Furuya Ryokan opened in 1806 in the center of Atami, Shizuoka, and calls itself the oldest inn in the town; 2026 is its 220th year. It runs its baths on its own hot spring and still serves dinner and breakfast in your room. Before you book, three things matter: it takes bookings online only, it asks for card prepayment, and guests under 18 cannot stay on their own.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Furuya Ryokan’s official Japanese pages, its official booking page and Atami City, read on October 20, 2026. We have not stayed there. Where the inn’s older English pages give a different figure, we follow the Japanese pages or leave the figure out. Deliberately not stated: the tattoo rule, room capacities, whether prices include local taxes, the day-by-day cancellation rates, the dinner and bath hours, and which allergies the kitchen can handle. Confirm these with the inn.

Booking and paying at Furuya Ryokan

How do I book?

Online. The Japanese FAQ says the inn does not take bookings by phone and cannot answer questions by email. Questions go through the contact form on the official site, and the inn replies later by email or phone. The form asks guests not to use hotmail.com, outlook.com or infoseek.jp addresses, as the inn’s replies may not reach them. Booking on the inn’s own site adds a 1,000-yen shop voucher per room on the basic plan.

How much does a stay cost?

The official booking page shows lowest prices per person, with dinner and breakfast in the room. For the standard 13-course plan, examples on October 20, 2026 were:

Room type (inn’s code)From, per personTwo guests
A42,020 yen84,040 yen
B45,980 yen–
F and G51,260 yen–
W63,580 yen127,160 yen

Lowest prices shown on the official booking page, tax included as displayed. Read October 20, 2026.

New Year plans cost more. The inn says its online rates change several times a year, so check your date. Atami City also charges a bathing tax of 150 yen per person per day and an accommodation tax of 200 yen per person per night, with children under 12 exempt; the inn’s pages do not say whether its prices include them. See our onsen bathing tax guide.

How do I pay?

The Japanese FAQ says the inn currently asks every guest to prepay by card when booking, and paying at the inn is not an option.

What is the cancellation policy?

The policy is a PDF on the official site. The rate depends on how many rooms you book, and peak dates such as Obon, Golden Week, New Year and fireworks nights can have special rates. Plans sold by other booking sites or travel agents can follow different rules. Read the PDF before you book; our hotel cancellation guide explains how these tables work.

What do children cost?

The FAQ lists child rates of 70 percent of the adult price (older elementary school children, up to age 12) and 50 percent (age 4 to younger elementary school), plus options without meals. From age 13, guests pay the adult rate. Guests under 18 cannot stay on their own, whatever their nationality.

The hot spring at Furuya Ryokan

A stone-arched cave opening with steam, framed by green plants
Hashiriyu, a hot spring source in Atami. It is not the inn’s own spring, Seizaemon-no-yu.

What is special about the water?

The baths use the inn’s own source, Seizaemon-no-yu, as 100 percent flowing hot spring water with no added water, heating, filtering or chlorine. The inn says the water leaves the source at about 90°C and is a sodium-calcium chloride spring. The baths are drained and refilled every day.

What are the shared baths like?

There is one bath for men and one for women, each with an indoor bath of cypress and an outdoor bath of stone. Towels and toiletries are not kept at the baths, so bring them from your room. Phones and cameras are not allowed in the baths or changing rooms. There is no private family bath to book, but several room types come with their own bath; the inn notes its in-room open-air baths have no shower.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos. Ask the inn before you book; our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Can young children use the baths?

From the start of elementary school, children cannot enter the bath for the other sex. Babies still in diapers are asked not to use the shared baths, as the water is about 42°C.

Meals at Furuya Ryokan

What is dinner like?

Since the inn opened, dinner and breakfast have been served in the guest rooms. Dinner is the inn’s own Kyoto-style kaiseki; the October menu ran from an aperitif and sesame tofu made with Tanna milk to sashimi, Japanese Black beef grilled on a magnolia leaf, chestnut rice and fruit. Dinner starts at a set time for all guests, so arrive in time and confirm the time with the inn. Larger groups eat in a separate private room, never with other guests. A whole simmered splendid alfonsino can be added for 7,590 yen.

What is breakfast like?

Choose 8:00 or 8:30. Both white rice and rice porridge are served.

The rooms and the old house

All rooms come with chairs and a table as standard; a low Japanese table can be set instead for 1,500 yen per room before tax, for up to five rooms a day. The inn is frank that its rooms do not have views, and that Atami’s fireworks are hard to see from them, though about 70 percent of the display can be seen from in front of the gate. A new room type opened in July 2026.

The entrance gate was used in Akira Kurosawa’s film Kagemusha, and the writer Tokutomi Soho stayed here for three to four months a year over 20 years from the early Meiji era. A monument marks the site of Atami’s first post office. Since 2022, the annex has had Second Lobby, a library and workspace with three soundproof booths. The history page has more.
