Buying figures in Japan is a skill sport, and Akihabara is the arena: ten-floor hobby towers, maker flagships, a used market with its own official grammar and lottery machines that always pay out something. The difference between a good haul and a great one is operational — knowing that stores open at ten, eleven and noon depending on the door, that "unopened" is a defined grade with a price, that the kuji bonus prize can't leave Japan, and that the entire tax-free system changes on November 1, 2026. Here's the circuit with every claim from official pages.

New figures: the maker flagships

What does each official store actually specialize in?
Kotobukiya's five-story house (Soto-Kanda 1-8-8, three minutes from the station) stacks official licensed shops on the ground floor — Monster Hunter's official hunter shop, Kyoto Animation, idol and game franchises — with the company's own plastic kingdom on 2F (Frame Arms, Megami Device, modeling supplies) and VTuber floors above, including the official Nijisanji shop. Tamashii Nations Store Tokyo (Kanda-Hanaokacho 1-1, 10:00–20:00) is Bandai Spirits' museum-shop hybrid for the die-cast and Figuarts lines — exhibition cases, store exclusives, and an official 15-and-up product policy that tells you the clientele. Volks Hobby Tengoku 2, the gold-clad tower at Soto-Kanda 4-2-10, runs seven floors from kits to dolls (11:00 weekdays / 10:00 weekends, to 20:00, no closing days) with tax-free service at the counter. AmiAmi's Radio Kaikan floor puts the famous web shop's name on physical shelves — new, used and cards — one elevator ride above the station. Where these sit on the map, block by block, is in our Akihabara map guide.
Used figures: reading Suruga-ya's official grammar

What do the condition labels legally promise?
The used market is where discontinued figures live, and Suruga-ya's official condition policy is the Rosetta stone: 「未開封品」(unopened) means shrink-wrapped or sealed such that it can't be restored once opened — tape-sealed boxes don't qualify; 「美品」(bihin) means opened but like-new; junk means officially no-claim, no-return; and the policy states that used items are, by definition, opened at buy-in for inspection. Damaged, B-rank and flagged items can't be returned or exchanged via the maker. The main store itself is the eight-story building at Soto-Kanda 3-11-3 on Junk Street (older articles still send people to its previous address), floors 5–6 are officially adults-only, and a dated heads-up: the 1st floor closes September 7–13, 2026 and reopens the 14th as a Pokemon-centered trading-card floor. For the other towers of the used trade, our Mandarake guide covers the eight-floor rival, and the wider shopping circuit maps everything between.
Prize figures: the arcade-and-kuji economy
Why is the same figure ¥800 in a crane game and ¥3,000 used?
A whole tier of figures never touches normal retail: prize figures made for crane games and lottery campaigns circulate only through arcades, kuji counters — and then the used market, which is where non-crane-players buy them. That's why Suruga-ya's shelves brim with boxed prize figures at fixed prices: someone else played the machine. Whether you hunt them at the claw (our arcade guide covers the machines and their rules) or buy them graded and boxed, know the tier: prize-figure sculpts are simpler than scale figures, priced accordingly, and honest fun at both prices.
Kuji, prizes and the November tax rewrite
Why can't the Double Chance prize go home with you?
Ichiban Kuji is the happiest gambling in retail — officially "a character lottery where you always win": pay, draw, take the prize tier on your ticket, and whoever draws the final ticket claims the Last One bonus. The official fine print that matters to visitors: the Double Chance campaign on the ticket stub ships prizes within Japan only and requires club membership — a domestic loyalty mechanism, not a tourist prize. Then the money: through October 31, 2026, tax-free works the familiar way (¥5,000 minimum per store per day, tax off at the register); from November 1, Japan switches to the refund model — pay tax-included, claim at customs within 90 days — and the official comparison sheet confirms the new system abolishes the goods categories, the ¥500,000 cap and the sealed bags. Simpler for figure crates, but the receipts become sacred. The change and its siblings live on our 2026 tracker.
