The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon by Hulic is a 134-room hotel on the floors above a 14-story building beside Kaminarimon, the gate to Sensoji, with its lobby high up and a rooftop terrace facing Tokyo Skytree. Before you book, know five rules: the street entrance locks at 10:30 p.m.; the rooftop terrace is for guests only; only two room types take three people; the smallest rooms have a shower booth, not a tub; and a 10 percent service charge plus tax is added and paid at check-in.

It is a different hotel from the Asakusa View Hotel near Kappabashi; our Asakusa View Hotel guide covers that one. For the temple outside the door, see our Sensoji guide.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from the hotel’s official English and Japanese pages, its FAQ, its accommodation contract and its official booking site, read on October 7, 2026. We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: room rates and which plans include breakfast, which change by date and only show after a date search; an early check-in fee; parking prices; the size of the Universal Room, which the hotel’s pages give as two different figures; and a tattoo rule. The hotel does not publish them.

When does the entrance lock?

For security, the ground-floor main entrance is locked from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. If you will arrive after 10:30 p.m., contact the hotel in advance. Once you have checked in, your room key opens the door.

What if my flight is late?

Tell the hotel your arrival time. Its accommodation contract says that a guest who has not arrived by 8 p.m. without notice, or two hours after a stated arrival time, may be treated as having canceled. Check-in starts at 2 p.m.; the hotel lists no early check-in fee, but it will hold guests’ bags at the front desk. Our late arrival guide compares other hotels.

What does late checkout cost?

CheckoutFee (tax included)
Up to 1 p.m.2,035 yen
Up to 3 p.m.4,070 yen
After 3 p.m.The full rate for a night

Official FAQ and accommodation contract, read October 7, 2026. It may be refused when the hotel is busy.

What will I be asked at check-in?

Guests without an address in Japan give their nationality and passport number, as the contract sets out. Payment is taken at check-in, not at checkout.

Rooms at The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon: which one fits?

Which rooms take three people?

Only the Classy Triple (37 m²) and the Essential Triple (24 m²); both use an extra bed. Every other room type takes one or two guests. The Essential Twin rooms connect, which suits families who want two rooms side by side.

RoomFloorSizeGuestsBath
THE GATE (suite)1258 m²1–2Tub with a view, separate shower
Balcony348 m²1–2Tub and separate shower; private balcony
Classy10–1237 m²1–2 (Triple 1–3)Tub and separate shower

Essential3–1224 m²1–2 (Triple 1–3)Tub and separate shower
Authentic4–1224 m²1–2Tub and shower combined
Modest4–1215–19 m²1–2Shower booth

Official room pages, read October 7, 2026. Bathrobes are only in THE GATE, Balcony and Classy rooms.

Is the Modest room big enough for two?

It sleeps two in one 140 cm-wide bed, in 15 to 19 m², and it has a shower booth instead of a bathtub. If you are two people with large suitcases, or you want a bath, look at Authentic or Essential. A wheelchair-friendly Universal Room exists; the hotel’s English and Japanese pages give its size differently, so ask if space matters.

Can I smoke?

Rooms are non-smoking unless you request a smoking room when you book. There is a smoking area on the 14th floor; the restaurant and bar are non-smoking. Nightwear and slippers are provided, but you may not wear them in the restaurant. The hotel asks guests not to leave power banks charging while out of the room.

Children at The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon

Do kids stay free?

One child per adult can share a bed for free. A child who needs their own bed pays the full adult rate.

Age differs by language. The English FAQ says children under 12; the Japanese FAQ says elementary school age and under, which can include a 12-year-old. The hotel’s contract says the Japanese text prevails where the two differ. Ask if your child is about 12.

Can I get a crib?

Yes, free, for children under 2, but only in THE GATE, Balcony, Classy and Scenic rooms, because of space. Numbers are limited, so ask in advance. Children’s toilet seats and bed rails can also be borrowed. There is a diaper-changing table in the 13th-floor washroom but no nursing room. Our kids stay free guide compares other chains.

The rooftop terrace, restaurant and breakfast

Who can use the rooftop terrace?

The 14th-floor terrace, with its view over Asakusa to Tokyo Skytree, is for hotel guests only. So is the B bar on the same floor, open 6 p.m. to midnight (last order 11:30 p.m.) with 11 seats. The R restaurant & bar on the 13th floor is open to everyone and has 20 terrace seats, which can be moved indoors in bad weather. From the hotel, Tokyo Skytree is a 20 to 30 minute walk, or 3 minutes on the Tobu line; our Tokyo Skytree tickets guide covers entry.

How much is breakfast?

Breakfast in the 13th-floor restaurant runs from 6:30 to 10 a.m. It is 3,300 yen for hotel guests (3,800 yen for others): choose one main dish, eggs Benedict, French toast or an Asakusa tartine, plus a salad station with soup, bread, yogurt and fruit. Whether it is in your rate depends on the plan. There is no room service.

Is there a service charge on food?

The Japanese menus say no service charge is added to food and drink, and the price notice in English says the same. Some English pages say “gratuities are not included,” which can read as if a charge is added; the Japanese text, which the hotel says prevails, does not add one. Outside food is not allowed in the restaurant, except for guests with allergies or small children.

When is the restaurant open, and what does dinner cost?

ServiceHoursPrice (current)
Breakfast6:30 to 10 a.m.3,300 yen guests / 3,800 yen others
Lunch11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.Set 2,850 yen; double main 4,200 yen
Cafe2 to 4 p.m. (last order 3:30)Not listed here
Dinner5 to 10:30 p.m. (last order 10)Courses 6,800 and 8,800 yen; Asakusa Wine Dinner 7,300 yen with 2 hours of free-flowing wine

Official restaurant page, read October 7, 2026. The restaurant seats 50 at tables, 18 at the counter and 20 on the terrace, and is non-smoking.

Restaurant tables can be booked up to six months ahead, and the FAQ gives 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. as the hours for taking reservations. A table on the terrace can be requested, but the hotel may seat you indoors if the weather turns.

Are restaurant prices changing?

Yes. From November 17, 2026, the lunch set rises from 2,850 to 3,300 yen, the double-main lunch from 4,200 to 4,700 yen and the Asakusa Wine Dinner from 7,300 to 7,800 yen, and the notice says other prices will change too. Same-day cancellations or no-shows for restaurant bookings can be charged the full meal price.

Booking, payment and taxes at The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon

What is the cancellation policy?

When you cancelIndividual (up to 9 rooms)Group (10 rooms+)
10 days beforeFree20%
The day before80%80%
On the day or no-show100%100%

Official FAQ and contract, read October 7, 2026. Plans can set their own terms.

The FAQ and contract base the fee on the basic room rate, while the booking site says the total accommodation fee. The Japanese FAQ alone adds that specific dates can carry other cancellation fees. The individual terms cover bookings of up to 9 rooms or 14 guests a day; larger bookings fall under the group terms. Shortening a stay costs one night, whatever the number of nights cut. The hotel keeps no waiting list, so a full date stays full unless you check back. Our hotel cancellation guide compares other hotels.

What is added to the room rate?

The contract lists the order: the room charge, a 10 percent service charge, consumption tax on both, then Tokyo’s accommodation tax. The hotel prints the Tokyo tax as 100 yen per person per night for 10,000 to under 15,000 yen and 200 yen from 15,000 yen, changing on April 1, 2027 to 3 percent for stays of 13,000 yen or more. Our accommodation tax calculator works it out for your dates.

How do I pay?

At check-in, in cash or by card: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, American Express, UnionPay and Discover among them, plus PayPay, Alipay+ and WeChat Pay. On plans that allow prepayment, the FAQ lists three ways: card payment online, bank transfer, or paying at the hotel in advance. The Japanese FAQ adds that cards take a single payment only. The hotel warns that it never contacts guests about bookings through WhatsApp, social media or email; treat such messages as fraud.

Getting to The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon

Which station exit is closest?

Asakusa Station on the Ginza line, exit 2, is 2 minutes on foot; the Toei Asakusa line, exit A4, 3 minutes; the Tobu Skytree line central exit, 4 minutes; the Tsukuba Express exit A1, 8 minutes. With suitcases, the hotel points to the exits with elevators instead: Ginza line exit 1, Toei Asakusa line exit A2b, and the Tobu main entrance.

How long from the airports?

From Haneda, the Keikyu line runs through onto the Toei Asakusa line, about 36 minutes, then 3 minutes on foot. From Narita, the Keisei Sky Access line runs through to Asakusa in about 56 minutes. The Japanese page gives taxi estimates of about 10,000 yen and 40 minutes from Haneda, about 29,000 yen and 90 minutes from Narita, and about 2,000 yen from Tokyo Station; the English page drops the word “about,” but they are estimates.

Can I drive or ship luggage?

The hotel has no parking; it points drivers to the Kaminarimon Underground Parking, a public garage. Bags can be shipped ahead to the hotel with your name and dates on the label, as long as the hotel knows in advance. Laundry handed in by 10 a.m. comes back by 7 p.m., except on Sundays and some holidays, and a coin laundry is about 8 minutes’ walk away.

What else should I know about the stay?

Wi-Fi is free. Massage can be arranged through the front desk for a fee. If you leave something behind, the contract says the hotel keeps it for 7 days, including the day it is found, and then hands it to the nearest police station; food and drink are thrown away the same day. Valuables you did not declare to the front desk are covered only up to 150,000 yen if lost. The contract is written in Japanese and English, and the Japanese text wins if they differ.

Who The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon suits

A red five-story pagoda under a clear blue sky
The five-story pagoda at Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa.

Couples and small families who want to sleep at Kaminarimon, see Sensoji early before the crowds, and spend the evening on a guest-only rooftop. It suits less well a group of four in one room, travelers who will land after 10:30 p.m. and forget to call, drivers, and anyone in a Modest room who wants a bath.

A simple order helps: pick a room type by party size first, note the 2 p.m. check-in and the 10:30 p.m. door, decide on breakfast by plan, and bring the card you will use at check-in.
