Ito Yukitei Kawana Bettei is a small inn of five detached villas on a hillside in Kawana, Ito, on the Izu Peninsula. The single-story wooden villas sit along a covered walkway with small gardens, and the inn describes views over Sagami Bay from its wood terraces. Before you book, three things matter: every villa has its own open-air bath and cypress bath; the official site and booking page are in Japanese only; and Ito adds a bathing tax of 300 yen per person per night.

What is the hot spring water like?

Can I use the bath with a tattoo?

The official pages say nothing about tattoos. The baths are private to each villa, but ask the inn before you book if it matters. Our tattoo and onsen guide covers what to ask.

What else is in the room?

The site lists a washlet toilet, two 32-inch TVs, a DVD player, a fridge, a humidifier, an electric kettle and a safe, plus yukata, pajamas, bathrobes, samue and a hair dryer. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms. Massage is offered; confirm the price with the inn when you book.

Meals at Ito Yukitei Kawana Bettei

What is dinner like?

Dinner, called Hanayagi no Bansan, is creative kaiseki by head chef Kazuhiko Ikeda, who has long cooked Kyoto kaiseki, using seasonal and local ingredients. It is served in fully private dining rooms in the main building so dishes arrive freshly made; an inn blog post says the rooms come with either a sunken floor table or chairs, and an older post says the menu changes monthly.

What about breakfast?

Breakfast is called Ajiwai no Asage and comes with tea from Kawane in Shizuoka. The official pages do not describe its format or time.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

The official pages have no allergy or diet policy, and they do not mention vegetarian or halal meals. A blog post about a pregnancy plan says the inn can adjust if told in advance what a guest cannot eat. Send your needs in writing when you book.
