JR-East Hotel Mets is the hotel chain of the railway that runs Tokyo’s trains, and it behaves like one: all 30 hotels stand one to four minutes from a JR station, you can pay the room with a Suica card, and the guest lounge pours free coffee while you wait for a train. The rules are plain business-hotel ones with a few sharp edges: check-in 15:00, checkout 11:00, a 20:00 no-show cutoff, 20 percent to cancel the day before, and a free bed-share for one preschooler per bed.

What is Hotel Mets, and where are the 30 hotels?
Hotel Mets belongs to JR-East Hotels, the hotel arm of East Japan Railway, and its concept page promises “modest quality” and a stress-free stay next to a station. The hotel list gives the walk from the JR exit for every one: one minute at Mejiro, Komagome, Akihabara, Gotanda, Koenji, Musashi-Sakai, Kokubunji, Tachikawa, Akabane, Omori, Kawasaki, Tsurumi, Sakuragicho, Mizonokuchi, Urawa, Funabashi, Tsudanuma, Makuhari-Toyosuna, Mito, Utsunomiya, Nagaoka, Niigata, Fukushima, Kitakami and Hachinohe; two at Shinkiba and Sapporo; three at Yokohama and Ofuna (Kamakura); four at Shibuya. Most are in and around Tokyo, with outposts up the Tohoku and Joetsu lines to Niigata and Hachinohe and one in Sapporo.
What is Hotel Mets Premier?
The upper tier, where the chain says it kept the warmth and added quality “from the room decor and bedding to each amenity and even a cup of coffee”. Premier Akihabara, a minute from the Electric Town South Exit, has a bathroom with a separate washing area in every room, USB ports by the bed and a pop-culture design; Premier Sapporo, two minutes from the North Exit, has Scandinavian furniture and big windows, and warns of roadworks for the station redevelopment.
What is in a Shibuya room?
A double has one 140-by-195-centimeter bed, a queen 160 centimeters, a twin two 120-centimeter beds with a 90-centimeter extra bed for a third guest. Standard kit: smart TV, empty fridge, humidifying air purifier, kettle, safe, phone charger, separate-style nightwear, slippers and a smoke hood. Some rooms add a freezer-fridge, microwave, washer-dryer and coffee maker. You can check out on the TV screen.

What are the hours?
15:00 to 11:00, printed on every hotel page and written into Article 11 of the terms as 3 p.m. to 11 a.m., with the room available all day on the middle nights of a longer stay. Shibuya has self-check-in machines with staff on hand.
What if I arrive late?
The terms let the hotel treat the contract as canceled if you have not arrived and have not contacted them by 8 p.m., or two hours after an arrival time you gave. It is the same cutoff as Hotel Keihan and Resol and earlier than Super Hotel’s midnight, so put a realistic time on the booking.
How long will they hold my bags?
From the morning of check-in day, and after checkout until midnight the same day, which suits a late Shinkansen or a Haneda departure. The station-side page makes the point that you can drop the bags and be on a train in minutes.

How does it compare?
The 20-percent day-before fee is the mildest we have found alongside the b hotels and remm; Route Inn charges 50 and Hotel Monterey 80. The 100 percent on the day is standard.

Which room for a family?
A twin gives two free bed-shares; a third adult takes the extra bed. For a family with a child in elementary school, that child is a full-price guest here, where the b hotels would keep them free to age 11. Our family hotels in Tokyo guide sets the chains side by side.
Paying with Suica, and the other ways to pay
Can I really pay the room with a transit card?
Yes. The station-side page lists Suica payment as one of six reasons to stay, and the Shibuya page accepts Suica, PASMO, Kitaca, ICOCA, TOICA, manaca, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA, with one limit: a bill over 20,000 yen cannot be paid this way because that is the card’s charge ceiling. A Suica registered with JRE POINT earns points on the stay, and a transit card can double as your JR Hotel Members card.
What else is accepted?
Yen in cash, credit cards, and the QR wallets d-Barai, au PAY, PayPay, Rakuten Pay, J-Coin Pay, WeChat Pay and Alipay. The front desk does not change money; Shibuya has an exchange machine that takes 14 currencies. Under the terms you show any card or voucher at registration.
Is there parking?
Shibuya has a first-floor lot at 2,000 yen a night, reserved when you book. Premier Akihabara uses a partner garage at 1,500 yen a night, reserved by 21:00 the day before. Premier Sapporo sends you to nearby coin parking.
Breakfast, the lounge and the amenity station
What does breakfast cost?
At Shibuya, 1,980 yen for a Japanese-and-Western buffet with rice balls, open sandwiches and French toast, from 6:30 to 10:30 (last orders 10:00); buy a coupon at the desk on the day if your plan did not include it, and non-guests may eat too. Premier Akihabara lets you choose between a buffet and a cafe breakfast. Preschoolers eat free.
What is free?
Hot coffee and black tea in the guest lounge, Wi-Fi in the whole building, and a lobby amenity station where you pick skincare items and bath salts rather than finding them in the room. The vending corner has drinks, ice and a microwave, which the chain pairs with the station’s take-out food as a dinner plan.
Laundry and smoking?
A coin laundry paid in cash only, with machine status shown on the room TV; laundry, dry cleaning and pressing through the desk at a charge; and a 24-hour smoking booth, because every room is non-smoking and the terms ban smoking anywhere else.
Registration, members and the best-rate promise
What do I show at check-in?
Name, address and contact details; a foreign guest without a Japanese address adds nationality and passport number, presents the passport and has a copy taken. Minors without a parent’s permission can be refused. Pets other than assistance dogs are not allowed in.
What is JR Hotel Members?
A free program across JR-East hotels that gives member rates and JRHM points on stays and dining, joined at the desk or online; a Suica can be your card. The site announces a new membership program and a pause of the member system around its launch, without publishing the new terms, so check the site before you rely on a benefit.
Is the official site cheapest?
The best-rate page says so for identical conditions: same hotel, dates, room, headcount, check-in and checkout times and cancellation terms. Campaign, member-only and coupon prices on other sites are excluded, and the same-day rate on the official site is covered too.
What can I borrow?
Irons, steam irons and ironing boards, hair irons, trouser presses, a Blu-ray player, and for children a crib and bed guard, all in limited numbers and the child items and player by reservation. Wheelchairs and other barrier-free equipment are kept too. The room TV carries multilingual channels and shows whether a washing machine is free.
Can I send luggage ahead or ship it home?
The desk accepts parcel delivery and dispatch, listed among the room services, and the terms follow the usual Japanese form: a bag that arrives before you do is the hotel’s responsibility only if it agreed to receive it, and is handed over at check-in. Write the stay date and your name on the slip.
Who Hotel Mets is for
Rail travelers who want to step off a JR train and into a lobby, families with under-sixes, and anyone who likes paying with the same card they used for the train.
