      How Japanese shoe sizes work

      • Japan's shoe standard (JIS S 5037) sizes shoes by foot length: from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe, in centimeters, in 0.5 cm steps.
      • The width code (A, B, C, D, E, EE, EEE, EEEE, F, G) comes from the girth around the ball of the foot for each length. Men's go from A to G, women's from A to F, children's from B to G.
      • There is no official table that turns US, UK or EU shoe sizes into Japanese sizes. Even ISO calls such conversions a guideline, and sites disagree by up to about 2 cm. Measuring your foot is the reliable way.

What is US 9 in Japanese shoe size?

It is the width code. Wider codes mean a larger girth around the ball of the foot for the same length.

      Do Japanese clothes run small?

Sizes follow body measurements in Japan's standard, so compare your measurements rather than the letter you wear at home. Brands cut differently, so try them on.
