Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel (2026): Shuttle, Onsen, Fees

Guide·October 17, 2026·17 min read·Sourced & cross-checked

Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel is a 265-room hotel on the Yojiro waterfront in Kagoshima, with Sakurajima across the bay from every room except the singles, and a hot-spring bath on the 13th floor. Before you book, five things matter: the free shuttle from Kagoshima-Chuo Station stops in the late afternoon; the English pages are out of date on the airport bus and the cancellation fee; many meal plans charge 50 percent three days before; the hotel says nothing about tattoos; and a city accommodation tax is planned for 2027.

For the rest of the city, see our Kagoshima map; for a hilltop alternative, our guide to Shiroyama Hotel Kagoshima.

Honto check: Every rule and figure below is from Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel’s official Japanese and English pages, its accommodation terms, its official booking page, the shuttle timetable revised April 1, 2026, and Kagoshima City’s tax pages, read on October 9, 2026. We have not stayed there. Where the English pages disagree with the Japanese pages, we use the Japanese and say so. Deliberately not stated: the tattoo rule at the bath, any advice on volcanic ash, QR code payment, a height limit in the car park, and a taxi fare from the airport to the hotel, none of which the official pages give.

When does the free shuttle run?

The hotel is about 10 minutes by car from JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the Japanese site says, and it runs a free shuttle. The timetable revised on April 1, 2026 has two parts. A loop runs hotel, station, Tenmonkan, hotel seven times a day, and a one-way service runs from the hotel only in the evening.

Hotel (arr)9:3510:3511:3513:5514:5516:0517:05

From the official shuttle timetable (PDF), revised April 1, 2026, read October 9, 2026.

The timetable is blunt: from the evening, no shuttle runs from the station or Tenmonkan to the hotel. The evening buses at 18:30, 20:30 and 21:20 leave the hotel for the station and Tenmonkan, and you cannot board them in town. The English access page still says only that the shuttle takes about 20 minutes, so if your train arrives after 16:42, plan on the city bus or a taxi.

Which city bus goes to the hotel?

The Yojiro 1-chome stop is about a minute on foot from the hotel. The timetable names Kagoshima City Bus routes 16-2 and 16-3 and Kagoshima Kotsu route 32-1, and says all three leave Kagoshima-Chuo Station from stop East 15. The English page still gives the older “bus 16”.

How do I get there from Kagoshima Airport?

The Japanese access page says to take the airport bus bound for Kagoshima city, about 40 minutes, get off at Kagoshima-Chuo Station or Tenmonkan, and change to the shuttle. It adds that the airport bus no longer stops in front of the hotel. The English page still describes a bus to Yojiro 1-chome, in front of the hotel; trust the Japanese page. Given the 16:42 cut-off, an evening flight means a city bus or taxi for the last leg.

How far is Sakurajima?

The Japanese site gives 10 minutes by car to the ferry terminal and 15 minutes on the ferry; the English site puts it at about 25 minutes by car and ferry.

Rooms at Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel

Which rooms face Sakurajima?

All except the singles. The Japanese site says every single room faces the city; every other room looks across to Sakurajima. The English room page says there are twelve room types but shows seven:

RoomSizeView and floor
Royal Suite125 m²Sakurajima
Junior Suite76 m²Sakurajima from living room and bedroom
Japanese-style room28–65 m²Sakurajima
Deluxe Twin44 m²Sakurajima, 12th (top guest) floor
Standard Twin22 m²Sakurajima; type A floors 5–8, type B 9–12
Double22 m²Sakurajima, floors 9–12
Single15 m²City side

From the official room pages, read October 9, 2026. Beds in most rooms are 203 cm long; one English page still says 195 cm.

The standard twins have a large window opening onto a balcony. The booking page also sells an economy single of 14.5 m² on the 4th floor only, and warns that a banquet hall sits on the floor below. For the view, pick a twin or double; for the higher floors, ask for a type B twin.

Is the hotel non-smoking?

Yes. Since April 1, 2021, every room is non-smoking, and smoking areas are on the 1st and 8th floors.

What is in the room?

Free Wi-Fi and wired internet, a TV with YouTube, a kettle and tea, a fridge, a hair dryer, a toilet with a bidet seat, a yukata and slippers, and a toothbrush set, razor and brush.

The 13th-floor onsen at Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel

What are the onsen hours?

The bath is a natural hot spring with water and heat added, a chloride spring, on the 13th floor, open 6:00 to 10:00 and 15:00 to midnight; go in at least 30 minutes before closing. Men get a far-infrared sauna and women a steam sauna, and the saunas close 30 minutes before the bath. The hotel suggests the morning, when the sun rises behind Sakurajima. Non-staying visitors pay 1,500 yen.

Is the onsen accessible?

Not fully. The booking page says you take the lift to the 12th floor and climb a private staircase to the 13th. The hotel lends wheelchairs if you call ahead, but the official pages offer no other way up to the bath.

Can I bathe with a tattoo?

The official pages, terms and booking page say nothing about tattoos. Ask before you book; our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.

Food and children at Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel

What does breakfast cost?

Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet of about 50 dishes at Torian, the first-floor café-restaurant, from 7:00 to 10:00. It costs 3,000 yen for adults, 1,900 yen for elementary school children and 1,100 yen for children aged 3 and over, tax included. Torian’s Japanese page says it can adapt food for allergies.

Where can I eat dinner?

Torian runs a dinner buffet for limited periods, 17:30 to 21:30 (last orders 21:00), at 4,500 yen booked ahead or 5,000 yen on the day, plus 200 yen before holidays, for 90 minutes. The Japanese restaurant Shichisai, on the 2nd floor, serves 17:30 to 21:30 and closes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. The 13th-floor Sky Lounge Phoenix serves French food, with the counter bar Subaru beside it.

What do children cost?

The FAQ says children below elementary school age can share a bed free, and charges begin from elementary school. Under the terms, a child of elementary age or younger pays 70 percent of the adult rate with adult meals and bedding, 50 percent with children’s meals and bedding, and 30 percent for bedding only. A baby cot is 2,000 yen a night plus tax, booked ahead, and children get their own yukata, toothbrush and slippers. Write a preschooler’s age in the booking notes. Fees and rules at Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel

What is the cancellation policy?

For direct bookings of up to 14 people, the terms and the FAQ agree: 50 percent the day before, and 100 percent on the day or for a no-show. The terms add that a plan’s own rule comes first, and many plans with meals on the booking page charge 50 percent three days before and 100 percent from two days before. The English facilities page lists only the same-day and no-show charges, so do not read it as free cancellation until the day. Bookings through travel agents follow each agent’s rules. See our hotel cancellation guide.

What if I arrive late or leave late?

The FAQ asks you to call the front desk if you will arrive after 22:00. The terms are stricter: with no word from you by 20:00, or two hours after the arrival time you gave, the hotel may treat the booking as canceled. The front desk is open 24 hours and there is no curfew. Late checkout costs 30 percent of the room charge for up to 3 hours, 50 percent for up to 6 hours, and 100 percent beyond that.

What taxes will I pay?

A bathing tax of 150 yen is added. The hotel’s Japanese room page charges it from junior high school age, and Kagoshima City exempts anyone aged 15 and under. There is no accommodation tax yet, but Kagoshima City plans one of 200 yen per person per night from April 1, 2027, which the national government approved on September 30, 2026. See our guide to the onsen bathing tax.

How do I pay and book?

The hotel takes cash and a long list of cards, including Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club and debit cards. The terms say payment may be taken at check-in, and foreign guests register their passport number. One snag: the English booking page shows no plans; the Japanese booking page lists them. You can also book by phone on +81-99-253-2024, or use the English contact form, which promises a reply within three days.

Parking, laundry and luggage

The outdoor car park holds 200 cars at 1,000 yen a night, tax included, with no booking needed and access around the clock; some plans include free parking. A coin laundry on the 4th floor runs 6:00 to 23:00, 300 yen a wash and 100 yen per 20 minutes of drying, so bring 100-yen coins. The first-floor cloakroom keeps bags, and the information counter sends parcels from 7:00 to 22:00.

Other services at Kagoshima Sun Royal Hotel

Can I eat in my room?

Yes, in the evening. The English facilities page lists room service from Shichisai, the Japanese restaurant, and from Sky Lounge Phoenix, both from 17:30 to 21:00. Phoenix also opens for lunch from 11:30 to 14:30 (last orders 14:00) and closes on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. The English restaurant page adds a fourth place, a scenic restaurant the hotel runs on the 18th floor of the Kagoshima Prefectural Government Building.

Where can I see Sakurajima from inside the hotel?

The hotel names three viewing spots: the 13th-floor bath, the restaurants and the guest rooms. If you booked a single, which faces the city, the bath and the 13th-floor lounge are where you will see the volcano.

Can I change money or buy souvenirs?

The terms list a currency exchange service at the front desk, open 24 hours, without naming currencies or rates, so carry yen for the bathing tax and buses. The shop, Satsuma Shochu Collection Nibankan, opens 7:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 21:00. Some plans on the booking page include early check-in at 12:00 instead of 14:00.

Which phone number should I call from abroad?

The main number is +81-99-253-2020 and reservations are +81-99-253-2024. Dial them by hand: the tap-to-call links on the English site leave out the plus sign, so a phone may not connect from them. The English contact form asks you to send again or call if you have no reply within three days.

Travelers who want Sakurajima outside the window and a hot-spring bath at the top of the building, and who arrive by day or by car. If your train or flight lands in the evening, budget for a city bus or taxi, as the shuttle will not meet you. Pick any room but a single for the volcano view, and read the Japanese pages when the English ones disagree. Before you go, these are the checks:

  1. Arriving after 16:42? Plan the city bus from stop East 15 or a taxi.
  2. Check your plan’s own cancellation rule; meal plans start at three days.
  3. Ask about tattoos if it matters; the pages are silent.
  4. Book on the Japanese booking page or by phone; the English one shows no plans.
  5. Want the view? Avoid the single rooms, which face the city.
