Takinoya (Noboribetsu Onsenkyo Takinoya) is a ryokan in Noboribetsu Onsen, Hokkaido, with a history of more than ninety years and water from four kinds of hot spring. The name ends in the character for “home,” and the inn says everything it means is in that word. Before you book, three things matter: dinner cannot be served if you arrive after 19:00; only the D and DW rooms have hot-spring water in their own bath; and the plan pages are in Japanese, even on the English booking screen.

We have not stayed there. Deliberately not stated: the cancellation percentages (the official booking pages give different figures), the tattoo rule, payment methods, dietary options, parking, a shuttle and room capacities, none of which the official pages settle.

You reach the inn from the busy hot-spring street over its own footbridge across the Kusurisanbetsu River, a stream of hot-spring water. At the entrance stands an onko (Japanese yew), a tree the Ainu people held sacred. The banquet hall, Kiri, keeps the alcove post and paulownia room of the restaurant the founder once ran.

By train, ride the limited express from Minami-Chitose (one stop from the airport) to JR Noboribetsu, about 43 minutes. From JR Sapporo, the limited express takes about one hour, or a Chuo Bus or Donan Bus to Noboribetsu Onsen about 1 hour 40 minutes.

What about the last stretch from JR Noboribetsu?

From JR Noboribetsu Station, take a taxi (about 10 minutes) or the Donan Bus bound for Noboribetsu Onsen (about 15 minutes) and walk about three minutes from the bus terminal. When are the baths open?

The top-floor bath, Kumoi no Yu, uses salt and iron springs and looks out over the forest; it is open 14:00–22:00 and 5:00–9:00. The bath on the 2nd basement floor sits in a garden and uses radium and sulfur springs; it is open 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–10:00, closed from midnight to 5:00. Its sauna runs 15:00–22:00 and 6:00–9:00. The water comes from Jigokudani, and the inn lists skin conditions, cuts, poor circulation and rheumatism among its uses.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages do not mention tattoos, private baths or which bath is for men or women. Ask before you book. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Meals at Takinoya

What are dinner and breakfast like?

Both are served in Genseirin, the dining area on the 1st and basement floors next to the kitchen, where every table is a private room facing the Japanese garden. Dinner is a kaiseki meal of local seasonal food from sea and mountains. Breakfast runs 7:30–9:00 and dinner 17:30–19:00. Arrive after 19:00 and the inn cannot serve dinner; see our late arrival guide.

Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?

The official pages say nothing about allergies or vegetarian meals, so contact the inn before you book. After dinner, the Shirakaba counter bar opens 20:30–24:00, and the fireside lounge 7:00–22:00.
