Kaede no Shoja Yufuin · Private Baths, Fees
Guide·October 14, 2026·9 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Kaede no Shoja is an inn in Yufuin, Oita, where every room is detached and has its own indoor bath, outdoor bath and stone sauna. It calls itself an inn for adults and was listed in the Michelin Guide Kumamoto and Oita 2018 special edition. Before you book, three things matter: both meals are served in your room; check-in is 16:00 to 18:00; and the shared private outdoor bath has been closed since 2021.

For the town itself, see our Yufuin guide; for a larger inn nearby, our guide to Kamenoi Bessou.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Kaede no Shoja’s official Japanese and English pages, its official booking page and Yufu City, read on October 12, 2026. We have not stayed there. Where the English pages disagree with the Japanese, we use the Japanese. Deliberately not stated: room sizes in square meters, the distance from Yufuin Station, the airport car fare, the tattoo rule and Oita’s planned accommodation tax band for this inn, none of which the official pages settle.

Rooms and baths at Kaede no Shoja

Which rooms are there?

The rooms are named after trees. Hiiragi and Tsubaki sit in the main house; Sakura and Katsura in the new wing have a private garden with a view of Mount Yufu; Muku is a maisonette with a garden, a dining table and a hanging chair on the upper terrace. Kozue has two semi-double beds and a Japanese room, and its bath looks out to Mount Yufu. Kunugi is for one guest aged 13 or over, with a glass roof and a new cypress outdoor bath. All rooms are non-smoking and have free Wi-Fi.

What else is there to bathe in?

Beyond the baths in every room, there is a footbath hut, Kaya. The shared private outdoor bath has been closed since May 5, 2021 for equipment checks; the English home page still invites guests to use it. The pages say nothing about tattoos.

Meals at Kaede no Shoja

Where and what will I eat?

Dinner and breakfast are both served in your room. Dinner is a kaiseki of Bungo Channel seafood, Bungo beef and Yufuin vegetables, changing monthly; the Matsu course adds Bungo beef and Seki horse mackerel sashimi. Breakfast is Japanese.

Can the inn handle allergies?

Tell the inn about food allergies before you arrive; it cannot handle them on the day. Guests on the dog-friendly plan eat in a separate dining building instead.

What extras does the inn offer?

Coffee and ice cream are free and self-service. The inn keeps bags before check-in and after checkout and lets you leave the car. Facial and body treatments or a massage start at 5,290 yen, and flowers or a cake can be ordered for a celebration.

Prices and rules at Kaede no Shoja

Per person, two sharing, with dinner and breakfast, the booking page starts at 34,100 yen, rising before holidays and to 57,200 yen and up over New Year. Kunugi, the solo room, starts at 37,400 yen. On top, Yufu City charges a bathing tax of 250 yen per adult per night; see our onsen bathing tax guide. The plans on sale when we checked list a booking window ending October 15, 2026, so prices may change.

What is the cancellation policy?

30 percent from 7 to 4 days before, 50 percent from 3 to 2 days before, 70 percent the day before, and 100 percent on the day or for a no-show, on both the site and the booking page. See our hotel cancellation guide.

What do children cost?

On the sample plan we read, elementary school children pay 17,600 yen, and infants 6,600 to 14,300 yen depending on meals and bedding; babies sharing a bed are free.
