Onsen Yado Mizuguchi is a small hot-spring inn on the bank of the Katsura River in Shuzenji Onsen, Izu, about a minute on foot from the Chikurin no Komichi bamboo path. It has only a handful of rooms, a café of its own by Katsura Bridge, and baths of natural hot spring water. Before you book, three things matter: every room is Japanese-style with a shared toilet and washbasin; the kitchen cannot do vegetarian, vegan or halal meals; and booking is on a Japanese-only page.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Onsen Yado Mizuguchi’s official Japanese site and its official booking page, read on October 20, 2026. We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: the tattoo rule, any shuttle, the number and cost of parking spaces, a curfew, room sizes, and whether there is a private or open-air bath, none of which the official pages give. The number of rooms and the guests per room are left out because the official pages list them differently; ask the inn.

What are the rooms like?

All rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms, several looking toward the Katsura River or the trees along it. Each has a TV, fridge, air conditioner and electric kettle, and yukata and bath towels are provided. The booking page marks every room type without bath or toilet: the toilets and washbasins are shared. On the 2nd floor, some rooms open onto a shared balcony, which the inn renewed from February 4, 2026. A 1st-floor room has a wall of windows, and the inn suggests it for older relatives and small children.

The inn says the whole place can be booked for a family or group, like a holiday house. The shared lobby looks over the Katsura River, and the front desk keeps the old building as it was. If you are new to this style of stay, our guide to staying in a ryokan covers the basics.

Is there a café at the inn?

Yes. The inn runs a tea house, Take no Sato Mizuguchi, at the foot of Katsura Bridge, next to the bamboo path. It is open 11:00 to 16:00 and closes on irregular days.

The baths at Onsen Yado Mizuguchi

What are the baths, and when are they open?

The baths are natural hot spring water flowing straight from the source, split into a men’s and a women’s bath. They are open 7:30 to 9:45 in the morning and 15:30 to 23:00 in the evening. The official pages do not say whether there is a private or open-air bath.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos. Ask the inn before you book; our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Meals at Onsen Yado Mizuguchi

What are dinner and breakfast like?

Dinner is Izu beef from a local farm: sukiyaki in autumn and winter, shabu-shabu in spring and summer. It starts at 18:30 or 19:00, and the inn tells you which at check-in. Breakfast starts at 8:00 or 8:30, with a menu that changes daily and many small dishes. Meals are served in a dining room, except the Izu beef tsuke-soba plan, which is served in your room. On a room-only plan, the inn notes many places to eat nearby.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

Only in part. The booking page asks you to say if there is anything you cannot eat because of an allergy, but states plainly that the inn does not cater for vegetarian, vegan or halal diets, seafood allergies, or children’s meals. If any of these applies, a room-only plan is the safer choice.
