Onjuku Yagura (“Yagura” for short) is a hot-spring inn that looks down over Yufuin town in Oita, with a view of Mount Yufu, known as the “Fuji of Bungo.” Before you book, three things matter: the official site is in Japanese only and links out to Japanese booking sites; rates start at 28,600 yen with two meals, but the site does not say whether that is per person or per room; and the last check-in is 18:30.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Yagura’s official Japanese site, plus Yufu City and Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs for the taxes, read on October 13, 2026. We have not stayed there. The inn has no English name on its site; we use the one in its web address. Deliberately not stated: the number of rooms, breakfast, bath hours, the tattoo rule, children’s rates, the cancellation policy, payment methods and parking, none of which the official pages give.

How far is it from Yufuin Station?

The access page puts the inn about 5 minutes by car from JR Yufuin Station. The inn can pick you up at the station between 15:00 and 17:00 if you contact it first; outside those hours, take a taxi, which the page also lists at 5 minutes.

How do I get there from Oita Airport or Fukuoka?

From Oita Airport, the direct bus to JR Yufuin Station takes 55 minutes, according to the inn. From JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka, the inn’s page lists the Yufuin no Mori train to Yufuin at about two hours. The official pages do not mention parking, so ask the inn if you plan to drive. Our Yufuin guide covers the town itself.

Rooms and the private baths at Onjuku Yagura

What kinds of rooms are there?

The room page shows rooms in the main building and in a detached annex. It says some rooms come with open-air baths, and the photos name several of them, such as Shirotae, Hatsuse, Onoe and Wakaba. The annex rates are marked as including an indoor bath. Because the pages describe the room baths in more than one way, ask the inn which bath your room has. Every room has an air purifier and a humidifier.

Can I smoke in the room?

There are non-smoking rooms. In the other rooms, the page allows electronic cigarettes only; paper cigarettes cannot be used.

The shared baths at Yagura

What are the large baths like?

Besides the room baths, the inn has two large hot-spring baths: the men’s Tsuki no Yu (moon bath) and the women’s Hana no Yu (flower bath), where the inn invites you to stretch your legs out. The official pages do not give the bath hours, the spring type or a bookable private bath, so ask at check-in.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not say. Ask the inn before you book, especially if you plan to use the shared baths. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Meals at Onjuku Yagura

What is dinner like?

The meals page says the inn cooks with seasonal ingredients and names top-grade Bungo beef, Yufuin free-range chicken, handmade Yufuin tofu and salt-grilled ayu (sweetfish). Its featured courses are an irori (hearth) kaiseki, a fugu (pufferfish) kaiseki and Bungo beef shabu-shabu. Extras can be added, before tax: horse-meat sashimi at 3,500 yen, chicken tataki at 1,800 yen and a 200 g steak at 5,000 yen, with local fish such as isaki, shiroshita flounder and Seki aji at market price. Photos show a dining area; the page does not say whether meals are served in your room.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

The official pages say nothing about allergies, vegetarian or halal meals. Write to the inn well before your stay. The meals page does not describe breakfast either.

Can I come just for lunch?

Yes. Lunch runs from 11:30 to 14:00 and must be booked by the day before. Adding a hot-spring bath costs 500 yen more than the lunch price, and a rest in a room with an open-air bath, lunch included, runs from 11:00 to 14:00 for 10,000 yen before tax.
