Hakone Airu is a 15-room hot spring inn in Hakone-Yumoto, Kanagawa, built around the theme of Hakone’s clear water and deep blue. Before you book, three things matter: every room has its own open-air bath fed by natural hot spring water; reservations are online only through the official site; and room prices and the cancellation rule live on the booking screen, not on the website itself.

The name joins two traditional Japanese colors, indigo (ai) and lapis blue (ruri), and the inn notes that “air” means water in Indonesian. Inside, even the corridors are laid with tatami, and the rooms and halls use one-of-a-kind furniture and objects bought in Bali. There is also an aquarium bar.

What is in each room?
Every room has an open-air bath and a shower booth, and a terrace with a sofa and a chair with an ottoman. The inn lists free Wi-Fi, a hair dryer, an electric kettle and an air purifier; the 4th-floor rooms add a double sink, a towel warmer and a refrigerator. Drinks in the refrigerator are charged.
The hot spring baths at Hakone Airu
How does the in-room bath work?
Each room’s open-air bath runs on natural hot spring water flowing straight from the source, and the inn says it is big enough for two. For a special night, the inn offers a flower bath from 11,000 yen; book it at least 3 days ahead.
What are the shared baths like?
There are separate men’s and women’s baths with an open-air section, also with source-flowing water. The spring is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate type, alkaline and hypotonic, drawn in at 65°C at the source. After bathing, a free beer or soft drink is served in the open lounge, Shizuka. The official pages list the bath hours in two different ways, so confirm them at check-in.
Can I bathe with a tattoo?
The official pages do not mention tattoos. Your in-room bath is private, but ask the inn about the shared baths before you book. Our tattoo and onsen guide explains what to ask.
Meals at Hakone Airu

Where and what is dinner?
Meals are served in private dining rooms on each floor, divided seat by seat so each party has its own space. Tables for two are a side-by-side counter; larger groups get tatami chairs or a sunken table. The kitchen buys fish caught in Sagami Bay directly at Hayakawa fishing port, and the menu changes with what comes in. Courses shown include local sashimi, Japanese beef steak, grilled king crab, beef shabu-shabu, sushi and, in winter, a special fugu (blowfish) course.
Can I add dishes?
Yes, with at least 3 days’ notice. Prices include tax.
| Extra dish | Price |
|---|---|
| Sirloin steak 100 g / 150 g | 4,290 / 5,060 yen |
| Shabu-shabu 150 g / 200 g | 5,060 / 6,600 yen |
| Local sashimi platter (serves two) | 13,200 yen |
| Grilled abalone, from 100 g | from 4,290 yen |
| Whole cake, size 4 / size 5 | 6,050 / 7,150 yen |
| Bouquet | from 5,500 yen |
From the official facilities page, read October 20, 2026. Spiny lobster sashimi is at market price.
Can the inn handle allergies or a special diet?
Tell the inn about food allergies at least 3 days before your stay. An extra charge may apply, and if the allergy is severe the inn may decline for safety. Vegetarian, halal and breakfast details are not on the official pages; ask before you book.
Booking, children, cancellation and payment at Hakone Airu
How do I book?
The inn asks guests to book online through its official site. On the English site, the “Plans” button opens the booking screen, where you will find the current plans and prices; the website itself does not list room rates.
What do children cost?
The official pages do not give child rates or age rules, so check the plan or ask the inn. Hakone’s bathing tax of 150 yen per guest per night does not apply to children under 12, according to Hakone Town; see our onsen bathing tax guide. Whether the tax is included in the room price is not stated.
What is the cancellation policy?
The inn sets its cancellation policy separately for each booking site, so the rule that applies is the one shown where you reserve. For changes of plan for personal reasons the standard policy applies, and the inn recommends travel cancellation insurance. Our hotel cancellation guide explains how these fees work in Japan.
How do I pay?
Payment methods depend on how you book. Check the payment terms on the booking screen, or ask the inn through its contact form.
Getting to Hakone Airu from Hakone-Yumoto Station

The inn is within walking distance of Hakone-Yumoto Station, and the English site gives about 2 minutes by taxi. The shared ryokan bus, Course B (Soun-dori line), takes about 3 minutes and costs 100 yen per person, paid in advance; elementary school children and younger ride free. It is not the inn’s own shuttle, and the inn asks you to check its hours with Hakone Tozan Bus. By car, the inn gives the route via the Odawara-Atsugi Road and Odawara-nishi IC, then Route 1; parking details are not on the official pages. For the rest of the town, see our Hakone guide.
