Gion Shinmonso Kyoto · Baths, Maiko Dinner
Guide·November 6, 2026·10 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Gion Shinmonso is a 21-room ryokan beside the Shirakawa River in Gion, Kyoto, that began as a ryori ryokan, an inn known first for its food. Before you book, three things matter: the baths are shared, and some rooms have no shower of their own; dinner is planned around each guest, so the inn asks about you before you arrive; and there is no parking, so come on foot or by taxi.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Gion Shinmonso’s official pages in Japanese and English and its official booking page, plus the City of Kyoto’s tax page, read on October 20, 2026. We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: whether the bath is a hot spring, the tattoo rule, the cancellation rule for stays, children’s ages and rates, card brands, a curfew, and the nearest station, none of which the pages we could read give. Where the pages differ, we leave the detail out.

What is dinner like?

The inn says it puts its effort into Japanese cuisine from the ingredients up. Before your stay, on the day or the day before, it learns your age, who you are and why you are traveling, and shapes the dinner to suit you. Dishes are served on antiques such as Old Imari and Old Noritake, alongside modern Baccarat. The official pages do not say where dinner is served or give a set menu.

Where is breakfast served?

Breakfast for staying guests is in Shion, a hall of 57 tatami mats that also hosts banquets of up to 60 people.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

There is no page on allergies. The inn’s statement of principles says its staff will stay close to guests who have dietary restrictions, so write to the inn with the details before you book.

What is the maiko dinner?

The inn arranges dinners with a maiko (an apprentice geisha). The meal is a course of Hirai beef sukiyaki or shabu-shabu, served over about 120 minutes, and the maiko joins for about 90; music is from a CD. Prices include the service charge, with tax added, and depend on group size; see the official maiko page. A maiko lunch for groups of 20 or more is 9,900 yen per person including tax, from 11:30 to 13:00.

The bath at Gion Shinmonso

When is the bath open?

The large bath has one side for men and one for women, each for up to 20 people. It is open from 16:00 to 1:00 and again from 6:00 to 9:00. The official pages do not say whether the water is from a hot spring.

Do the rooms have their own bath?

Not all. The booking page notes that some room types have no shower room and that guests in those rooms use the large bath. One large room type has its own bath. Check the room description before you book.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos. Ask the inn before you book; our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.
