Machiya Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa Bettei is a 46-room hotel built in the style of a Kyoto townhouse (machiya), on the bank of the Takase River in Shimogyo Ward, a short walk from Keihan Shichijo Station. It has two buildings, the South and North wings, about 20 m apart on Kiyamachi Street. Before you book, three things matter: prices are per room, not per person; every room has its own cypress (hinoki) bath but there is no shared bath and no dinner; and children below junior high school age cannot stay.

What is the bath like?
Each room has a tub of Japanese cypress, which the hotel says it had made to order in Shizuoka. It is your own bath, so you can use it as often as you like. There is no shared or open-air bath. On longer stays, staff enter the room every other day to look after the cypress tub, and the house rules ask guests not to bathe when heavily drunk.
Can I bathe with a tattoo?
The official pages do not mention tattoos. Since the only bath is the one in your room, the question may not come up, but ask the hotel if you want to be sure.
How do the door codes work?
There are no keys and no checkout desk visit. Each guest gets a personal code that opens the building and the room, so you can come and go at any hour. The phone in the room reaches the front desk by dialing 9 until 22:00.
Getting to Takasegawa Bettei in Kyoto

Which station is closest?
Keihan Shichijo Station, exits 3, 4 and 7, about 5 minutes on foot. Walk north up Kiyamachi Street along the east bank of the river; the South wing comes first and the North wing is about 20 m further.
How do I get there from Kyoto Station?
The access page gives about 5 minutes by taxi, at around 600 to 700 yen, about 10 minutes by city bus, or about 15 minutes on foot from the Central Gate. By bus, take route 4, 17 or 205 from stop A2 at the Kyoto Station bus terminal and get off at Kawaramachi Shomen, about 3 minutes on foot. The official pages do not mention a shuttle.
Can I park a car?
There is a small free car park on site, first come first served, with booking given priority; the hotel asks drivers to contact it in advance. If you use a paid car park nearby, bring the receipt to the front desk and the hotel refunds up to 1,500 yen per night.
Breakfast at Takasegawa Bettei
Is breakfast included?
No. There is no dinner, lunch or room service, though you may order food delivery. Breakfast is an add-on: the hotel’s own Western breakfast, served in your room between 7:30 and 9:00, or a Japanese breakfast from the Kappo Izusen restaurant, also at extra cost. The Western breakfast is 1,980 yen including tax; from January 13, 2027, a renewed version with four small main dishes will be 2,500 yen including tax. Staff, sometimes men, bring it in and set the table.
Is there a vegetarian option?
Yes, at no extra charge: nuts and soy sausage replace the ham and sausage. It uses honey and egg, so it is not vegan; the hotel says it will try to help guests who ask for a vegan meal. The official pages give no other allergy information, so tell the hotel about any allergy when you book.
Prices, children, cancellation and payment at Takasegawa Bettei
How much does a stay cost?
Rates are a room charge: one guest pays the same as two. The rooms page lists tax-included prices from 23,650 yen to 37,180 yen per room per night, and the hotel says bookings on its own site get a discounted rate. Kyoto’s accommodation tax is not included and is paid at the hotel. Since March 1, 2026, the City of Kyoto charges per person per night by the room-only price per person, before consumption tax:
| Room-only price per person per night | Tax |
|---|---|
| Under 6,000 yen | 200 yen |
| 6,000 to under 20,000 yen | 400 yen |
| 20,000 to under 50,000 yen | 1,000 yen |
| 50,000 to under 100,000 yen | 4,000 yen |
| 100,000 yen or more | 10,000 yen |
From the City of Kyoto, read October 16, 2026. Ask the hotel which band applies to your booking.
Can I bring children?
The Japanese pages say children below junior high school age cannot stay, including children sharing a bed, and children of junior high age and older pay the adult rate. The English pages word the age line differently, so if your child is 12, confirm with the hotel. Minors cannot stay without an adult. For other hotels with age rules, see our adults-only hotels guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
The Q&A lists 100 percent for a cancellation on the day or a no-show, 50 percent on the day before, and 20 percent in the days before that. The Q&A and the house rules give different start dates for the 20 percent fee, and group bookings and some plans have their own rules, so read the terms on your plan’s booking page. No fee is charged if transport is cut and you cannot reach the hotel, for example in a typhoon. Our hotel cancellation guide explains how these fees work.
How do I pay?
If you pay at the hotel, the Japanese Q&A lists cash, cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners and UnionPay) and PayPay, Alipay and LINE Pay, all in one payment. Prepaid bookings take cards. The English Q&A gives a slightly different list, so check with the hotel if you plan to use something else.
