Halekulani Okinawa is the Honolulu hotel’s sister resort on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island, two wings on a public beach in Onna Village about 75 minutes north of Naha Airport. Its English FAQ is one of the most detailed of any Japanese resort, and it answers the questions that decide a beach holiday: check-in 15:00, checkout at noon, cancellation fees from 7 days out that do not pause for a typhoon until the airlines act, children free in a parent’s bed but counted as adults if they need their own, valet parking at 3,000 yen, no QR or e-money payments, and five pools with two different tattoo rules.
Everything below is from the hotel’s official English FAQ: the accommodation, children, restaurant, facility, activity, access and typhoon sections. Room rates are not here; the fees, hours and rules the hotel prints are.

What is Halekulani Okinawa, and which wing should I book?

Two buildings at 1967-1 Nakama, Onna Village. The Beachfront Wing looks over lawns to the sea, has the direct beach access, the family pools and the indoor hot-spring pool on its second floor, and holds the all-day restaurant House Without A Key. The Sunset Wing faces the west-coast sunsets and carries the resort’s facilities for guests aged 16 and over, including a pool and a bar, plus the restaurants SHIROUX and AOMI and the Sunset Bar SPECTRA. Families sleep in the Beachfront Wing; couples who want the quiet pool book the Sunset Wing. Rooms have king beds of 194 by 205 cm or Hollywood-style twins of 135 by 205 cm, with a third 102 cm bed in triples; a wheelchair-accessible Premier Ocean Front Twin has a roll-in shower, grab bars and a tub seat. Our Okinawa map shows where Onna sits on the west coast.
Is the beach private?
No, and the hotel says so plainly: the beach in front is part of Onna Village’s coastline inside a national park and open to the public. What is reserved for guests is the parking area, the chairs and the umbrellas. Fireworks are banned on the beach by village regulation, and glass containers are not allowed, but you can bring your own food and drink there; not to the pools.
Check-in at 15:00, the security deposit, and checkout at noon
What happens at check-in?
A security deposit is taken, and the FAQ warns it cannot be paid with a contactless card; have a physical card ready. Payment in general is by major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners, American Express, Toyota Finance and UnionPay), contactless only at the front desk and Club Lounge, or cash in yen. Electronic money and QR-code payments are not accepted anywhere on the property, foreign currency is not accepted, and there is no ATM; the Lawson across the road, three minutes from the gate, has one that takes foreign cards, and the front desk exchanges 12 currencies including USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, KRW, TWD and CNY.
Can I use the pool before my room is ready?
Yes. The FAQ says guests may use the pools and other facilities on both check-in and checkout days, with lockers for valuables in the Beachfront Wing changing room. For bags, the FAQ only mentions storage at Guest Services after checkout. Luggage sent ahead is accepted at Guest Services if you present the courier receipt matching the booking name and arrival date (and the agency name if booked through one); shipping bags home domestically costs about US$30 regardless of size.
Cancellation: 20, 50, 100, and the typhoon clause
| When you cancel | Fee |
|---|---|
| 7 days before arrival | 20% of the accommodation fee |
| 3 days before | 50% |
| On the day | 100% |
| No-show | 100% |
Plans and dates can carry different terms, and bookings of six rooms or more are handled separately. The clause that matters on this coast is the typhoon one: the hotel waives fees only when airlines announce cancellation-fee waivers for canceled flights. If you cancel before that announcement because a storm is forecast, the normal scale applies. Bookings through travel agencies or online platforms are canceled with the booking source. Our Japan weather warnings guide explains how typhoon alerts are issued.
What changes during a typhoon?
The FAQ has a whole section. Terrace furniture is removed or roped down, plants are netted, and guests are asked to be careful with room and car doors in the wind. In-room massage is not offered and the spa may suspend hours, laundry service may stop, and nearby hospitals may handle emergencies only, so the hotel advises bringing extra medication in case flights home are delayed.
Children: free in the bed, an adult if they need one

Children aged 12 and under stay free when sharing an existing bed with a parent, one child per adult. Two catches follow. On a breakfast-inclusive plan, the bed-sharing child is charged separately, though breakfast is free for ages 0 to 6. And any child 12 or under who needs their own bed is counted as an adult in the occupancy, which changes the room type you need.
What does the hotel lend for babies?
Reserve in advance, since numbers are limited: pajamas in junior (1 to 4), SS (5 to 7) and S (8 and up) sizes, a crib for under 24 months, a bed guard for 18 to 60 months, two kinds of stroller (reclining for infants who cannot hold their head up, and non-reclining) that can be taken outside the hotel, a step stool, potty seat, diaper bin, baby bathtub, bottle sterilizer and formula heater. There is no children’s shampoo; regular and swim diapers are sold at the Halekulani Boutique. Baby food is easy: rice porridge and vegetable puree are free at every outlet and via in-room dining, chicken or white-fish puree is 700 yen, and you may bring unopened store-bought baby food for the kitchen to warm.
Which restaurants take children?
House Without A Key and the steakhouse KINGDOM have no restrictions and serve children’s menus. SHIROUX is for ages 12 and over. AOMI takes children at table seats until 20:00 with last entry at 18:00, but the sushi counter and the room after 20:00 are 12 and over. Sunset Bar SPECTRA is 20 and over after 20:00, counter included. Kids’ menus (hamburg steak, udon) need no reservation.
The pools, the beach and the tattoo rules

Which pools allow tattoos?
The resort splits its pools in two. At the Orchid Pool, Kids Pool and Indoor Pool, guests are asked not to expose body art larger than the palm of a hand, including temporary paint and stickers, and rash guards are lent for the purpose. The Quiet Pool and Ocean Terrace Pool are open to all guests including those with tattoos, though the hotel may still ask for a rash guard depending on size and design. The beach is open to everyone with tattoos. All pools are for staying guests only, and non-guests are limited to the restaurants and boutiques. Our tattoo guide has the wider Japanese context.
Is there an onsen?
Two. The indoor pool on the second floor of the Beachfront Wing uses natural hot-spring water and requires swimwear. The SpaHalekulani Heat Experience, with a sauna and hot-spring baths, is open only to guests who have booked a spa treatment, and the spa itself is for staying guests only. The fitness center is open 24 hours, with workout wear for rent. Swimsuits are sold at the boutique and rented at the indoor pool; no water floats are provided, but arm floats for children are free. Food and drink are not allowed in the pool areas, where a pool bar serves seasonal snacks.
Breakfast, the restaurants and dress codes
How much is breakfast, and where?
6,500 yen for adults and 3,250 yen for children aged 12 and under; at the buffet, ages 3 to 6 pay 1,500 yen and ages 2 and under eat free, and in-house guests under 6 eat free. The buffet is at House Without A Key on the Beachfront Wing’s lobby floor; SHIROUX serves a Western set and a la carte (7:00 to 11:00, including the signature souffle pancakes, also at House Without A Key from noon to 14:30), and AOMI a Japanese set. Breakfast cannot be reserved; it is first come, first served, and non-guests may join with hotel guests given priority.
Do I need dinner reservations?
Lunch is first come, first served and the bar takes no reservations, but dinner and afternoon tea should be booked, and can be, up to five months before the stay for every night of it. SHIROUX serves a fixed dinner menu only, with wine pairings at about 7,500 yen. A private room between SHIROUX and AOMI seats eight for 35,000 yen per party. Vegan menus exist at House Without A Key, KINGDOM and in-room dining, and on five days’ notice at SHIROUX and AOMI; cakes, flowers and message plates need three days. House Without A Key runs live entertainment daily at 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00 for half an hour each. Dress is resort casual at SHIROUX, AOMI and KINGDOM and casual resort wear at House Without A Key and SPECTRA; arrive in swimwear or gym clothes and you will be seated on the House Without A Key terrace. For eating outside the resort, our Okinawa food guide starts in Onna.
Getting there, parking and the small print

How do I get there from Naha Airport?
By car, about 1 hour 15 minutes: the Okinawa Expressway to the Yaka interchange, then north for about 13 miles to the hotel on the left; Route 58 along the coast takes about 90 minutes. The airport shuttle and airport limousine bus both run, and the hotel arranges taxis and private cars for a fee with a price list on its transportation page. Rental cars can be booked through the concierge with a day’s notice, and the FAQ reminds foreign drivers to carry an international driving permit. Our getting to Okinawa guide covers the flights and ferries to Naha.
How much is parking?
Valet only, 3,000 yen per vehicle per night, no reservation needed; pull up to the entrance. It is free for Premier Club, suite and villa guests and on plans that include parking.
Smoking, pets, Wi-Fi and gifts
Every room and terrace is non-smoking, e-cigarettes included; the designated smoking spots are two in each wing and one by the Quiet Pool. Pets are not allowed except guide and service dogs. Wi-Fi is free via a QR code. The hotel lends wheelchairs by reservation, sells no medicine, runs two 24-hour self-service laundries, and does not sell Churaumi Aquarium tickets. Surprise arrangements (flowers, balloons, hotel-made cakes, wine) go through Guest Relations with about a week’s notice and payment by card or transfer, and a gift shipped to the hotel is handed over at check-in or placed in the room.
Who Halekulani Okinawa is for
Families who want a beach, a hot-spring pool and a children’s kit that runs to bottle sterilizers, and couples who want the Sunset Wing, with its pool and bar for guests aged 16 and older, provided both accept a cancellation scale that starts a week out and a cashless-but-not-QR payment setup. Our family hotels guide is the city counterpart for the Tokyo end of the trip.
(For an Okinawa stay with a dog: our hotel pet fees table notes that Okuma Private Beach & Resort includes 1 dog in its base rate, with ¥6,000 per night from the second, and that Kanucha Bay Hotel & Villas takes small to medium dogs of 12 kg or less.)

Bottom line (2026). Check in from 15:00, out by noon. Cancellation is 20 percent from 7 days out, 50 from 3 days, 100 on the day, and a typhoon changes nothing until the airlines cancel. Children 12 and under share a bed free, one per adult, but count as adults if they need a bed. Valet parking 3,000 yen; no QR or e-money payments. Tattoos are fine at the Quiet and Ocean Terrace pools and the beach, covered at the other three. Breakfast 6,500 yen. As of September 18, 2026.
