Hotel Monterey is the mid-price Japanese chain with a European costume: a Viennese palace in Osaka, an English townhouse in Akasaka, a British-colonial resort on the Okinawa coast, and a chapel in most of them. The rules under the costume are worth knowing before you book. The group added an 18 percent service charge in April 2025, its cancellation fees start a week before arrival, a guest who has not shown up by 22:00 can be treated as canceled, and the baths in Kyoto and Fukuoka refuse tattoos outright.
Everything below comes from the official English terms, the group notices, and the room pages of seven hotels we opened. Room rates are not here; official breakfast, parking and tax figures are, because the hotels publish them.

What is Hotel Monterey, and which hotel is which?
Hotel Monterey Co. runs 21 hotels under three names. Hotel Monterey is the main line, each built around a European theme; Hotel Monterey La Soeur is the smaller, wedding-leaning sister in Ginza, Osaka, Fukuoka and, from April 3, 2026, Naha; and Hotel Monte Hermana is the plainer business line in Tokyo, Sendai, Kobe and Fukuoka. The cities are Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji, Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Okinawa.
Which one has the hot spring?
Two of the hotels we checked have a bath. Hotel Monterey Kyoto has Spa Trinity on the 13th floor, fed by water pumped from 1,000 meters under the city. Hotel Monterey Fukuoka has a third-floor public bath and sauna, dry for men and mist for women. The Okinawa resort has a natural hot spring inside its Blue Reef spa area with an indoor pool and gym. Ginza, Akasaka, Osaka and Sapporo list no public bath on their room pages.
How big are they?
City-hotel size: Ginza 224 rooms, Akasaka 196, Osaka 194, Kyoto 327, Fukuoka 302, Edelhof Sapporo 300 with a south wing opened in March 2022, and Okinawa 339 rooms, all of them ocean-facing on floors 3 to 12. Every hotel page we read says all rooms are non-smoking, with free Wi-Fi, bath amenities and pajamas.
What is the security system?
A card key that doubles as a floor pass. In Ginza, Akasaka and Sapporo the elevator stops only at your floor after you tap the key; in Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka each floor has a security door opened by the key. Kyoto also has a ladies-only 12th floor. The house rules ask you to leave the key at the front desk when you go out and to show your key card to get it back.
Check-in at 15:00, and the 22:00 rule
What time is check-in and check-out?
15:00 and 11:00, identical at all seven hotels we opened. The terms let the hotel extend occupancy at its discretion but do not promise it or price it.
What happens if I arrive late?
Article 7 of the terms: if you have not appeared by 22:00 on the arrival date without advance notice, or by two hours after the arrival time you gave, the hotel may regard the contract as canceled by you. A late flight into Haneda or Kansai can pass 22:00 easily, so put a realistic arrival time on the booking or call ahead. The front desk itself is 24 hours under the terms, though the Fukuoka page adds that its entrance locks after midnight and you use your card key or the intercom.
What do I have to give at registration?
Name, age, sex, address and occupation; non-Japanese guests also give nationality, passport number and the port and date of entry, and the terms state that a photocopy of your passport is taken at check-in. If you plan to pay by card, coupon or traveler’s check, you show it at registration.

How does this compare with other chains?
It is one of the earlier-starting ladders among Japanese chains. Mitsui Garden Hotels starts at 20 percent three days out; Super Hotel charges nothing until the day itself for small bookings; Dormy Inn is somewhere between. If your dates are soft, a Monterey booking made through a site with free cancellation is worth the check.
Is there a deposit?
The terms allow the hotel to ask for a deposit up to the basic charge for the stay by a set date, and to void the booking if it is not paid; in practice many bookings run under the “no deposit” special contract the terms also describe. Payment is otherwise at the desk when you leave, in yen or by a card the hotel accepts.
The 18 percent service charge and the city taxes
What is the service charge?
An 18 percent charge added to accommodation, restaurant, banquet and spa bills at every hotel in the group, raised from 15 percent on April 1, 2025 and announced on March 1, 2025. If a booking site shows a room price, check whether service is already inside it; the group’s own best-rate guarantee compares only like with like.
What is the Tokyo accommodation tax line on my bill?
Since January 1, 2024 the five Tokyo hotels (Ginza, La Soeur Ginza, Hanzomon, Akasaka and Monte Hermana Tokyo) collect the metropolitan tax separately instead of folding it into the room price. It is per person per night on the room-only rate: nothing under 10,000 yen, 100 yen from 10,000 to under 15,000 yen, 200 yen at 15,000 yen and above.
What changes in Okinawa in 2027?
Okinawa Prefecture starts its own accommodation tax for stays from February 1, 2027: 2 percent of the room rate per person per night, capped at 2,000 yen, on the room and related service charge, not on meals. The resort’s notice of September 14, 2026 warns that booking sites do not yet show it and that it applies to every stay from that date regardless of when you booked.
How does the best-rate guarantee work?
Book on the official English site, find a lower publicly available rate with identical conditions within 24 hours, and send the URL, room type, dates and your confirmation number through the inquiry form; the hotel matches it. Opaque sites, packages, prepaid voucher rates and currency rounding are excluded, and the room must still be bookable when they check.

Can they handle a food allergy?
Reported at booking, yes within limits: the kitchen will remove or substitute an allergen in the main ingredients where it can, but the group’s policy states that nine designated allergens (shrimp, crab, walnuts, wheat, buckwheat, eggs, milk, peanuts, cashews) share one kitchen and equipment, so cross-contact cannot be ruled out. Guests with a history of anaphylaxis or an EpiPen prescription are asked, as a rule, to refrain from the restaurants and the breakfast buffet. Same-day changes can be charged.
Can I ask for halal, vegan or other substitutions?
Not under this policy. It says substitutions requested for preference, dietary or religious reasons are not accommodated as a rule; the allergy service exists only to prevent medical harm. Buffet items carry allergen pictograms for the nine designated ingredients, which is the practical tool for anyone reading labels.
The baths: Kyoto’s spa, Fukuoka’s sauna, and the tattoo rule
Can I use the Kyoto hot spring?
Since October 1, 2024, Spa Trinity has been open to every guest staying at Hotel Monterey Kyoto. Hours are 12:00 to 23:00 (last entry 22:00) and a morning bath 6:00 to 9:00 (last entry 8:30), with a lounge to 22:30, a ladies-only hot-stone room from 13:00 and massage from 13:00. Towels are provided and you may arrive in the hotel pajamas and slippers. The page lists closure days by month, so check it for your date.
Who is turned away?
Anyone with a tattoo or body paint, with no cover-up exception; anyone heavily drunk; children under three or not yet toilet-trained. Under Kyoto City rules a child aged seven or over may not enter the opposite-sex bath, and junior-high age and younger must be with a guardian. What about Fukuoka?
The third-floor bath and sauna “Trinite” is free for hotel guests and closed to outsiders, open 15:00 to 24:00 (last entry 23:00) and 6:00 to 11:00 (last entry 10:00). Tattoos are not permitted and infants in diapers are not admitted. Bring the towels from your room; the bath supplies only small items like razors, one per person. Fukuoka also has a 24-hour laundry on the same floor: 300 yen a wash, 100 yen per 30 minutes of drying.
House rules that catch visitors
Can I iron in the room or order delivery?
No and no. The Rules on Utilization forbid ironing in the guest room and any heater or cooking device not supplied by the hotel, and say not to order meals from outside or bring in food and drink unless the hotel has authorized it. Pajamas, bathrobe and slippers stay inside the room, which is stricter than the Japanese business chains that let you pad to the bath in them; Kyoto’s spa is the stated exception.
Can children stay, and is there a crib?
The booking form counts adults as six and older and children as under six. Minors need a parent’s or guardian’s consent to stay. Akasaka says baby cribs are free, though not in every room type; ask each hotel. Okinawa prices breakfast by age from three, which is the only child-specific figure the pages give.
What about valuables and lost property?
Cash and valuables go in the free safe-deposit box at the cashier; anything not deposited and not declared is covered only up to 150,000 yen. Items left behind are kept for two months under the house rules, or seven days under the accommodation terms before going to the police, so call quickly.
Closures to know about in early 2027
Hotel Monterey Kyoto closes from January 3 to January 31, 2027 to replace its air-conditioning ahead of its 20th anniversary, reopening February 1; the notice went up on September 11, 2026. Hotel Monterey Okinawa Spa & Resort closes from 12:00 on January 6 to 14:00 on January 7, 2027 for its annual electrical inspection, with check-in resuming at 15:00 on the 7th. The Okinawa “Luxury” room category becomes “Garden Deluxe” from April 2027.
Who Hotel Monterey is for
A traveler who wants a themed, slightly formal city hotel with a breakfast room and a chapel in the lobby, and who has firm dates. It is a poor fit for last-minute plans, for tattooed bathers in Kyoto and Fukuoka, and for anyone who expects the price on a booking site to be the price on the bill. Expect an 18 percent service charge and, in Tokyo, a separate 100 or 200 yen city tax; cancel more than seven days out to pay nothing at a standard hotel, more than 14 days in Okinawa; be there by 22:00 or call; skip the Kyoto and Fukuoka baths if you have a tattoo; and do not book Kyoto for January 2027, when the hotel is shut.
