Uniqlo in Japan (2026): Tax-Free Rules, the 12-Floor Ginza Flagship, and Free Hemming’s Fine Print

Buying Uniqlo in Japan is a different product from buying it at home: deeper ranges, Japan-only collabs, flagship stores that are attractions in themselves — and, with the tax-free discount, meaningfully cheaper. But the machine runs on official rules that English guides consistently blur: a tax-free system with three separate disqualifiers, free hemming whose conditions change on September 1, 2026, and a returns policy that splits "exchange" from "refund" in a way that catches people at the register.

What kills a tax-free claim at the counter?

The threshold is the easy part: spend ¥5,500 tax-included (the official wording is "¥5,500 (¥5,000 before tax) or more") in one store on one day, with under-6-month visitor status. The disqualifiers are where hauls die at the counter, all from the official FAQ: ① some stores simply don't do tax-free — the official line is "some stores are excluded; check the store locator"; ② no combining receipts across different Uniqlo stores — the Ginza tower and UNIQLO TOKYO count separately; ③ your passport needs an entry stamp — the FAQ states that automated-gate arrivals without a stamp can't be processed, and the modern fix is showing a Visit Japan Web tax-free QR instead. Also officially excluded: online-store orders (even with store pickup) and the repair/embroidery services. Exported goods must leave Japan within six months. UNIQLO TOKYO vs the 12-floor tower

They're five minutes apart, so do both — but they're different animals. UNIQLO TOKYO (Marronnier Gate Ginza 2, floors 1–4, about 1,500 tsubo) is officially the brand's largest global flagship: the full men-women-kids-baby range, the LifeWear Square concept floor, a kids' play library — the comfortable, complete one. The Ginza store (Ginza Komatsu East Building) stacks roughly the same footprint into twelve narrow floors — the photogenic, vertiginous one. The services worth planning around

UTme! (Harajuku and select large stores): design a custom tee or tote on your phone, from ¥1,990 — with official store-exclusive local designs at the big branches. RE.UNIQLO STUDIO (18 stores including UNIQLO TOKYO, Ginza, Shinjuku Main and Asakusa): hole repairs from ¥500, template embroidery from ¥700, full custom from ¥7,500, sashiko stitching at three stores — and it officially accepts any Uniqlo item, including ones you bought at home years ago. Bringing an old Uniqlo jacket to Tokyo and flying home with it sashiko-repaired is about as Honto a souvenir as clothing gets. (Both services are tax-free-excluded, officially.)

Hemming, paying, returning: the register rules

The hemming clock is ticking

Free hemming is real but conditional — and the conditions change September 1, 2026: the free machine-stitch/cut-off line moves from pants priced ¥1,990+ to ¥2,990+, with blind-stitch finishing at ¥500–780. Machine finishes are same-day; blind-stitch is next-day-plus, which matters on a tight itinerary. The generous parts survive: any store hems any Uniqlo pants regardless of where or when bought (online orders included, no deadline), and re-hemming is free. Remember: hemmed items become non-returnable.

At the register

The official payment list runs cash, major cards, international debit, QUICPay, iD, transit ICs including Suica and Rakuten Edy — with one rule that ambushes American travelers: Amex works only if the card was issued in Japan, an official fraud-prevention policy. The RFID self-checkout (drop the basket in, watch it total instantly) is single-method cashless only — cash users need a staffed lane. And the returns split, one more time because it matters: exchanges at any store; refunds only where you bought it — tax-free purchases return only to the purchase store, passport in hand.

FAQ

Is Uniqlo tax-free in Japan?

At most stores, yes — with official conditions guides keep fudging. The threshold is ¥5,500 tax-included (¥5,000 before tax) in one store on one day; you need under-6-months status and a passport bearing an entry stamp (or a Visit Japan Web tax-free QR instead). Three official catches: some stores don’t offer tax-free at all (check the store locator), purchases can’t be combined across different Uniqlo stores, and — the big one — if you entered through an automated gate without getting a stamp, the official FAQ says no tax-free, full stop. Online orders and repair services are also excluded.

Which Uniqlo in Tokyo is worth visiting?

Two flagships, five minutes apart in Ginza. UNIQLO TOKYO (Marronnier Gate Ginza 2, floors 1–4, ~1,500 tsubo) is officially the largest global flagship — airy, full-range, with the LifeWear Square showcase and a kids’ library. The Uniqlo Ginza store (Ginza Komatsu East, 12 narrow floors) is the famous tower. Add the Harajuku store (WITH HARAJUKU) if UT graphic tees and the UTme! custom-shirt service are your thing. Current hours aren’t published in a machine-readable place — check the official store locator for your day.

Is hemming really free at Uniqlo Japan?

Conditionally — and the conditions change September 1, 2026. Until August 31: pants priced ¥1,990+ get free machine-stitch or cut-off hemming (blind-stitch costs extra). From September 1, the official free line rises to ¥2,990+, with blind-stitch at ¥500–780. Machine and cut-off finishes are same-day; blind-stitch is next-day or later. Two perks worth knowing: hemming works later at any store (even online purchases, no time limit), and re-hemming an already-altered item is officially free. One trade-off: hemmed items can’t be returned.

Can I use my Amex / Suica / self-checkout at Uniqlo?

Mostly yes, with one American-shaped exception: the official payment FAQ says Amex cards are accepted only if issued in Japan (a fraud-prevention rule) — bring a Visa or Mastercard as backup. Officially accepted: cash, major cards, international-brand debit, QUICPay, iD, transit ICs including Suica, and Rakuten Edy. The self-checkout machines (the RFID magic where the bin counts your basket instantly) take single-method cashless payment only — mixing cash means a staffed register. And if an old guide mentions UNIQLO Pay: officially discontinued.

Can I return or exchange Uniqlo items at any store?

Exchange yes, return no — the official split most guides miss. Within 30 days with receipt: exchanges work at any Uniqlo store in Japan, but refunds only at the exact store you bought from. Tax-free purchases are stricter: both exchanges and returns happen only at the purchase store, with the item, receipt and your passport. Hemmed, embroidered or repaired items are officially non-returnable. Practical rule: don’t buy tax-free at a store you can’t revisit.

What is RE.UNIQLO STUDIO?

Uniqlo’s official repair-and-remake counter — at 18 stores in Japan (including UNIQLO TOKYO, Ginza, Shinjuku and Asakusa), it repairs holes from ¥500, adds template embroidery from ¥700 (custom from ¥7,500), and at three stores offers sashiko stitching. It officially works on any Uniqlo item — including things you bought years ago at home — which makes it a genuinely original souvenir move: bring an old Uniqlo piece, leave with it embroidered. Note the services themselves are tax-free-excluded, and turnaround is same-day to next-day.

Are Uniqlo prices lower in Japan?

Usually meaningfully lower than US/EU retail for the same items, before the tax-free discount — but no official page publishes country comparisons, so we won’t fake numbers. What is official: Japan prices rose about 4% on average across July–August 2026, so the gap is narrower than older guides claim. The Japan-only draws are less about price anyway: deeper UT graphic-tee ranges, Japan-exclusive collabs, and the flagship services above.

Does the Uniqlo app work for tourists?

Partially. Registration needs just an email and verification code (no Japanese phone number is listed as required), and the new-download coupon — ¥500 off a ¥5,000+ purchase — officially works in physical stores. But the birthday coupon is online-store-only, and the online store itself ships domestically and is tax-free-excluded, so the app’s value for a visitor is mainly the download coupon and the member barcode at checkout. There’s no official ‘app-only pricing’ program, despite what some guides imply.

What’s new for Uniqlo in Japan in late 2026?

The headline: Kyoto gets its first global flagship — ‘UNIQLO Kyoto’ opens November 6, 2026 on Kawaramachi-dori, about 960 tsubo over four levels, per the official press release. Also official: the September 1 service-fee changes (hemming free-line to ¥2,990+, shipping to ¥550) and the ~4% average price increase that landed over summer.
