Takayama Green Hotel is the big onsen hotel of Hida Takayama: 238 rooms in several wings, a six-minute walk from the west exit of JR Takayama Station, with two bathhouses fed by its own weakly alkaline spring and a free shuttle to the station. It is a Keio Group hotel, and its rules are published in an unusually complete English FAQ. The ones that trip people up: check-in and checkout times differ by wing, tattoos are admitted only when covered, children are priced in four bands that depend on the plan, and the cancellation fee starts three days before arrival.

What is Takayama Green Hotel, and which wing should I book?
A resort-scale hotel on the west side of the station, across the river from the old town, with 238 rooms in Western, Japanese and Japanese-Western styles, some with a private open-air bath, spread over the Main Building (Honkan), Tenryokaku, the Premium Floors and Orinkaku. It sells itself on three things: a garden onsen, Hida beef in the restaurants, and the fact that Shirakawa-go is a 50-minute drive. The wings matter, because they set your hours.
Which wing has the best check-in and checkout times?
The Premium Floors and Orinkaku: check-in 14:00, checkout 11:00. Tenryokaku is 15:00 in and 11:00 out. The Main Building has the earliest checkout, 10:00, with check-in at 15:00. If you plan a slow morning in the bath, that hour is worth checking before you pick the cheapest room.
What is in a Japanese-Western room?
Twin beds plus a tatami section. For four people the hotel puts two in the beds and two on futon laid on the tatami, and it says plainly that staff will enter the room in the evening to lay the futon even if you are out, so valuables go in the in-room safe. Yukata rental is available for a small fee. Rooms with an open-air bath exist in several wings, but see the bath section: that water is not from the spring.
Can I ask for a view or two rooms together?
You can request a view; the hotel says it cannot guarantee one. Two rooms near each other can be arranged only if they are the same room type. Non-smoking rooms are chosen at booking; if none is left, ask for ozone deodorizing of a smoking room.
Check-in, checkout and the station shuttle
How do I get from Takayama Station?
Leave by the west exit, walk straight to the second traffic light, turn left and follow the street to its end: about six minutes. Or wait at the same exit for the hotel’s free shuttle, a white bus with green lettering that runs on a fixed timetable published as a PDF on the access page, no booking needed; the hotel warns the timetable can change without notice. Can the hotel store or forward my luggage?
Yes on both counts. The front desk keeps bags before check-in and after checkout. To send a suitcase ahead, it must be prepaid, not cash on delivery, with your booking name and check-in date written on the slip; the hotel asks to be told when it will arrive. Will the hotel book my train or bus?
No. The FAQ says it cannot book JR or bus tickets and does not offer concierge services. Buy the Takayama-Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go buses yourself at the Nohi bus center by the station; our Kanazawa map has the other end of that route.

What changes for a group of eight or more?
The scale starts two months out: 10 percent at 60 days, 20 percent at 30 days, 30 percent at 14 days, 50 percent at 7 days, and 100 percent from the day before, including the day itself and no-shows. The hotel adds that it may ask groups to pay a deposit in advance.
How do I change a booking?
Add a person or move the date yourself on the site you booked through; if that is not possible, contact that site’s customer service or the hotel by email. Cancellations follow the same route.

Do children eat the same buffet?
Yes. The FAQ says the buffet for a child is exactly the same as for adults; the age bands decide only what you pay and whether bedding is laid. Choose Child A or B at booking if you want a meal included.
Is there a baby bed?
A rental crib for children under one year costs 3,300 yen per night and must be booked; supply is limited, so ask early. Infants in diapers may not enter the onsen, and there is a baby chair for the bath in the changing rooms.
The onsen: two bathhouses, a bath tax and the tattoo rule
When can guests bathe, and what does it cost?
Guests use the baths without booking from 15:00 to 1:00 and again 5:00 to 10:00, as often as they like. The hotel collects a bath tax of 150 yen per night from every guest over 12, so two adults for two nights pay 600 yen at checkout. The spring is called Tenryo no Yu, pH 8.1 and weakly alkaline, the kind marketed in Japan as a skin-softening “beauty” water; our onsen law guide explains what those labels legally mean.
What are the two bathhouses?
Honjin Daiyokuden, on the first floor of Tenryokaku, has an indoor bath facing a Japanese garden, two garden open-air baths (a cypress tub that becomes a jet bath at the push of a button, and a rock bath lit at night) and a sauna, the sauna open 15:00 to 23:00. Tenryo no Yu “Fuga”, in the basement of the main building, reopened in February 2023 with an indoor bath and two open-air baths, one of them carbonated. Both are single-sex; there is no mixed bathing and no private bath.
Are tattoos allowed?
Only if covered. The FAQ says yes if you can cover the tattoo with stickers or another method; the bath rules say guests who cannot hide their tattoos cannot use the onsen and those who can are allowed. The etiquette board in the changing room simply says no tattoos, so treat the sticker as mandatory, not optional. Bring your own; nothing on the site says the hotel sells them. Is the bath in my room an onsen?
No. The FAQ is explicit: none of the in-room baths are hot-spring water, including the rooms with an open-air bath. If a private onsen is the point of your trip, this is the wrong hotel; if a private tub with a view is enough, the open-air rooms deliver that.
What are the other bath rules?
No swimsuits. Children aged 7 and over use the bath for their own sex. No infants in diapers. No photography. Shower before entering, tie up long hair, keep the towel out of the water and dry off before the changing room.
Can I bathe without staying?
Yes. Day-use runs 11:00 to 14:00 (last entry 13:00) and 15:00 to 22:00 (last entry 21:00) every day except a handful of blackout periods: around April 14 to 15, Golden Week in late April to early May, mid-August, October 9 to 10 (the autumn festival) and the New Year period. The fee is 1,500 yen over age 12, 750 yen for ages 6 to 11, 300 yen for ages 3 to 5, washcloth included, from the ticket machine beside the front desk. Which bathhouse you get depends on the day: in the daytime Honjin on Friday to Sunday and Fuga on Monday to Thursday; in the evening always Honjin.
Meals: restaurants only, and tell them a week ahead
Is there room service?
No. The hotel does not serve meals in guest rooms; it says so in the FAQ and points you to its restaurants: the Japanese dining room Ryokutei, the buffet and French room Green Court, the Chinese restaurant Tenkyoro, the izakaya Shirakawago, the lounge Kinoka and a patisserie. Ryokutei, Green Court and Tenkyoro serve dinner 17:00 to 21:30 with last entry 20:30; Shirakawago runs to 23:00 with last order 22:30. Breakfast is 7:00 to 9:30.
What is the “order buffet”?
A 90-minute all-you-can-eat format that combines a standard buffet of about 70 dishes (sushi, pizza, dessert, soft drinks) with about 30 cooked-to-order dishes such as Hida beef skewers and diced steak, brought to your table. Dishes change with the season. A separate Wakuwaku buffet in the banquet hall runs on limited days for hotel guests only.
I am vegetarian, or I do not eat beef. What do I do?
Tell the hotel one week before arrival; that is the FAQ’s deadline for any dietary restriction. The same week applies to choosing different dinners on two nights (keep the same room type, or you will be asked to move), and to ordering a birthday cake, which comes with free number candles and a message plate. Adding dinner to a breakfast-only booking is possible on the day if there is space, but the hotel recommends booking it.
Payment, parking, laundry and the small print
What cards and e-money does the hotel take?
The printed list is Visa, JCB, American Express, UC, MUFG, UnionPay, DC, Nicos, Diners, Cedyna, Saison, UCS and TS3, plus Alipay, WeChat Pay and PayPay. Mastercard is not on the list; we cannot tell you whether that is an omission, so carry a second card or cash.
How much is parking?
1,000 yen per night for a car and 500 yen for a motorcycle, tax included, in a lot for 250 vehicles with no reservation. Nights add up: two nights is 2,000 yen.
Is there a laundry and a gym?
Both. Coin laundry in the basement of the main building, 24 hours, guests only: 500 yen for 80 minutes (1 kg wash and dry) or 600 yen for 120 minutes (3 kg). A laundry service for guests staying consecutive nights closes on Sundays. The gym is free for guests, 7:00 to 22:00, with a form to sign at the front desk and no rental clothes or shoes.
Can I rent a bicycle?
Yes, without booking, from 8:00 until sunset: 500 yen for two hours or 1,000 yen for the day, one size only (20-inch wheels, adjustable saddle), closed in winter. The old town, Miyagawa morning market and Hida no Sato are all within easy riding distance.
Is the hotel wheelchair accessible?
Some rooms and restaurants are; Orinkaku lists a universal-design twin. A wheelchair can be borrowed for use inside the hotel only. Ask about availability of the universal rooms before booking.
Who Takayama Green Hotel is for
Families and groups who want a big garden onsen, Hida beef and a station shuttle without ryokan formality, and drivers heading on to Shirakawa-go. It is the wrong choice if you need a private onsen bath (there is none, and room tubs are plain water) or if your tattoo cannot be covered.
