Nogami Honkan is an onsen ryokan in Kitahama, central Beppu, where every room is a tatami room. It has its own hot-spring source that flows straight into the baths, two gender-separated baths and three private baths. Before you book, three things matter: the private baths are booked at check-in, not in advance; plans are room only or breakfast; and only some room types have their own bath.

The baths at Nogami Honkan

What are the main baths like?
All the baths use the inn’s own hot-spring source, free-flowing (not recirculated). The 1st-floor bath has a hot-water fall and a floor covered in mineral deposits; the 2nd-floor bath has cypress walls and a crane relief. They swap between men and women: the 1st-floor bath is for men from evening to night and for women in the morning, and the 2nd-floor bath the other way round, so you can try both.
How do the private baths work?
There are three private baths: a cypress bath, a barrier-free bath designed for wheelchair users, and an art mosaic bath. Book a time slot when you check in; the FAQ says they cannot be reserved in advance.
When are the baths open, and can I bathe with a tattoo?
The official pages give no bath hours and do not mention tattoos. Ask the inn before you book; our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask. Takegawara Onsen, a well-known Beppu public bath with a sand bath, is about 1 minute on foot from the inn and has its own rules.
Getting to Nogami Honkan in Beppu

The inn is about 10 minutes on foot from Beppu Station and 5 minutes from the Beppu Kitahama bus stop. By car, it is about 25 minutes from Beppu IC. The official pages do not mention a shuttle. Parking has 8 paid spaces, first come, first served, with no reservations; if they are full, the inn points you to nearby coin parking. The front desk can hold your luggage before check-in and after checkout. For things to do in town, see our Beppu guide.
Meals at Nogami Honkan
Is breakfast included?
You choose room only or with breakfast. Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 9:30 in the 2nd-floor dining room, enclosed in bamboo, a symbol of Beppu; the bamboo lounge next to it is also used.
What about dinner and allergies?
The current official pages do not describe a dinner plan. The FAQ says that a Japanese meal at the inn needs an advance booking. Allergies and special diets are not mentioned, so contact the inn before you travel.
Cancellation, payment and taxes at Nogami Honkan
What is the cancellation policy?
The accommodation terms (dated January 1, 2024) set fees as a share of the basic room charge. For bookings of up to 10 people, it is 100 percent from 3 days before, on the day, or for a no-show, and nothing 4 or more days before. For 11 people or more, 100 percent applies from 10 days before. Check the rule shown for your plan, and see our hotel cancellation guide.
How do I pay, and what do children cost?
The terms say you pay at the front desk on departure, in cash or by other means the inn accepts, such as credit cards; the card brands are not listed. Child rates are not on the current official pages.
Which taxes apply?
Beppu charges a tiered bathing tax on top of the room price; see Beppu City’s bathing tax page and our onsen bathing tax guide. Oita Prefecture also received national approval on September 30, 2026 for an accommodation tax, which is planned to start in January 2027 or later (as of October 2026), according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
