FAQ
How much does a trip to Japan cost?
It depends on your hotels, food and trains. Add yours above. For example, 7 nights for two people in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with a ¥15,000 room comes to the total shown when the page opens. Change any number to fit your trip.
Is the departure tax included in my flight?
Usually yes. Airlines collect the ¥3,000 International Tourist Tax with the ticket. When you enter a flight price, the calculator treats the tax as included and does not add it again. With no flight price, it adds the tax.
Do children pay the hotel tax?
It depends on the place. Many places exempt only school trips, so children usually pay. Some places, such as Atami and Gifu, exempt children of elementary school age or younger.
Is the hotel tax included in the room price I see online?
Often not. Many hotels collect it at check-in. Check the booking details.
Should I enter the room price with or without tax?
Either. Japan's accommodation tax uses the price per person per night before consumption tax and without meals. If your price includes the 10% tax, as on most booking sites, keep the box ticked and the calculator works out the before-tax price. If your price is before tax, untick it and 10% is added to your hotel cost.
Does Tokyo's hotel tax change?
Yes. From April 1, 2027, rooms of ¥13,000 or more per person per night pay 3%. This calculator uses the rate in force now.
