 12 sharing a bed pay 9,000 yen per night (6,000 yen for New Otani Club members), at most two per room, and there are no extra beds.
What does the hotel lend for babies and small children?
A baby cot for infants up to 18 months, bed rails for ages 18 to 60 months, children’s yukata in two sizes, small slippers, a diaper pail, thermometer, toilet seat, step stool, picture books and a DVD or Blu-ray player, all on request and subject to availability. There are no rental strollers and no play area. A day nursery on the third floor of the Main building takes advance reservations, and a nursing room on the banquet floor is open 8:00 to 21:00.
Is the Japanese garden free, and can non-guests visit?
Yes. The garden is open to guests and visitors every day from 6:00 to 22:00 with no admission charge, and it is lit from 30 minutes before sunset until 2:00. It covers about 10 acres, has a history of more than 400 years, and includes a six-meter waterfall built in 1974.
Is there a pool or gym?
Workout rooms on the third floor of the Main building and the 21st floor of the Garden Tower are free for staying guests. The gym, pool and sauna belong to the members-only Golden Spa New Otani, which hotel guests can use for a 6,000 yen visitor fee plus tax (5,000 yen for New Otani Club members). An outdoor pool opens in summer.
How much is parking, and how do I get there?
The hotel has 760 parking spaces at 500 yen per 30 minutes; the access page says the fee is waived for staying guests and the FAQ says guests receive vouchers, so confirm at the front desk. The nearest stations are Akasaka-mitsuke (exit D, 3 minutes) and Nagatacho (exit 7, 3 minutes, many stairs); Kojimachi is 6 minutes and Yotsuya 8. From Haneda, the airport limousine bus (1,400 yen) is suspended until October 1, 2026; the train route is the monorail to Hamamatsucho, JR to Shimbashi and the Ginza line to Akasaka-mitsuke.
Can someone else check in before me, and can a teenager stay alone?
Yes to both, with conditions. A companion checking in before the person who booked must either show a valid credit card or leave a deposit equal to 200 percent of the reservation. A minor staying without an adult needs a consent form signed by a parent or guardian, downloaded from the hotel’s site and presented at arrival with the guardian’s contact details.

Bottom line (2026). Check in from 15:00, out by noon, and call ahead if you will arrive late: the FAQ says after midnight, the terms of stay 20:00. Cancellation is 10 / 20 / 80 / 100 percent from two days out. Children 12 and under share a bed free in the Main building and Garden Tower; in Executive House ZEN ages 4 to 12 pay 9,000 yen. The garden is free for everyone, 6:00 to 22:00; the pool is 6,000 yen. Parking is 500 yen per 30 minutes but waived for guests. As of September 18, 2026.
