There is no single “Hello Kitty store” in Japan. There is a company, Sanrio, whose official locator lists 146 shops nationwide and 32 in Tokyo, in at least four formats: full Sanrio shops, department-store counters, the Hello Kitty Japan shops aimed at visitors, and cafes. They do not all do the same things. Only four Tokyo shops carry the tax-free flag on the official locator. One shop, Harajuku, is busy enough that Sanrio prints entry tickets for it in five languages, and the ticket dies if you are ten minutes late.
And there is a date to know. From October 8 to October 31, 2026, Sanrio is running a campaign for overseas tourists: one purchase of 11,000 yen or more at a participating shop, show the cover of a non-Japanese passport, and you get a reusable bag. The Harajuku store is not on the list.

Which Hello Kitty store should you actually go to?

For the visitor-format shop with tax-free: Shibuya or Odaiba
The two shops Sanrio names Hello Kitty Japan are the ones built for travelers, and both carry the Tax Free flag on the official locator. Hello Kitty Japan Shibuya sits on the ground floor of MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, directly opposite JR Shibuya Station, open 10:00 to 21:00 every day. Hello Kitty Japan DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is on the second floor of DiverCity in Odaiba, three minutes from Tokyo Teleport on the Rinkai line, with the longer weekend hours and a capsule-toy corner; the same floor has a sweets counter called HELLO KITTY no Kongariyaki that shares the shop’s phone number.
For the Takeshita-dori experience: Harajuku, with a ticket
The Sanrio Harajuku Store occupies the first two floors of Takeshita-dori Square at 1-16-4 Jingumae, with SANRIO CAFE Harajuku on the third. Hours are the shortest of the group, 11:00 to 19:00. It is the one shop for which Sanrio publishes an entry-ticket notice, which tells you what the queue is like. It is also the one central shop whose page shows no tax-free flag. If you are on Takeshita-dori anyway, go; if you are crossing the city for a tax-free haul, go to Shibuya.
For a quick stop on the way somewhere: Tokyo Station, Solamachi, Ginza
Sanrio Tokyo Character Street is inside First Avenue under Tokyo Station, 10:00 to 20:30, on the same strip as the Pokémon, Snoopy and Ghibli shops. Sanrio TOKYO Solamachi is on the fourth floor of the Skytree complex, 10:00 to 21:00. Sanrio NISHIGINZA is on the second floor of the Nishi Ginza Department Store by Yurakucho, 11:00 to 20:00. None of the three shows a tax-free flag on its page.
What about department-store counters?
Keio Shinjuku 7F, Takashimaya Shinjuku 9F, Tobu Ikebukuro 1F, Nihombashi Takashimaya 5F and others are listed as Sanrio counters inside department stores. The locator does not flag them tax-free because tax refunds there go through the department store’s own counter, not Sanrio’s. The rules for that are in our tax-free guide.

When are tickets used, and how do I get one?
Sanrio’s page prints the ticket’s terms and nothing else: no distribution time, no location, no statement of whether it is every day or only at peak. We are not going to fill that in. The practical reading is that the system exists because the shop fills, so arrive early, ask staff at the entrance, and treat the time on the ticket as a hard appointment.
Does the ticket reserve a product?
No, and the notice says so directly. It gets you through the door at a time slot. Limited items are sold to whoever is inside when they are on the shelf.

Sanrio Ikebukuro, Tobu Ikebukuro 1F, vivitix Sunshine City alpa, Sanrio Shinjuku at Kinokuniya, Keio Shinjuku 7F, Takashimaya Shinjuku 9F, Sanrio SHIBUYA109, Sanrio SHIBUYA MAGNET (from October 9 only), Sanrio NISHIGINZA, Nihombashi Takashimaya 5F, Sanrio Asakusa, Sanrio Ueno, Sanrio TOKYO Solamachi and Hello Kitty Japan DiverCity. Harajuku is not on the list.

Sapporo Apia; in Osaka the Hankyu Umeda 11F counter, Osaka Takashimaya 6F and Sanrio Gift Gate Namba Ebisubashi; in Kyoto Takashimaya Kyoto 5F and Sanrio Gallery Kyoto on Shijo; Kobe Harborland; and in Fukuoka Hakata Hankyu 7F, Sanrio Gallery Hakata in Canal City OPA and the Tenjin underground mall shop.
Is the bag worth planning around?
Only if you were going to spend 11,000 yen in one go anyway. The rule is per transaction, so splitting a family’s shopping across two receipts loses it. If you are already at that level, do it at one of the four tax-free shops and handle both at once.
Services the shop pages actually list
The Sanrio flagship at Nishi-Ginza, the largest of the shops, walked floor by floor; the tax-free counter and the character sections appear in the footage.
Can I buy Puroland tickets at the shop?
Yes. Every Tokyo shop page we opened shows a circle against “Dealing in Sanrio Puroland tickets”. The park is in Tama, well west of the center, and its own admission rules are in our Puroland tickets guide.
Gift wrapping, capsule toys, online pickup?
Varies. Harajuku and Nishi-Ginza list gift wrapping; DiverCity and Solamachi list capsule toys; Harajuku and Nishi-Ginza list in-store pickup for the official online shop while DiverCity, Shibuya, Solamachi and Tokyo Station do not. The locator shows a circle or a cross for each, so check the page for the shop you mean.
How do I pay?
The shop pages list Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club and UnionPay; transit IC cards; and QR payments including PayPay, Merpay, au Pay, d-Barai, WeChat Pay and Alipay. Several also list iD and QUICPay, and Tokyo Station adds Rakuten Pay and AEON Pay. Every page carries the same caveat: payment methods are subject to the shopping center’s system.
Is there a loyalty program for visitors?
Sanrio+ is the company’s app program and the shop pages list its services as available: points, shopping coupons, prize redemption and check-in. We have not tested it on a foreign account and are not describing the sign-up.
Beyond Tokyo: 146 shops, by prefecture
The official English locator groups shops by region and prefecture, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. If you are outside Tokyo, open the prefecture page rather than trusting a blog list: shops in this chain open, move and close, and the October campaign list above already shows how much the network reaches into Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Fukuoka and Sapporo.
Is there a Hello Kitty Japan shop outside Tokyo?
The two shops using that exact name on the locator are both in Tokyo. Elsewhere the formats are Sanrio shops, Sanrio Gift Gate, Sanrio Gallery and department-store counters. Same merchandise family, different sign.
Getting to the main Hello Kitty stores
From Shibuya Station
Hello Kitty Japan Shibuya is the easiest shop in the city to reach: the official page describes it as opposite JR Shibuya Station, on the ground floor of MAGNET. Sanrio SHIBUYA109 is on the sixth floor of the 109 building on Dogenzaka, a few minutes’ walk up from the scramble crossing. Between them you can do both tax-free shops in under half an hour.
From Harajuku Station
The Harajuku store is on Takeshita-dori itself, listed as accessible from JR Harajuku and from Meiji-jingumae on the Tokyo Metro. The street is a pedestrian crush on weekends, which is the context for the entry-ticket system; a weekday morning shortly after the 11:00 opening is the calmest version of the visit.
To Odaiba
Hello Kitty Japan DiverCity is a three-minute walk from Tokyo Teleport on the Rinkai line or five minutes from Daiba on the Yurikamome, per the official page. It is the one shop on this list that costs you a dedicated trip, so pair it with the rest of Odaiba rather than going for the shop alone.
Tokyo Station and Skytree
The Character Street shop is inside First Avenue Tokyo Station, on the Yaesu side underground, reachable without leaving the station complex. Solamachi is at the base of Tokyo Skytree, next to Oshiage and Tokyo Skytree stations on the Tobu, Metro, Toei and Keisei lines, on the fourth floor of the East Yard.
Which shop is open latest?
Hello Kitty Japan Shibuya and Solamachi, both to 21:00 every day, and DiverCity to 21:00 on weekends and holidays. Harajuku closes earliest at 19:00. If you are shopping after dinner, Shibuya is the answer.

Sanrio lists 146 shops in Japan and 32 in Tokyo, and only four Tokyo shops carry the tax-free flag: Hello Kitty Japan Shibuya, Hello Kitty Japan DiverCity, SHIBUYA109 and Lumine Est Shinjuku. The Harajuku store runs on entry tickets that die ten minutes after your slot, shows no tax-free flag, and is not in the October 8–31, 2026 tourist campaign, which gives a reusable bag for one purchase of 11,000 yen or more against a foreign passport cover.
